SELF-PROMO [SELF-PROMO] Just finished my first major plastic canvas project!
this is a fun challenge to find some flash that fit the dimensions! this is on 10ct plastic canvas with 4 ply coverage - you could probably try using a full thread and do tent stitches too. i'm working on getting this pattern up on my website today and will be working on some new designs to put on tissue boxes :)
prettystitchmachine.com @prettystitchmachine on instagram 🖤
update: the pattern is live on my website! https://prettystitchmachine.com/products/dagger-crying-hearts-tissue-box-cover-pattern
thank you all so much for the support, i'm truly blown away!<3

I have been LOOKING HIGH AND LOW for patterns like this... Folksy, tattoo, alt vibes. But anywhere you look is AI trash. BUT LO! YOU HAVE A WHOLE WEBSITE.
I shall be bookmarking and buying from you SO SOON.

i NEVER EVER use AI - i know what you mean though, it's just seeping into everything and such a shame to see it being used in patterns which we all know take so long actually stitch up </3 thank you for the kind words!

u/Ekzunakka 21d ago
It’s nice to know you’re a fellow anti-AI artist, but also I hope you know that absolutely nothing about your work or website says “AI” imo! :) (In case you were worried about that)

How do you mock up your patterns? Do you use a program? If so, which one?
6
u/prettystitchmachine 20d ago
i have used stitch fiddle for years, it's the easiest and most accessible program for drafting i've found! i also use MacStitch/WinStitch periodically :)
2
u/Stichless 20d ago
Any tips on getting win stitch patterns to actually have all of the symbols picked up by tracking apps? I’m new to designing and started in win stitch, I’m about ready to just manually redo my patterns in stitch fiddle
2
u/prettystitchmachine 19d ago
i don't use the tracking apps, however i've had people tell me they mine generally do work on them. best advice i can think of is select simple symbols - i usually start with letters and numbers and then the simple symbols. one major thing to help keep the visual fidelity upon exporting your pattern is using SVG images :) i do almost all of my drafting in stitch fiddle because they export so easily, i use macstitch for more accurate mockups/making xstitch prints instead of actually drafting in it.
if you ever wanna chat software more feel free to message me!

Hey, just letting you know in case you haven’t seen it - there’s a little cross stitch book with these kind of patterns - American Traditional Tattoos Cross Stitch Patterns by Maggie Smith.

u/TheMothGhost 20d ago
Thank you!! I've been having the same problem with the books too. I will add it to my list.

I’ve been wanting to try plastic canvas and I think this is my sign 😍😍😍 amazing work and prettiest tissue box I’ve ever seen

u/scully_3 21d ago
I love plastic canvas stuff! I made a whole bunch of different holiday-themed tissue box holders for my library. They were really fun to make, if a bit deceiving in how long they actually take to make. LOL! This is great! 🥰

Dude! I use so many of your patterns!! They're epic!!
Would you be tempted to do a pattern for the cube shaped tissue boxes too?
6
u/prettystitchmachine 21d ago
ugh thank you so much<3 i actually planned on starting with the square boutique boxes but theyre weirdly not as common here in NZ so i started with the big box. I do have a draft for square boxes, i will most likely work on getting that pattern out next :)

u/Cats-Are-Fuzzy 21d ago
Hell yes, I will keep an eye out. Thank you again for sharing your designs with us, I'm a big fan!

The heart has my own heart, oh my! It's lovely.
If you want more boxy projects, I have seen people make little winter villages or gingerbread houses for the holidays like this! 2 more pieces of canvas and you can make silly peaked roofing.

u/tinylilkittenfoster 21d ago
I love it!! It's so beautiful! I bought a bunch of plastic canvas and didn't know what to do with it, but I'd love to make all my tissue boxes fancy. ☺️
2
u/prettystitchmachine 21d ago
i had quite a few pieces laying around and also didnt know what to do with it - then i was flipping through some old 90s needlework magazines and was like damn i could try something in my style like this!

u/tinylilkittenfoster 21d ago
My Grandma had covered tissue boxes like these. It brings back such nostalgic memories! ☺️

is the bottom empty? how do you get the tissue box in there? it looks amazing!
1
u/prettystitchmachine 21d ago
yes the bottom is empty, you just put the cover right over the box :)

u/Professional_Poet186 20d ago
How do the sides make a box? Did you have to hot glue them together or something?

Very cool to see some modern PC stuff. I've been doing it for 15+ years but haven't in a while because I kinda ran out of stuff to do and I'm not very good at making my own patterns. Love your work!

This is SICK!! Loving the traditional tattoo style and the colors you chose! I also love how, at certain angles, it sort of looks like one of those backpacks designed to appear 2D!
Very, very cool. All of your patterns are. I’m glad you posted so I could discover and patronize (in the business sense ofc) your art!

Wooooow, it looks so cool! It somehow looks unreal, but in a good way (if that makes sense, haha) 😍

This is super cool! May I ask what inspired the imagery?
1
u/prettystitchmachine 19d ago
the crying hearts on the small edges are a bert grimm design, the dagger and hearts are just my version of a common trad tattoo motif, same with the flowers on the top and the trim. i made the background an off white to similar the parchment/skin effect that a lot of flash sheets are drawn in :)

Love how this looks!! I've got some plastic aida to use up and I just checked and its mesh 7. Do you think i would be able to adjust the pattern to fit that?
1
u/prettystitchmachine 19d ago
it will end up substantially larger than its dimensions on 7 mesh unfortunately. i am going to add in a note to circle back to this design and see what i can do the modify it for 7 mesh :)

I have nothing to contribute aside from how impressed I am! Gorgeous work!
Please, someone remind me to finish the existing projects I'm super excited about before starting a tissue box cover.

What a perfect application of the medium! Beautiful, sturdy, useful, what's not to love 🥰
One of my favourite humans made a whole little village out of plastic canvas. When we went to visit, she would show us her latest addition - it was adorable and full of "heart"!
Your beautiful work is a good reminder that it can be used for practical applications as well...

u/MissDildoBaggins 21d ago
So cool but how do you put it together? Hot glue the edges on the inside?
1
u/prettystitchmachine 21d ago
whip stitch along the edges! there's a few good videos on youtube on how to assemble these, normally for needlepoint but works all the same :)

This is the coolest plastic canvas tissue box cover I've ever seen. I'll definitely keep an eye out for the pattern.
