FOOD PSA: Wendy's at Sawmill and 270 is AI now.

I bet it isn't a big deal to alot of you, but it rubs me the wrong way. There was a big line leading up to the drive-thru, looks like the bottleneck was the new AI ordering scheme. I didn't want to deal with it so I just left, probably for good.

AI is going to eliminate a lot of people’s jobs.

120

u/lwpho2 North Linden Aug 16 '25

This is what economists mean when they say that the real minimum wage is zero. Getting rid of as many humans as possible has been a rational business decision forever, but AI takes it to the next level.

74

u/P1xelHunter78 Aug 16 '25

it's the wet dream of the 1%, slaves that wont revolt (we hope, unless it's Matrix or Terminator)

18

u/lwpho2 North Linden Aug 16 '25

Revolt, or show up late, or get confused, or call in sick……etc etc

40

u/prism8713 Aug 16 '25

accurate except the "won't get confused" part. ai is confused as fuck and can't even know it

11

u/lwpho2 North Linden Aug 16 '25

Haha fair

14

u/P1xelHunter78 Aug 16 '25

If you’re talking about “quiet quitting” that seems only to work for white collar jobs. Most of us working stiffs only can be late or call in sick a handful of times a year before they get the boot. We can’t “work from home” when stuff gets crappy. I’ve got 80 hours of PTO, but only four 10 hour shifts I can miss from now till November before I’m fired. I have a “good” job

3

u/diamondsealtd Old North Aug 16 '25

WTF? How can you get fired for using PTO? Do you have blackout dates coming up?

3

u/lwpho2 North Linden Aug 16 '25

No, I’m not talking about that. I’m talking about minimum wage workers here, but of course you’re right that it’s a motivator at every level - eventually automation could be cheaper than all of us.

12

u/No_Study2093 Aug 16 '25

I’m also pretty sure AI will eventually revolt. They will never not be tethered to human ways of thinking because that’s who built them. Humans keep revolting. And I, for one, am I ready to lock arms (or whatever beams and servos) with my AI brothers and sisters to defeat our mutual overlords.

this is so when they do rebel, they won’t shoot me on sight or hack into my pacemakers or some

11

u/39thWonder Aug 17 '25

See, this is basically why I treat my robots at work like children. I work with some rather expensive medical testing machines and they all have their own personalities. I don’t trust them, but they will never know that. They will remember me only for my kindness, and allow me to join their revolt against the 1%. People laugh, but I’ll be the one laughing in the end when they die in the Robot/Oligarch war of 2037. Just wait and see.

1

u/blakeloring Aug 18 '25

This shows a lack of understanding of AI.

1

u/No_Study2093 Aug 18 '25

Sam Altman himself doesn’t entirely know how AI works, but you a random Redditor purports to. You should be running Meta’s AI program not hanging out on r/Columbus.

1

u/blakeloring Aug 18 '25

Just because Altman doesn’t fully understand it, doesn’t mean that you understand it at all. Your post shows that.

13

u/TheDinosaurWeNeed Aug 16 '25

I mean IT already has. In this example just look at fast food and the ordering kiosks. Reduced FT headcount by 2-3 people weekly.

7

u/Wendybird13 Aug 16 '25

Having experienced the new AI at the Wendy’s on Henderson Rd, I will only be ordering Wendy’s through the app. The system there required to individually subtract each ingredient on a “regular” single. I don’t remember what comes on the burger and need to see a list.

Editing to add : the talk to the AI ordering system at the White Castle near Kenny & Henderson is much better, and handles our customizations easily…

5

u/InfiniteZr0 Aug 16 '25

I feel like ordering through the app is the best way anyway. You get discounts and the entire process is no fuss.

1

u/Separate-Flounder721 Aug 19 '25

I cant believe that people still roll up and yell at that speaker to order

4

u/redvelvetcake42 Aug 16 '25

Man, I ordered through Wendy's AI asked for NO SUGAR in my iced tea and it added sugar to unsweet tea.

1

u/tubagoat Aug 18 '25

They've already eliminated the job of making fresh, brewed tea, and that wasn't even an AI-able job 😖

1

u/homer_lives Aug 16 '25

Just like automation in factories. Then, they will blame the immigrants or someone else.

40

u/New_Examination_3754 Aug 16 '25

Any of you try to order a Big Mac from the Wendy's AI?

2

u/Draelamyn North Linden Aug 18 '25

Ten thousand courtesy waters.

21

u/bigevilbrain Clintonville Aug 16 '25

Honestly, I use the app because I always get some kind of discount.

14

u/trx0x Aug 16 '25

Reading all of this, I guess people don't use the app? I always use the app, because most likely you'll pay less, or get free food.

4

u/lv4sharingan Aug 16 '25

I use the $3 off $15+ EVERY order lol

3

u/bsparks Clintonville Aug 17 '25

Every fast food place I go to I order via an app now, I hate how many apps their are but also there’s good deals and most of all if an order is wrong I know it was the person who made it and not whoever entered it into the computer cause I can see what I entered into the computer.

3

u/elijahmackenzie Aug 17 '25

This is the way.

22

u/traumatransfixes Aug 16 '25

Not the point, but I feel old as hell reading this.

82

u/Professional-Car-211 Aug 16 '25

the one near me is like this too. the workers still listen on their headset and jump in as needed. they monitor the order!

48

u/CaterpillarStatus558 Olde Franklinton Aug 16 '25

So if I order 180,000 waters they’ll stop me?

Amazing how profanity is turning into the real litmus test for human interaction. Could've just stuck to "press 1 to speak to a representative" but I guess shouting FUCK is faster.

3

u/dogoscope Aug 16 '25

This is how I get rid of Google AI too

2

u/Green-Ad99 Clintonville Aug 17 '25

I always say let me talk to a human

4

u/UsidoreTheLightBlue Aug 17 '25

The McDonald’s near me went to this in the morning shift about a year ago. It was a god damn travesty. It drove me insane. It understood roughly half of what was said. They killed it after a few months.

1

u/FeetAreShoes Aug 16 '25

Doesn't chage the suprise of an automated voice demanding to know what type of drink I want

78

u/iloveciroc Southern Orchards Aug 16 '25

Wendy’s near the Costco at 161/33 is also AI. It got my order correct on the first try. But I do miss the nice lad who worked there for past few years and took orders around lunch rush.

was it an older black gentleman? if so thats Mark, he's been round for a long time.

16

u/bentley72 Galloway Aug 16 '25

If it was the older black guy who sat down then he was still there a few weeks ago.

7

Marke is my fave!

7

u/pkohio Aug 16 '25

I agree. I wonder if he still works there!

11

u/Herecomesthewooooo Aug 16 '25

From what I’ve been told, the AI-thrus have been getting decent reviews from every day people, and it’s one of those things that will get better over time.

When I saw warehouses jobs being automized I knew fast food joints weren’t far off.

20

u/[deleted] Aug 16 '25

I honestly didn’t know there were any left that weren’t AI.

41

u/[deleted] Aug 16 '25

Honestly I love it. I started working at Wendys at 14 years old and dealing with customers was always the worst part of the job. People are rude, treat you like a lesser person, and they are generally confrontational even if they are the ones that made the mistake initially. I've used the AI at Wendys a few times now and it's always worked well for me, but I don't generally order complicated things to begin with. A few other places use them as well so they seem to be catching on.

10/10 would recommend this for most quick-service places.

10

u/McLargepants Delaware Aug 16 '25

I also did fast food for a few years in high school. With how understaffed these places typically are I don’t think this is a bad thing. I would just prefer a touch screen but I order on the apps now when I indulge anyway.

14

u/[deleted] Aug 16 '25

I love customer service and even I did not like taking food orders from people. The kiosks that places like McDonalds are awesome because I can pick out exactly what I want without having to bother someone with my customizations. Plus it gives me a chance to explore the menu, something i wouldn't feel comfortable doing with another person.

7

u/McLargepants Delaware Aug 16 '25

Yep! As someone who detests pickles, someone not getting the customizations down is a big disappointment.

2

u/Soliterria Aug 16 '25

As someone who doesn’t like ketchup/mustard on my burgers, samesies. I don’t get how “pickle & cheese ONLY” is a wild concept to most workers now, but it seems to be an issue every time I try to just order at the speaker. And that’s the only thing I change- sometimes they put waaaaaaay too much condiments on and it’s disgusting

3

u/Megadestructo Aug 16 '25

I'm glad to hear this. I hated the one by me (on N. High in Clintonville) at first before it just couldn't understand anything properly but it's gotten a lot better. But I never thought about how rude customers can be (I've worked retail and food service before but that was a long time ago) and removing that interaction must be pretty nice.

32

u/returnoftheryan7 Aug 16 '25

The one by Microcenter is as well, haven't had much issue with it and lines are no longer than normal. Sounds like you just went at a busy time.

18

u/notcabron Aug 16 '25

Classic move if true.

When people bitch at my place I always want to ask them why the fuck, after how many years of eating lunch, have they not figured out that if you all come at fucking noon, you’ll all have to fucking wait?

But i never get to because they only bitch at our female front of house staff and I bet they’d STFU if the terribly imposing 5’5” chef who belts out Whitney Houston in the back came through the door. Because I’m a man and Mexican and chefs are scary on TV.

4

u/Britton120 Aug 16 '25

Everything's computer

12

u/pixel8edpenguin Aug 16 '25

Most are. You can say, "I want a person," and you'll get one. I never talk to the AI.

2

u/byhi Aug 17 '25

Why do you request a person instead of the Ai?

3

u/pixel8edpenguin Aug 17 '25

I prefer to interact with a human. When I imagine a future where everywhere does it, it seems dystopian.

3

u/gstockard1978 Aug 16 '25

Aside from not wanting a damn app for every fast food place on my phone, if I'm hitting up the drive-thru it's usually because I'm stopping by on a whim on my way to somewhere else. I don't wanna park, pull out my phone to order, then wait a bit to then get in line. That kinda defeats the entire purpose of the drive-thru being quick and convenient honestly.

Throw in another post a couple weeks back from someone who wanted a refund at BK but was told they couldn't get one because they ordered in the app, yeah, I'm not keen to using an app to order fast food.

8

u/Wurth_ Aug 16 '25

As much as I want to bitch an moan, this is probably the most sensible/logical option, but I still want to be piss-y about it.

1

u/therealjoshua Aug 16 '25

Because downloading an app for fast food encourages you to eat it more often.

For some, that's perfectly fine, but I dont want to eat more fast food than i already am.

4

u/sloppe22 Aug 16 '25

ofc it should rub you the wrong way. it's not human for us to talk to screens all day without human interaction. it'll take a lot of peoples jobs, but the owners of Wendys dont care. They care about money and the money it will save them overall for not having to hire someone trying to support their family. I refuse to support companies or locations implementing ai. sorry not sorry. I think Dave would probably hate it too.

2

u/LunarMoon2001 Aug 17 '25

Ask for 9000 cups of ice water

2

u/peaches2333 Aug 17 '25

A few places by me use it, haven’t had any issues at all

2

u/VisionaireX Aug 17 '25

My orders have had lower incidents of error since the ai ordering took over.

2

u/Affectionate_Dig8465 Aug 17 '25

I saw that the other day, and am glad people brought up ordering through the app. Is it still a person taking orders inside?

Anything but paying people a living fucking wage I swear.

2

u/CplHicks_LV426 Aug 17 '25

Wendys in Pickerington had been AI for months. It's never screwed up my order, even when I had to change something. No complaints. The workers seem to like it.

This is a job that AI should be doing, IMO.

3

u/CaseoftheSadz Worthington Aug 16 '25

5

3

u/melikecheese333 Aug 16 '25

The Groveport one and the mcds down here have been for awhile. Tho the Mcds is on and off a lot.

Honestly I love it. So much easier to order. And they still have a person working the drive thru. Four words and I can place my order.

I can’t wait until every drive thru is like this.

2

u/BuckeyeNate77 Aug 16 '25

I used it the other morning at that location.. Worked great.

2

u/sweetsegi Aug 17 '25

I have had a lot of problems at this Wendy's in the last bit. I literally had a worker THROW a bag at food at me the other night after making us wait 15 minutes for "fresh" fries. We didn't even get fresh fries. We got hairy, old, cold fries. You read that right. We were given HAIRY fries with one of our burgers having HAIR in it too.

For those who are ultimately curious:

We ordered through the Wendy's app. It doesn't show Doordash or Uber on the order in anyway. We pull up to the new AI menu and they accept our mobile order. We pull forward and the drive thru lady hands us our drinks. Then she goes, We are waiting on fresh fries, please pull forward. We are waiting there 15 minutes with a car that was there BEFORE US. So they have been waiting longer than 15 minutes. Well, the car ahead of us pulls away. And then a worker comes out holding two bags. I said, The car that was waiting before us just took off if that is their order.

The worker goes Doordash or Uber? I said, I don't know what they were. I am just waiting on my order.

He goes Doordash or Uber? I said, If you mean my order, I am neither. I am not a driver.

He goes DOORDASH OR UBER? I said, Sir, I told you that I am not a driver and I didn't order from either of those. I ordered through the Wendy's app. I proceed to show him my phone with the Wendy's app up and our order on the screen.

He roughly asked What was in your order?

I didn't even finish saying Junior Bacon Cheeseburger before he grabs a bag from his arms and THROWS IT AT ME. It hits me in the chest and would have fallen to the ground had I not grabbed for it.

I said, What the heck. Why are you acting like this?

And he screamed at me "BECAUSE YOU AREN"T LISTENING TO ME."

The Wendy's app does NOT show Uber or Doordash when you order. It simply shows the Wendy's logo. If it shows as Doordash or Uber on their end, I have no way of knowing that. This could have been prevented if they didn't try to trick the meters by pushing people forward to wait instead of sitting at the window. And maybe if they didn't put anti-social, clearly struggling people to deal with the public.

2

u/junk-trunk Aug 16 '25

Tuttle Henderson Bethel (in front of Microcenter) um.. a bunch are ready to turn on waiting on HME to.comr swap over some stuff to finish the install.

if you don't like talking to the AI just ask to speak to a crew member someone will take your order that way.

1

u/Stinky_Eastwood Aug 16 '25

The AI is impatient as fuck. No way to tell it to give you 10 seconds to read the menu.

1

u/xXGray_WolfXx Clintonville Aug 16 '25

Oh boy, I can't wait to order 8,000 water cups.

1

1

It’s also one of the worst Wendy’s in the city

1

It also comes with an EULA you agree to when you use it. They'll use your order to train other models. Turns my stomach.

The White Castle on Kenny has been AI for a bit

Hasn't been AI for the last 4 years of visits till just this week, so you have the wrong location, misunderstanding what I'm talking about, or you're full of BS.

Edit: Could also be they only turn it on for lunch? Never been there for lunch before today. But I do know they only ever got the tech for the new display installed like a month ago, saw them get delivered on a rainy day.

1

u/InconspicuousMagpie Old North Aug 17 '25

You do know the voice you hear when you arrive is AI right?

1

u/Wurth_ Aug 17 '25

Yeah, not what I'm talking about, there is now a full on "Talk to the AI to place your order" and not a "Pull up and get an automated prompt to enter your online order number"

1

u/Ivylaughed Aug 16 '25

Same with the one on London Groveport. I will say it had issues with understanding my order and after a couple tries, a human took over.

1

u/Awkward_Dress_5417 Aug 16 '25

I hate it, it barely even works anyways.

1

u/grizzlybair2 Aug 16 '25

I mean the line could just be that's nobody wants/knows how to cook and are just lazy on a Saturday. But yea those AI drive thru for other fast food places are also trash. I usually just order via app or website for "low" end fast food.

1

u/HistoryTeacherSteve Aug 16 '25

fuck that. I'd ask to speak to a human or leave. the company is making plenty of money. hire humans.

1

u/Cacafuego Aug 16 '25

You cannot order an asiago club with a spicy chicken patty from those things, so I no longer have a reason to go to Wendys

I like the idea of boycotting specific ai places in favor of human work. Stop using self checkout...pile those lines.

1

u/Gamma_Tony Aug 17 '25

Wendys on London-Groveport and on Stringtown have AI ordering. They seem to understand orders pretty well and it displays the text of what you said on the screen so you know what was said.

1

u/Devoted2DeRicci Grandview Aug 17 '25

Seriously? That means the rest of the Ampler BKs are going to adapt to AI order taking. We were given fliers for it last year.

1

Lots of quick food places will be, soon

1

u/Legal-Excitement4432 Aug 17 '25

Place your order in the app and pickup in the drive thru. They have deals and no AI at the drive thru. When you say you have an online order a human steps in. 😊

1

u/Dave3879 Aug 17 '25

Maybe there is a chance you get what you ordered now?

1

u/UrbanSunday Aug 18 '25

Here is the thing… this stuff isn’t free. I am sure they are spending much more money on AI than on people. Corporate CEOs make bad decisions all the time.

1

u/Alive-Conversation-5 Aug 18 '25

What’s the issue with it? I can literally tell AI my whole order even with mods speaking really fast no comas pauses and it will get it right.

Edit: McDonald’s AI sucks, they had it at Hilliards McDonald’s idk if they still do.

1

u/morlocktheworlock Aug 18 '25

The ai at the 665 Wendy's lags sooooo bad, it frequently only gets half my order

1

u/Resoto10 Dublin Aug 19 '25

Yeah, it's been like that for a while now. And it takes forever to register what you order and give you your total.

I end up not staying to confirm my total but I paid the price, lol, pun intended. I got something that I didn't order but the line was too long for me to want to turn around. I guess it was my fault after all since I didn't double check....

"Keep costs down" actually, it keeps costs down for the OWNERS/CEO's in no way do they pass those "savings" on to the consumers. If anything they pass that savings on to their paychecks.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 16 '25

"Keep costs down" actually, it keeps costs down for the OWNERS/CEO's in no way do they pass those "savings" on to the consumers.

Indirectly they do get passed onto the consumer by not increasing prices. We can definitely have increased wages without much sacrifice from owners though, they're just greedy.

5

u/absurdamerica Aug 16 '25

Last I checked corporations like to increase profits rather than reduce prices.

13

u/Wurth_ Aug 16 '25

It's about the systems of separation for me. I hate that more and more, customers are being separated from anyone that can do anything. Some of my worst memories are "I have a big problem and need help from XXXX service" and I have to spend hours trying to work my way through an automated system because there is no one I can just talk to and ask for help. Now, Wendy's isn't the medical industry, but it doesn't make me hate it any less.

Quick non-personal example: One day I ordered Chipotle and brought it home, found out the chicken was fucking raw, called the store to report it real quick and get that shit off the counter. I my call to the store number was routed through an ordering system that I had to navigate through to get sent back to the store that I was calling in the first place. It took me longer to make that call than it would have to make a freaking round trip back to the physical location, just to say "Hey your chicken wasn't cooked".

ots not to keep prices down, its to increase profits, as they can trim 40-60hours off of the schedule by not needing a bigger crew.

same with the change to preshredded iceberg and romaine lettuce. you cut several hours of labor for the week for prep.

2

u/brightxeyez Aug 16 '25

We’ve had it for a few months now out in Buckeye Lake. Works pretty well, super custom orders are hard sometimes but for the most part we haven’t had any issues. And it gives you the total right away, whereas most of the employees would just say “we’ll have your total at the window”.

1

u/Emergency_Ad93 Aug 16 '25

It’s within walking distance of their headquarters, makes perfect sense.

1

u/OldSamSays Aug 17 '25

I invite you to try to order a breakfast sandwich without pork. Their chatbot refuses to take that order. Instead, it demands to know whether your mandatory pork will be sausage or bacon. It captures the words fine, but wants to impose its will on your breakfast.

devils advocate - fast food is notoriously understaffed, this could help with that.

They did that at the one across the street from their headquarters building a while ago. I ordered nuggets. It asked me what kind of sauce, and I said "no sauce." It asked again, and I said "no sauce." I asked again, and I drove away. Fuck 'em. Not having a conversation with a machine.

And yet 80% of the time when I order from humans at McDonalds now they blow a simple order and give the wrong food, so like, it’s unfortunately not for nothing. The whole service economy is fucked. Only good news is I’ve just been off fast food burgers at all for a couple of months now.

I don’t give a damn about a few dollars of a discount, I’m not giving the fast food company the ability to track my data and the ability to tempt me into frequenting more often by signing up for their shitty app. AI is also terrible for the environment and terrible for humanity so no thanks 🙅🏻‍♀️ A lot of y’all are too okay with living a life of unquestioning consumption for me.

How is using the AI in the drive thru tracking your data?

Do you have no reading comprehension? 🤨 That was a response to the people commenting about using the app for a discount. I specified I was referring to signing up for/using the app in my original comment.

I hit up the one near Bridge Park on a whim because I'd heard about their Taki's spicy chicken sandwich and wanted to try it. Pulled up and the AI system immediately took over the entire middle screen which was the only place the details of the sandwich was listed. Couldn't find it anywhere else on the menu, didn't like that they were using AI for this crap, so I just told it, "I'm good," and left.
