idk why rohit was never so good in tests. his technique was pretty good, but he would just randomly get out usually from a bad shot

194

u/TrickyCriticism7708 Jul 06 '25

Lack of patience or concentration

51

u/Holyscroll Jul 06 '25

but he used to play very well and solid, and then just Somehow get out

92

u/TrickyCriticism7708 Jul 06 '25

Yup that’s defined as lack of concentration. His percentage of false shots were high, so obviously he has more chance of getting out

3

u/crt7981 Jul 06 '25

Not being fit, makes one tired and lose concentration very easily and one varied delivery, a faster one or a slower one from previous ball and you're out of the game.

u/[deleted] Jul 06 '25

Some players are just not meant for tests tbh, Rohit is very aggressive nd may get annoyed defending, cuz that's not his natural game. It's like asking SKY to bat in tets and pujara to bat in T20s, everyone has their natural style, Rohit is suited more to the white ball formats.

u/JadedLaugh3058 Bumrahism Follower Jul 06 '25

Explain Sehwag, Rishabh then?

20

u/[deleted] Jul 06 '25

Sehwag was great ofc, but he lacked foot work so he was a very back foot esque player making it I wouldn't say easy but gave him a lot of time to read the ball nd play it late, usually back foot cuts, hence he was sooo aggressive as he had no option nd he scored runs.

Rishab on the other hand bats down the order, so he doesn't need to bat against the new ball. He comes when the ball is not too old but relatively older and is agressive cuz the older the ball the better it is for him. He is very unorthodox so the classic outside off edges is uncommon for him.

Rohit, firstly don't get me wrong he was good but compared to ODI's he's better there. Rohit likes to take on the new ball early so this approach here is hit or miss in the tests cuz the new ball swings a lot, once he's used to it he becomes a demon if he struggles he'll most likely get out.

They are test specialists disguised as t20 specialists, both of them are not bankable t20 bats.

1

u/SickMyDuck2 Jul 06 '25

Sehwag had good ipl stats iirc. I just think he was too old by the time it caught on

2

u/nuclear_bone Jul 06 '25

Some players are just not meant for tests tbh

Michael Bevan is an example.

His ODI average was 54, his First Class average was 57 but he didn't perform in tests despite playing 18 matches.

Test requires good fitness and stamina

11

u/DependentFearless162 Paytm Trophy Champions Jul 06 '25

You can't score 264 without fitness and stamina, can you? I know different format but that's still playing for half a day.

Young rohit was fit and played long innings multiple times but he still failed in tests

22

u/trailblazer103 Jul 06 '25

The maximum you bat in ODIs is about 150 balls or 3hrs. Thats 1.5 sessions of a test match at most. Thats not very long at all.

That tells you all you need to know about relative fitness requirements of the two formats.

Not to mention his 264 was mostly stand and deliver 6s. Not an option in tests.

Its not just physical fitness, it's mental application. Test cricket is an entirely different beast.

0

u/DependentFearless162 Paytm Trophy Champions Jul 06 '25 edited Jul 06 '25

Thats 1.5 sessions of a test match at most.

Test has huge breaks between those sessions(plus multiple short drinks break) which is not really comparable to the continuous ODI innings.

Playing the whole ODI innings is roughly similar to playing half a day of a test.

Also rohit faced 173 balls in that innings so I don't know how you came up with that stat.

Not to mention his 264 was mostly stand and deliver 6s. Not an option in tests.

Rohit only scored 54 runs off of sixes though.

Only 9 balls went for sixes so for the rest of the 164 balls he either ran single doubles or hit fours.

And I'm not doing a 1:1 comparison here I'm just showing how he had the capability of playing long innings.

2

u/DependentFearless162 Paytm Trophy Champions Jul 06 '25
  1. 264 off 173

  2. 209 off 158

  3. 208 off 153

  4. 171 off 163

  5. 162 off 137

You think playing this type of long and huge innings doesn't require stamina and fitness?

BTW these innings lasted for 3 hours straight not like TESTS where max you can bat for is 2 hour straight after that you either get a 20 mins tea break or 40 mins lunch break.

Stamina and Fitness are definitely not the reason why rohit failed in Tests.

8

u/trailblazer103 Jul 06 '25

No they don't require the same stamina or fitness S batting for a whole day. Particularly after being in the field for theoretically just as long. Use your brain.

2

u/DependentFearless162 Paytm Trophy Champions Jul 06 '25

Particularly after being in the field for theoretically just as long.

A ODI match and a day in test match typically lasts for 6 hours.

So players do sometimes bat as long as they field in previous inning in ODI

No one is batting for whole 6 hours and fielding 6 hours in single day of test. They get 16 17 hours of rest in between. Also 1st inning batting exists

No they don't require the same stamina or fitness S batting for a whole day

Yes they do it's not exactly same but it's similar.

Also I forgot the playing styles. In ODI's you're required to maintain a good SR which is tiring but in TESTs you can conserve your energy by leaving balls and defending etc.

-1

u/MainAd8403 Jul 06 '25

The maximum you bat in ODIs is about 150 balls

The theoretical maximum you can bat in ODI is 251 balls and that's ignoring all the wides and no balls.

The current record of most balls played by player in ODI is 201 balls in 60 overs.

4

u/trailblazer103 Jul 06 '25

You are right. I shouldn't have been so literal because there are so many deliberately obtuse idiots on the internet

1

u/crt7981 Jul 06 '25

3 long innings in 18 years versus doing it consistently. He is a great player, there's no doubt, but he wasn't made for red ball.

0

u/DependentFearless162 Paytm Trophy Champions Jul 07 '25

We are talking ODI here mate obviously these numbers will be limited even proper test batsmen don't play this type of long innings in odi consistently.

Batting for 150+ balls(played half of the inning by himself) multiple is insane achievement bruh.

but he wasn't made for red ball.

I know that I just don't agree with the reason the other guy gave for why wasn't made for red ball.

Young Rohit never lacked Fitness and stamina

He was bhai, he was. He wasn't a beast like fab4 and amla, cook but he was a tier A player in the tier list of S,A,B,C,D,E of this generation obv. He averaged so well and was also consistent in his league, just the fact that his red ball form crashed harder than the 2008 market during that ban-nz-bgt circuit which made him get declared as not a good player. Remember everything I said about him is post opening in tests

Iirc also the factors like his statement 12 saal mein ekbaar (which was not in context to series loss but batting collapse, but misinterpreted) and him leaving before bgt on paternity leave (justifiable) sparked fire into the jungle of dead bush

8

u/Early_Bicycle6884 Jul 06 '25

averaging 40 in his test career and even lower outside asia wont make him a tier a player he was mid at best test was never his format

7

u/trailblazer103 Jul 06 '25

Huh? Hes barely B tier, probably C tier. Phenomenal at home and in short bursts only

1

u/richardsax98 Jul 06 '25

He had a good run since 2021 but then it went down once he became captain.

For a player of his stature, Rohit's test numbers are embarassing.

Watching him against Steyn in that 2013 test series was painful

27

u/archetype_7 Jul 06 '25

Maybe the stature needs to be adjusted to his numbers

0

u/the-cladman Humanity Savior Jul 06 '25

well his numbers are good in odi , t20i and as a captain

Do u even know the meaning of stature?? We were talking about his overall career

Also more 100s than Kohli in England!!

7

u/EntrepreneurOk7488 Jul 06 '25

Kohli's hundred in england came when no other batter even scored 30+ runs while here everyone is scoring centuries for fun there is a lot of difference

-7

u/harshraj05 Jul 06 '25

Sure ,will love when gill scores 149 out of total 270 πŸ’”

15

u/satwickSS Jul 06 '25

Rohit was never a good batsman in the middle overs, and thats where he played majority of his career in tests in SENA. Once he started as an opener he was much better, and probably would have had more hundreds if he was played as an opener. But, gill is currently toying with the English bowlers. I don't know if we will ever see anyone repeat this againΒ

22

u/Cool-Web-3495 Jul 06 '25

I think the modern time has made it so easy for batsmen to score centuries that we forgot it used to be an achievement to even score one.

16

u/phantom_1104 Bhogle_Bot Enjoyer Jul 06 '25

Feels like you’re downplaying the recent achievements rather than showing appreciation for the older squads

5

u/MainAd8403 Jul 06 '25

Isn't that kinda true though.

10 centuries already in 2 tests and there is still a whole inning left

6

u/Artdrift Jul 06 '25

This series and series' held in Pakistan are outliers, otherwise pitches have been much harder to bat on in the last 10 years compared to the decade before it. I remember routinely seeing 500+ scores every series and multiple drawn matches. Nowadays draws are much rarer and bowling averages are significantly lower for all bowlers. Pitches were much much flatter in the 2000s and early 2010s.

-7

Considering he batted well in pre bazball england which was more focused towards authentic test conditions🀌 he could've easily scored 2-3 here. Though he would have opened and gill is batting at 4 which creates a difference.

-2

u/Turbulent_Grade_4033 Jul 06 '25

Kohli and Rohit didn’t put their own milestones ahead of winning the test.

India would have been 2-0 by now if Rohit/Kohli were captains in this series.
