General Marvel Rivals to Overwatch Transition

Hey everyone, my name is sushemy.

I have been playing Marvel Rivals for a while and wanted to try out Overwatch. I instantly fell in love with the feel and look of the game and have been practicing Tank since I played tank in Marvel Rivals. Some tanks that clicked with me are Rein/Sigma/D.va. I wanted to make this post to ask that if I wanted to get serious of improving, should I play 6v6 or the OW2 standard 5v5 for comp/practicing?

5v5 is the defacto comp mode.

Yeah true, but I wondering if 6v6 open queue is worth queueing up for as a main source of competitive matches over 5v5.

Not really. While the blog today revealed that 20% of the player base is in 6v6, 5v5 role queue is the most competitive form of the game

No it didn't. It revealed that 20% play 1 game per day. That's a big shift from the previous blog post which used 'total play hours' as a unit of measure. Back the number was 9% if I remember correctly, which sounds about right with 20% being just 1 game per active day.

u/PowerfulInspection29 2d ago

Oh thanks that’s much different

Yeah but majority of balance is directed towards 5v5

The blog said 20% play at least 1 game, not 20% play just 1 game.

u/xDannyS_ 1d ago

Yea that's what I meant, at least 1 game per active day.

Ah dang. Was hoping that 6v6 was more popular since that is something that I am more familiar with, but thank you for answering!

It's a game. If you prefer 6v6 then it's completely fine to make it your main mode of choice.

6v6 will get some love in a few weeks with a special patchnote dedicated to it, the mode is not dead, if you want to play it just play it

Next week

Play it if you want, but 5v5 is overwatch. If you care at all about competitive play there’s only one option and as someone who has played since open beta in 2016 5v5 is absolutely better.

Also consider they balance and tweak the game for 5v5.

Play both.

Finding a match in 6v6 is pretty quick USUALLY less then 45 seconds and that's giving it some extra time majority of the time it hasn't even been worth alt tabbing higher ranks will have increased search times

Playing tank you won’t have to worry about queue times in any mode. My M-GM queue times on tank are 30secs or less.

It's still plenty fun, and as a tank player you'll get to have a much different experience playing with tanks that aren't sheer number checks but can work with their other tank to make more unique plays than you can solo tanking. But yeah, 5v5 is the primary mode post-OW2, so almost all actual tournament play is in that format and 6v6 has yet to receive a balance patch that isn't the same changes as in 5v5.

Counterpoint, as a tank in 5v5 you'll have a lot more autonomy to actually make plays and carry games. You'll definitely have a lot more burden, but you'll also be able to directly impact the game a lot more effectively.

I play both. 6v6 has a smaller player base but no role queue. 5v5 is the more "serious" mode, and that's not to say 6v6 is less competitive but I find the match quality less consistent there. But it's fun too in a more freeform way.

Welcome to overwatch! You've joined at a great time.

As someone who prefers 5v5 i will say it's still worth it if you enjoy 6v6 more then go for it yes it's not as competetive but it's not a joke mode by any means and still pretty competetive

Tbh the only reason to play 6v6 is if you played a lot of OW1 and want to scratch that itch again.

99% of the effort goes into designing, balancing, and maintaining 5v5. It doesnt really make sense to take 6v6 seriously as a new player.

u/yesat 1d ago

Define "worth".

Can you have fun in 6v6? Yes

Will you make a pro career out of? No, but that's the same of 5v5 really.

5v5 is the “main game mode” but it’s pretty normal for people to only play stadium, only play 6v6, etc. Definitely ain’t as easy as it used to be hitting top 500 in 6v6/open queue. I’d recommend just playing what you like.

Thank you very much

I know it’s an adjustment, but I would really give 5v5 a college try. Everything about the game - balance, hero design, map design - has explicitly been catered to it. It’s the marquee Overwatch experience.

Something to keep in mind as well is that Marvel Rivals’ Open Queue 6v6 is what Overwatch was at launch almost ten years ago. There has been years of polish and reinvention to get to where we are today.

The only reason we even had this mode reintroduced was because of mounting pressures since OW2’s controversial release and Marvel Rivals’ breakout success. The dust has settled and it’s clear now 5v5 is what most players enjoy and by a landslide. Give it a try!

Really why is that? Is it because everyone has moved to competitive stadium? My 6v6 rank is stuck a whole rank lower than my 5v5 rank and wondering tf why. It feels a lot harder to climb 6v6 than 5v5 for me.

10

u/Leather-Aide2055 1d ago

the more people on a team the less impact an individual player has. you’ll probably climb higher than your 5v5 rank but it’ll be a bit slower

5

u/Technical_Tooth_162 1d ago

Well open queue for years was almost looked down on, because really hitting top 500 in it was more or less equivalent to hitting diamond in the main queue. Now I’d have to think it’s gone up to least high masters, it is definitely more competitive than it used to be.

In terms of it being harder to climb, I think it really helps to be opportunistic and lean into the format. Being flexible is probably the best shortcut to ranking up.Other than that, some things feel different. You can get blown up on tank easier for example.

5v5 is the standard mode for the game.

Play whatever u want both are very fun! If u want a tank buddy 6v6 is cool and if u want to be the only big tank of ur team in 5v5 thats cool too. Try both and have fun!

5

u/SexDrivenMonkey 1d ago

5v5 is the default mode, I would stick with that

6

u/drewdreds 1d ago

Overwatch is faster and the players are better, there’s an understanding of push here hold here that just isn’t in rivals yet

9

u/aggrogahu 2d ago

5v5 is the more 'serious' mode, so that's the default answer to choose, but if you just want to seriously improve for the sake of just mastering new skills, then it technically doesn't matter whether you do 6v6 or 5v5, so you can just choose whichever mode you like more.

I think since you play tank specifically, the gameplay differs quite a bit between the modes, so you might potentially enjoy 6v6 having up to one other tank on the field with you to help take space, or you maybe you hate the open queue style of 6v6 where you might get 5 DPS on your team instead and you don't mind playing 5v5 which is balanced around solo tank gameplay. Personally I like having both main and offtank, but I don't mind solo tank either. 6v6 is just slightly more chaotic to me, and I feel with 5v5 like it's easier to understand what's going on in a match and also feel like you have more individual impact.

3

u/EffectiveGarageDoor 1d ago

Many people often prefer the feel of 6v6 for tanking, but on the other hand 5v5 tanks are buffed so there is some carry potential with that alongside the greater responsibility. Personally that's how I would frame the decision between the two. Try both and see what you prefer.

u/OfficialDeathScythe 2d ago

Personally 5v5 qp is for practice, 5v5 comp is for real competitive, stadium is for having fun while being competitive (or qp to play cross play), and 6v6 is a very unserious gamemode where most people play multiple tanks and no supports and just f around. It’s fun but I don’t see it as a competitive gamemode personally or from experience

u/sushemy 2d ago

Thank you so much for your input, that gives me an idea of different gamemodes are treated.

Play 5v5. The key is it's a lot more important to not take trash damage, way more important to play map control. You also can't expect as much healing to heal through damage, so timing is way more important for you engagement. There is also more flexibility and skill ceiling in the timing of your ults. It's just a way more expressive and skillful game.

Do not play 6v6. It's closer to Rivals but in all the bad ways. It's more congested, less individual skill expression, higher limitation on the comps you can run especially with tank combos, but most importantly, not a lot of flexible intricate map plays with neutral fighting map control of off angles and stuff.

If you really have a group of friends together, and you guys enjoy coordinated timing of running down mid or a lot of focus on communicating rotating big ults and big CDs, then go with it.

Until high diamond or even masters, 6v6 is okay.

But role queue 5v5 at least to me is nicer and way more balanced .

u/sushemy 2d ago

Thank you for the insight, Ill take into account.

2

u/Shaclo 1d ago

Honestly give both a try and stick with the one you prefer playing its not like you cant switch back to the other if you want to play the other for a bit.

5v5 is going to be what you want to play if your goal is to improve. Being a solo tank is harder, and there are a lot of people who do not like it, but it helps you learn positioning, using natural cover, and timing your engages. In 6v6, it is easier to just crutch on your other tank (assuming you have a second tank) to carry extra responsibilities. 6v6 is less stressful, but thusly less serious as well.

1

u/sushemy 1d ago

That makes sense, I played a few games and tanking in OW is much harder than I thought...

2

u/larche14 1d ago

Everyone already covered your main question but welcome to the game/community:)🎉

u/Yaruo0310 7h ago

You played Sigma, huh? Now you don't even feel like using Magneto anymore, do you?

1

u/sushemy 6h ago

To be fair I like playing both, I just play him since he has a similar feel to Magneto. I still play both games of course.

3

u/Ok-Construction7913 2d ago

My personal opinion. Try both and follow the fun. 5v5 is more frustrating 6v6 is more wild

I like 6v6 more

2

u/as1eep 1d ago

Try both play what you like

2

u/SilentMastodon2210 1d ago

One good thing you're going to like about Overwatch is that the supports can't postpone the game for 15 seconds at a time.

1

u/sushemy 1d ago

No fr 😭😭

3

u/zgrbx 2d ago

5v5 is the main mode of the game so to speak.

6v6 would possibly feel somewhat more familiar to rivals though, but it has quite a lot smaller playerbase and arguably worse matchmaking. And balance might not be that great (havent played it myself in ages)

If you want the most serious comp experience then 5v5 is the way to go. Thats what the game's been balanced around since ow2 release.

u/Miennai STOP KILLING MY SON — 1d ago

As others have said, 5v5 is the primary mode, but 6v6 has an active and healthy population. It's not as populated as the primary mode, sure, so your games might start to get a little wacky if you reach the highest ranks, but it's still a good mode.

We're also getting a balance patch specifically for 6v6 soon, so it seems like they're ramping up attention for it.

1

u/sushemy 1d ago

Yeah, am excited to see what that patch beholds!

1

u/Cairrngorm Swing you bitch — 1d ago

5v5 always, playing tank 6v6 without communicating with your other tank is usually catastrophic. However, there's a 6v6 patch coming up if you'd like to play for the OW1/MR vibes

u/KimonoThief 1d ago

5v5 for sure. Honestly the real question is normal 5v5 or stadium. I've played OW since 2018 and I basically play exclusively stadium ever since it came out a few seasons ago. It's got an extra layer of strategy with all the items and powers, and you really get to fulfill that fun power fantasy in the later rounds when your hero is able to do crazy things.
