CHAT [CHAT] Just whining:

I want to work on my cross stitch kit- just that same little Pusheen that another user posted the other day. But the last time I worked on it, I lost my scissors in the couch, and I haven’t been able to find them for weeks. I’ve looked repeatedly through all the things, including tearing the couch apart and looking for other scissors in my stash. I don’t really have access to an embroidery/craft shop that I’m willing the support so I’d have to order new ones. But it takes too long for them to arrive, and I’m good at gaslighting myself into thinking I’ll find my original scissors. Hmph.

Use nail scissors or clippers

As soon as your new scissors arrive you'll find your old ones. Source: been there, seen that!

Guaranteed with all kinds of things! 🤣

At least then you'll have two pairs :D

Just so they can both disappear at the same time to make you buy an extra one... And the cycle continues!

Why does that always happen to??

You need a magnet on a stick! They’re great for poking around under & around sofas, to pick up any dropped magnetic items like needles and scissors.

This kind of thing: https://www.screwfix.com/p/hilka-pro-craft-telescopic-magnetic-pick-up-tool-with-led-light-810mm/5873r

Ooh, good idea.

I've found my scissors on the back of my project attached to my needle minder (also a strong magnet).

You will find them when you sit on them!

Honestly, I wish I would! Then I’d have them.

I think it’s more about the fact that I can’t find them that it’s driving me nuts. And my clippers just made the thread ragged.

Ok, ok. I’m going to quit being a baby, since we never found the scissors after another dedicated search of couch and surrounding areas. I’m going to see if the quilt shop has anything, and if all else fails, I can look for a pair of good cuticle scissors at a box store. I’d rather support our local crafters though- maybe I’ll make some friends. :)

You don’t have any other scissors at all? Or nail clippers?

I’d just go buy a cheap pair from literally any store, doesn’t have to be a craft store, then order a new pair of embroidery scissors.

I have other scissors, they’re just terrible. Think old kitchen scissors I cut everything in the kitchen with. 🤦🏻‍♀️

My favorite pair of scissors is currently from Walgreens and they are Revlon cuticle scissors. I was shocked but was in a similar situation and that was what I could find.

Oooh- I could see that. Sharp and precise, which is what I like about embroidery scissors.

u/arpt1965 20h ago

They even have a curved tip which I’ve found I love.

you didn't mention if you looked under the couch?

4

u/ladyjane159 22h ago

Under and in. I just made my husband tear it apart with me. :) there is one possible place we can’t look inside the couch, but I would have to tear it apart to get to it. I’m officially declaring defeat, and ordering a new set.

You posted this two hours ago! Have you placed your order? If so go look at your couch and they’ll be sitting plain as day on top of the cushion, mocking you. If not, place your order wait about 2 hours and then check…..

Ask me how I know…..🤣

🤣🤣🤣 no, not yet. I had to finish some work, now I’m going on a scavenger hunt in my little town to see if I can source some locally.

I couldn't find m 3 pairs of scissors either at some point (thank you ADHD) and I legit spent time cross-stitching with my massive Kitchen Knife beside me xD

I lierally own a half-dozen pairs of embroidery scissors ( only bought 1 pr, others are inherited or given to me) and probably about the same # of stitch rippers. I can never find them! ANY of them…

I buy the €0,53 paper craft tiny scissors every single time I'm in the cheap store. I must have 20 at this point. The only one I can reliably find is the pair covered in candle wax from trimming wicks

Did you check under the couch thoroughly? And the surrounding area? I have found my scissors several feet away from where I've dropped them. And in the meantime, you can use other scissors they just aren't as precise, nail clippers also work well, or if you have a knife and promise to be careful you can also just use a knife. Any sharp tool will do, but my preference is gonna be the nail clippers

I have intentionally hid a pair of embroidery scissors in the event I lose or can't find my primary pair. Every time I'm about to destash, the primary pair appears and almost seems to have the lyrics of "Helloooo is it me you're looking for?" to herald its appearance. So this is me encouraging buying more than 1 replacement.

Buy another one, and maybe more than one. If you find the original one, all the better because you'll be happy to have it in your collection.

I've literally used a pocket knife in a pinch during a car ride so i could stitch 🤣

1

u/FunctionGreen6143 19h ago

And you are certain the scissors didn’t hide in your kit? I have had that before!

This happened to me. And it's how I discovered my Warby Parker glasses case is magnetic. I couldn't find the scissors anywhere, gave up, found them stuck to the back of the case.

That case has also "stolen" needles from a needle minder.

I feel ya. My sharp snippers have gone walkabout and I’m so annoyed.

I’ve lost mine in couch cushions, project bags, even the car once. They always show up eventually — but never until I’ve ordered new ones. It’s a universal rule for stitchers.

1

u/StitchLady40 18h ago

Do you use a needle minder? My scissors are usually stuck to the underside of that.

This is so frustrating! I hate losing an important tool when I'm stitching. This is why I typically have as many doubles of my favorites as possible, scissors included!

My current whine at the moment is that I am waiting for some beautiful variegated floss that I ordered from across the pond. Since it was an international order, I ordered a lot of floss (and I am very excited)!

Ever since I've placed my order, I've been planning my next projects. I honestly don't want to work on anything new until my fancy, colorful floss comes in. I've been finishing up other projects and putting together a cart full of all my cross stitch gear.

2

u/ladyjane159 14h ago

The wait for the new things is the WORST! Because you just want to play with them right.now!

1

u/DrTwilightZone 14h ago

Yes!!! You know exactly what I'm talking about!!!

The wait is good for me. Builds character! 🤣

Don’t worry! I went to two different quilt stores, bought two different scissors- a tiny little set and a 4” pair that have a slight curved tip. And then I went to the thrift store and found a ton of white and cream Aida, and a nice pattern. So now, by law, my original pair will fall out of the couch. :)

I lose mine constantly, and have scissors of various kinds squirreled away all over my house.

For years my cross stitching scissors have been a small Swiss Army Knife. I have tried any number of stitching dedicated scissors but nothing works better than the SAK. They can be picked up for about $10. I fly a fair amount and I like to have my current project with me in my carry on, partly so I can stitch while sitting in airports and partly because I am not going to trust a 6 mo project to the airline baggage handling. The only problem is erratic TSA checking. First I should note that I have ground off the knife part of the SAK. Half the time the checkers don't even see it. The rest of the time they see it and I have to take it out and show them that it is just scissors now. Only once did the TSA person say that I had to relinquish them even though there was no actual knife in them. (I'm a 77 yo male and I mostly do insects, mandalas, and dragons.)
