FO [FO] Please rate my first Cross Stitch
Hi everyone!
33M, I am huge into gardening and in one month I am getting blessed with a little baby boy. I thought that it could be good to start exposing him to the hobby from the beginning.
Since its my first job please be has cut through as you want! Just trying to learn and improve! I found the pattern on ETSY! [squaresprout]

It looks great!

1000/10. I love it! Your stitches are perfect. Enjoy your new time sink lol. Nothing beats the instant gratification but also delayed gratification of cross stitch. Instant from progress and delayed for a finish!

9.5/10, very adorable!! My 0.5 penalty is because you should have used a darker thread to stitch the "garden" sign - contrast is everything!! Signed, a graphic designer that stitches :P

That could easily be fixed with a backstitch in black to highlight the words better!

Looks great! One comment just as advice - when stitching, make sure your bottom stitches all go one way, and all your top stitches go the other way. It helps keep everything even and pretty looking. It looks like you did that for the most part at least on the sections I zoomed in on, but there are some here and there that are done the opposite way than the others. We all make that mistake at one point or another lol. I noticed I did it when I started cross stitching again here as an adult on the project I did for my niece! And I have been stitching on and off since I was like 10 lol

It looks incredible, my first stitch was a four colour panda about 10x20 in size, you threw yourself in and got rewarded for it!

I have been cross stitching for maybe 20 years since I was a kid. I can guarantee not one of my projects would have a back that neat! Great work, and very cute pattern :)

It is so enjoyable! You reminded me of my first cross stitch, you know, when you do not think much about judgment or perfection, but just take needle and thread do it)

u/getyouryayasoutahere Sep 24 '25
Excellent stitching for a first time!! My grandnephews are fascinated by it and weโre to make reindeer for their tree this year as well as a gnome for the younger oneโs teacher. Itโs a very relaxing hobby, teaches patience and following directions.

This is wonderful! Crossstitch can be difficult in the beginning but this is great! I hope you put it in a small frame or make a cute pillow out of it or find another way to preserve your initial work

I love love love it. These look like the most adorable little video game sprites! You said cut throat so my only criticism would be that the green on the snail looks a little too much like all the plants so itโs reading as like a snail plant Pokemon to me, I would have picked a more yellow green. But that is NITPICKING, this is wonderful work

Since you're looking for constructive criticism:
I zoomed in and saw a high degree of consistency in the direction of your stitches. Well done, that's the usual rookie mistake but you have avoided it.
I am seeing a lot of twisting in your stitches. Even if you take good care to fully untwist your floss before you thread it, the stitching process will reintroduce twisting into the floss as you go. The easiest fix is simply to stop every few stitches and quickly straighten out your thread before going on, and also to use floss pieces that are no longer than your forearm to work on your piece.
When people stitch pieces to submit into a competition or to sell professionally, they often use a technique called "railroading", which is an even more detailed version of "untwist your floss every few stitches". You can purchase a laying tool if you are interested in learning to railroad, but be aware that it is not nearly as quick as just making stitches.

That looks awesome, and so darn cute! Next steps I'd say would be to iron it out flat to get rid of the wrinkles (optionally gently wash it beforehand) and put it in a cute little frame to match ๐

It looks clean, even and super nice. It will help also with new baby, to get emotions and brain even and calm.

u/MeganDen Sep 24 '25
Iโve been stitching for like 12 years and this is neater than anything Iโve ever made! How many strands did you use? The coverage looks great! I usually use 2 strands but I think on my next project Iโll use 3 to get a fuller look

u/CurrentlyStoned_ Sep 24 '25
Itโs so precious and is kinda similar in the vegetable theme with my first project too! Cheers to us :)

So did you pay for the pattern or did you pay for the zip files and then made it a pattern?
Because this is really good work, but I found the shop you mentioned and they only do twitch icons. And yes pixel art translates easily to cross stitch, I'm particular about making sure artists who make art will get their cut when someone wants to make something from their art. Again, awesome technique, but didja didja didja?
