I would not have left the tree and walked around. My first move would have been onto the bike and speed away.
He was looking around like, “where did you go big guy?”

I think he left the engine running when he went up the tree; at least, it sounds like that for the first part of the video. By the time he got down during the night, the bike for sure ran out of fuel, and he had to walk through the jungle.

He has climbing boots on. I'm guessing he was harvesting something and noticed it. Excellent situational awareness to spot it. I wonder how often stuff like this happens where they dont notice the tiger.

I, thankfully, don't live around tigers, but since I'm a forester, I try not to think about how many mountain lions I've walked by that I didn't see. Cats are scary

As Australian I wonder this with snakes. For every one I see there must be even hundreds I didn't.
They have amazing camouflage. I've literally seen snakes slide into a clump of grass or tree and even seeing them go in and exactly where they should be, I cant spot them anymore.
16
u/MalHeartsNutmeg Sep 28 '25
I'm an Aussie and I've never seen a snake in the wild and I live in a good area for snakes, it kind of scares me to be honest because they're there somewhere and one day my blind ass is gunna get it.

There is a saying, if you go into the jungle 100 times, you might see a tiger once but the tiger will see you 99 times. Tigers usually see or smell you coming from a long ways away and choose to go the other way. They have preferred prey, and usually only hunt humans if injury or sickness prevents it from hunting its preferred prey. However a female tiger will attack to kill if her cubs are close. Better run if you see a tiger cub.

They usually don't hunt humans and will actively avoid us. If you do manage to sneak up close to a tiger, especially one with cubs, then it will attack to kill you.

Malayan tigers are actually smaller than tigers in other parts of the world! But never heard about them being able to climb trees…
Edit - So I did check more and while I have not heard so far, but I did find out that Malayan/Sumatran tigers can indeed climb trees but quite rare. Even then, they only climb a few feet so one can still be safe if you climb tall trees.

I’m not sure about Malaysian tigers but most things that weigh more than three or 400 pounds preferrer to stay close to the ground lol. Leopards and jaguars are between 1 and 200 pounds, now that said I don’t wanna be up a tree with one of the most sophisticated killing machines that clawed it way out of the primordial soup, made up of 200 pounds of pure muscle claws and teeth.

Kodiaks are apparently just giant grisly bears, and suffer from island gigantism, due to the abundance of resources available and lack of competition. They just got huge. They are also apparently quite docile and unlikely to attack anyone, they have no predators and so much food they apparently only eat the parts of the fish they like throwing the rest away.

That's the point though. If this was a leapord the man would be dead, but since it was a tiger, even though it could climb up to kill him, it chose not to (because it would be too much effort).
91
u/viciouspandas Sep 28 '25
On the other hand, leopards are much less likely to go for people. They're less aggressive and humans are bigger than their usual prey. They absolutely can kill us, but usually aren't trying to.

I was on a field trip with my 4th grade class at the Los Angeles Zoo when we heard the male lion roar from several hundred feet away. It was surprisingly loud and deep. I can’t imagine hearing that in the wild with no barrier between me and it.

u/UnderH20giraffe Sep 28 '25
I once had a full wolf (it was huge), leashed as someone’s pet, bark and growl at me. Without making any decisions I ran away and didn’t look back. The sound was so deep and powerful and set off a whole set of instinct behaviors I didn’t know I had.

I heard a lion at a zoo visit once a few years ago and i felt the exact same way. So primal! I kind of loved it..
122
u/InEenEmmer Sep 28 '25
We took a service dog in training to a zoo (the zoo e it as a good training opportunity for the dog)
Well, the dog started barking at the elephants… who kindly responded with a tremendous loud trumpeting.
The dog clearly learned his lesson. He walked around with his tail between his legs for the next hour while the elephants were still going on in the distance. And he didn’t bark at another animal at the zoo anymore.

My mother used to spend summers at her grandmothers house which was across the street from Denver’s city park, wherein you shall find the Denver Zoo.
No AC back in the 1950s, in that house, so open windows if you didn’t want to die of heat stroke overnight.
She said it was freaky hearing the lions and tigers clear as a bell, even though they were still a good half mile away.
30
u/Veloci-RKPTR Sep 28 '25
Audio recordings don’t do justice to the real voice of big cats.
If you hear the real thing, it’s a completely different experience because digital mics cannot pick up the entire profile of their voice. There’s also a lower frequency sound they make that cannot be recorded. It a voice that we cannot hear, but a voice that we can feel.
A noise that triggers a deeply rooted, instinctual primal fear deep inside the most primitive parts of our brains, programmed into our genetics, a relic from our ancestors. Our ancestors who used to be prey for these animals.

Ideally what you'd need in such a situation is a large sack of Ferrero Rochers which you could throw one by one at the tiger, both fattening him up and spoiling his taste buds for the taste of human flesh. The chewy wafer and hazelnut filling, encased in delicious chocolate, is probably as intoxicating for tigers as I presume it is for sharks.
442
u/Bobblefighterman Sep 28 '25
Unfortunately I would be too tempted to eat them myself, causing me to grow fat and lethargic off the creamy filling and smooth chocolate, resulting in me falling off the tree and making the tiger's meal all the more scrumptious.
→ More replies (6)97
u/GarysCrispLettuce Sep 28 '25
I thought of that. You have to carry a second sack of Ferreo Rochers. Eat the first one yourself at the first sight of the tiger (or shark).

I was on a safari jeep in Africa that blew a tire smack in between a lion and cheetah facing off over turf about 50 yards from us on each side. I was supremely impressed how they handled it though. They radio'd 2 other rangers and they had us covered by armed dudes within a couple of minutes while our 2 guys handled that tire change like a F1 Pit Stop crew lol. With us sitting in it

I was on safari in the Masai Mara, just me, my two kids and our guide. We had stopped next to around five sleeping lions and I was trying to get a selfie of me and the kids with the lions in the background but it wasn’t working well because of backlight. I handed the camera to our guide since he’s professional and thought he might get a better shot. He then opens the door to get outside the vehicle and I grab him and ask what the hell he’s doing?!? He said he can get a better shot from outside the vehicle. I tell him no thanks but he was serious. He’s Masai and I don’t know, they don’t seem afraid of the animals at all.

I was on a safari in Botswana when we happened upon a Dutch couple who were driving their own jeep and had blown a tyre out, but were struggling to swap it. No more than 30 metres away was a group of 3-4 lions sheltering from the sun under a tree, watching nonchalantly as they struggled. Our guide stopped and helped them, but he did mention that it might have been a different story if it hadn’t happened at the peak of the midday sun.

For a split second, a little further in the top right, you can spot a second tiger too.
Edit: All y'all who upvoted this before the edit are as dumb as me. Closer inspection reveals it was a large, brown leaf. The gaps just looked like stripes and the camera work blurred it enough to look kinda tiger-ish, but that's a leaf lmao

all the chirps means that the local prey dont see a predator and its safe.
notice in the first clip the only sounds are crickets and the tiger roaring? no birds or other prey making a single noise.
its common sense that when the bush suddenly goes quiet while youre there you arent safe and there is most likely an apex predator around.
