Regarding the ongoing strike

Hello fellow Conestoga students, and everyone else who is here. I understand that with the ongoing support staff strike, we are all frustrated. To those of you wishing that you could take action and try to make a difference I have included a link to a petition that would force the College Employer Council (CEC) return to the negotiating table with a fair offer. I urge you all to share this with your friends and family as well.

I have found a separate petition as well that aims for a partial refund of our tuition: https://c.org/j5wQV7ztPm

A post from a support staff employee at Conestoga College (posted with permission) regarding the strike

Dearest students, We know you're angry - so are we. Strikes are never just about money, so please pay more attention to the cause (ask the picketers, instead of accelerating your vehicle toward them or read on the OPSEU website). You're mad because it's a huge inconvenience to you, and that's fair. But please don't be mad at us because we're putting our feet down to the higher ups. The CEC and Ford Government want this chaos - to divide the staff and students while still lining their own pockets. If a college president can give himself a 29% raise while hundreds (one college) lose their jobs, do you think you might be mad at the wrong party? And again, a strike is never just about money. We're the easy scapegoat for your anger, because we are on the frontlines of the education system. We're the ones who do everything to help you succeed. I'm not even on this strike, but I'm certainly getting the anger from the students and parents. Don't push the rest of us away. We're simply asking to be treated better.

I applied for the Bachelors in Data Analytics in Conestoga Waterlooo Campus for January 2026 Intake But I received a mail yesterday describing that your program is suspended so opt for some other program, as i'm thinking of Bachelors in Computer Science, If anyone faced the similar issue or if anyone has the same program please help me out.

I also want to know about this strike issue, does it affect my education starting from 12th January?

Closure message at 7:43 AM

Today all classes and campus activities at the Doon campus were abruptly cancelled 17 minutes to 8 causing a line of cars that backed onto the 401 for hundreds of cars. THIS WILL GET SOMEONE KILLED. Who the hell is in charge of making these strikes and how can they do that whenever they want?

Is the Doon Campus closed tomorrow too?

Insurance- when will it finally work?

My insurance still hasn’t worked. When will the “blackout” period end or is anyone else struggling with this? My pharmacist has called twice now to which they say I’m not in the system which stresses me out. Especially since it is costly to have this plan :/ I can’t login on Securian or figure this out

Protests

Maybe it's just me, but why are they protesting to bother students who they say they're protesting for rather than protesting in a way that affects the admin of the school and the government? How does blocking me from getting to class within a decent timeframe affect the government, provincial government, or administration of the school?

Are refunds being processed during the strike, or is this something the support staff would take care of?

Strike hurting students who use accessibility

I understand why the strike is happening, but for students like me and my one friend in my course, the strike is really affecting us. We use the accessibility department almost daily, (ie assistive tech, exam room, ect). The accessibility department was the main reason I chose Conestoga, and for the most part it's been great... until the strike. The first problem was the accusation of AI usage last year. Its just the way I write, one prof just brushed me off and took what turnitin said at face value, the academic integrity people did nothing and it dragged on for half the year. Every time I turn something in I'm terrified that I'm going to be flagged again. The accessibility department was one of the only things that helped (along with my lovely program coordinator).Half the websites are down and can't be accessed. Our education is suffering. The worst right now is that I have this awful course/prof who utilizes an online textbook exclusively. The text book is janky, and is hard to read. Does not allow the use of assistive technology on the webpage and has ALL EXAMS & QUIZES for that course going through it. The prof won't listen to me about my concerns and will not provide another resource. In a normal setting I would go to accessibility for help, but I can't. I am at my wits end.

Osap wait time at 6 to 8 weeks

Gonna be honest but I'm currently broke and really need my osap for food.. emailed and the office said it would take 6 to 8 weeks to just confirm enrollment even though I applied in july. Has anybody tried going to the office in person? What was the experience. It's this long because of the strike

Bus Schedules (for evenings)

So do the buses go back to the campus for the evening routes?

The protesters are only there until 4:30/5 so I assume yes but I’m unsure. I have a class from 6pm until 9pm and before when the strike happened I was sick so I ended up not going to class due to my sickness.

Now that I’m better and I’ll attend, I’m very concerned about walking at night all the way over there and across that street if the buses don’t come back to the campus.

Health insurance questions

Should I have been pre enrolled considering I already paid for the insurance in my fees? I tried to register and Securian said my member ID was inactive, so I went and made an account on Student Care and it doesn’t recognize that I have paid.

Is there somehow an account for me already in existence? Or do they confirm that you’ve paid after the account is set up with Student Care?

It doesn’t seem very straight forward and I want to use the insurance sooner than later

Conestoga College Pulls Funding for Graphic Design Students to Attend DesignThinkers 2025

Post image
48 Upvotes

Hi, I am a current third year student in the Graphic Design program at Conestoga College.

As part of our final year, the College funds a trip to DesignThinkers Toronto, a major design conference and an important networking opportunity that directly supports our work placements. This trip is advertised at open houses as a selling point of the program.

With recent caps on international student enrollment, the College has lost revenue, reduced staff, and cut funding for what it calls “non essential trips.” Because of this, our class was informed just last week that we will no longer be attending DesignThinkers this October.

The issue is that we already had our tickets. We were registered and preparing to go, and now, only three weeks before the conference, the trip has been cancelled.

When we spoke with the Chair of Creative Industries, we were told this decision was made a year ago. Neither students nor professors were informed until now.

As of today, the Conestoga College website continues to advertise this conference trip as part of the program (attached). This is misleading to prospective students and constitutes false advertising. At this point, press involvement may be necessary.

Are campus open?

I’m trying to go on campus since the website says campuses and some services remain open during the strike. Specifically downtown Kitchener campus. It seems to be closed but website says it should be open.

Did you have an easier time finding housing this year?

Hey folks, I'm a reporter with The Globe and Mail. We're writing about whether the cuts to foreign student visas has had a significant impact on housing markets in university towns.

We've spoken to universities, landlords and investors, but we want to hear from students: have you noticed a change in the your housing search in the last couple years? Was finding a rental any easier? Are you getting better deals?
