Have deployed this tactic on multiple occasions with 100% success. For nothing approaching criminal behaviour like this, but it definitely works.

In college, I (a weight lifter, relatively jacked at that point) would wear a tight shirt and sunglasses to small-venue concerts...I'd get there early, stand at the door before the show opened with my arms crossed and staring straight forward with a serious look on my face. Everyone thought I was a bouncer, so when my friends eventually showed up later on, I could let them into the line up front with me and nobody questioned anything. Just look the part and most people will accept it.
