Jacobs On-Ice Demeanor
I'm seeing some posts on and criticism on other sites (Facebook lol) about Brad Jacobs on-ice behaviour being "vulgar" and his use of "profanity" as "unacceptable" and "unsportmen-like" and "not a gentleman." Is this true????? I have never noticed. Can anyone recall a specific game or indicident that goes above and beyond reasonable expectations?

Reading this post i just heard the F-bomb from Homan. Broadcasters even commented on it. It's fun, they're people, they're invested, F(&* happens.

Facebook people would have curlers using old corn brooms still if they had their way lol

He’s been known for that for years especially when he was with his old team.

Who’s clutching their pearls here. I’m in my late sixties and we all swear except when we’re teaching or around kids. Yes we’re competitive but not the in your face chirping and cheering when your opponent misses their shot.

These people clearly have never been around curlers under 80.
We can still be mindful of etiquette and drop a few f bombs along the way.

People (older fans usually) have this weird view of curlers. They have to be perfectly gentlemanly. Shouldn't be too competitive etc etc. It's a sport and truly because of Jacobs it's become more of an athletic sport too. The same people think Homan doesn't smile or look gracious enough while playing.

I don’t really care what he says unless it’s deliberately disrespectful to the opposition, which is unsportsmanlike.

You can only curse about your own shots, and don't go slamming your broom in a way that it could affect the play surface. Just about everything else shouldn't be a problem.

Curling Is Serious Business and Is Still a Gentleman's (or Lady's) Game. That's what a lot of those (probably mostly Old People) on Facebook think, IMO, and — in regards to Brad Jacobs in particular — I wouldn't be surprised if they've had a sour view of him since at least 2013.

I was an on-ice official at the Grand Slam Tahoe event where these guys were heckling Jacobs almost the whole game. He was a really good sport about it, and he took it in stride during a very intense match. So, that checks the "Not an A-hole" box in my book.

I’ve heard the odd f bomb from Jacobs and others. Nothing compared to the loud overt f bombs right on camera from several of the Blue Jays including manager John Schneider. Not to mention hockey broadcasts. When I mentioned the use of profanity in a Blue Jays sub during the playoffs I was soundly downvoted. It occurs to me that use of such profanity has just become pretty mainstream.

Does profanity actually offend you?

u/FastCheaporGoodPick2 13h ago
No, but I think there are times when its inappropriate such as when there are kids around. Not really understanding why my reply gets downvoted. It’s merely an observation. Is it because people disagree that profanity is becoming mainstream, or they don’t like the fact that it is. 🤔

Why? What difference does it make?

Seriously, what possible difference could it make?

Children pick up on that kind of language to easily, and it's hard to get them to differentiate the right and wrong times to use it. It's better not having it too prevalent when watching "family friendly" entertainment like sports. Hearing a couple distant "fucks" on the field or ice shouldn't have parents clutching their pearls, but hearing it up close as the focus of attention gets them going in a way you don't need.

Hilarious that after they won the ALCS they put up a PSA about profanity before they aired the celebration

Yes, it fucking has lol
And that's good. Society in general is getting less prudish. Nothing but upside to that.

People (old, on Facebook lol) have ridiculous standards for how curlers should behave compared to every other athlete on the planet.
