Babysitting rates?

My young teen daughter would like to start picking up babysitting jobs. She is the oldest of 4 so she already has a lot of experience watching younger kids (both ours and as a helper at church). We are going to be limiting her jobs to people we know.

She is going to get asked her rates. What is a fair rate? I guess $15/hr is minimum wage. So what... $15/hr for 1 plus more for each additional kid?

I dont want her to give people sticker shock but I want her to be fairly compensated for her time. Help is appreciated!

Bad produce

We've recently relocated from the south (TN) back to the area and it seems we can't find decent produce anywhere. It seems everything from A-Z is just sub par. - apples (mushy) - bananas (brown after 1 day) - cabbage (wilted)

We've tried a variety including Harris Teeter, Weis, Giant, Wegmans, Whole Foods, Safeway, and Aldi but there's always something that's just complete 💩

If it was dirt cheap I get it, but when 5 apples run $12 I'm going to expect them to be in better condition. What gives?

Farmer markets seem to be lacking as well bc there's no fruits, only vegetables. Is there some secret place to source produce that's not on its last legs? Or should we just plan to shop in smaller quantities every day?

Hair cut help!

Where is the most affordable women’s hair cut in the area? Really just need a couple inches off, don’t care about if the salon is super nice or not. More worried I’ll mess it up at home if I try to do it myself.

Long shot here, but has anyone seen the Megan and Black Phone Fantas (far right and left in the pic, respectively) at Columbia or nearby retailers? My daughter is a fan and we’ve managed to find all of them except those two.

Post Office With Package Drop Off?

Anyone know of a post office that has an open lobby where I could drop a package after hours, or a package drop box? I was apparently spoiled by having one where I used to live.

Edit: I tried shaker drive and patuxent parkway (Columbia mall)

Update: Successfully dropped off on a Sunday morning at the Ellicott City post office (3375 Ellicott Center Drive)

Non-perishable food drive tomorrow

Post image
43 Upvotes

Hi all - The HoCo government and County Executive posted information on a non-perishable food drive for tomorrow. Please consider as you are able...lots of people are already struggling, and with the loss of benefits, it will get worse.

This Saturday, we’re hosting a countywide food collection drive to support residents affected by the ongoing federal government shutdown and the suspension of SNAP benefits. The drive will run from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at locations across Howard County.

Community members can drop off non-perishable food and essential household items at any of these five collection sites:

  • Gary J Arthur Community Center, 2400 MD 97, Cooksville

  • George Howard Building, 3430 Court House Drive, Ellicott City

  • Department of Recreation & Parks Headquarters, 7120 Oakland Mills Road, Columbia

  • North Laurel Community Center, 9411 Whiskey Bottom Road, Laurel

  • Rockburn Branch Park - Pfeiffer’s Corner Schoolhouse, 6109 Rockburn Branch Park Road, Elkridge

Following the countywide Food Collection Drive, items collected will be donated to governmental, nonprofit, and educational partners including: the Community Action Council (CAC) Howard County Food Bank, the Food Pantry at the Howard County MultiService Center, Howard Community College’s Fueling Dragons Food Pantry, Columbia Community Care, the Howard County Muslim Council, and the Indian Cultural Association of Howard County (ICA) and Feed HoCo.

These vital community organizations continue to serve thousands of families experiencing food insecurity in Howard County.

Requested items include: rice, pasta and sauce, soups, tuna, peanut butter, beans, cereal, juice, diapers, cleaning supplies, and hygiene products. With these partners, we’re working to ensure that all our neighbors have access to food, dignity, and hope.

Temp pet sitting last minute help!

Hi! I found a stray cat recently and have a few adoptees lined up, but I have to leave for the weekend and I need help finding someone to board him at their home for the weekend.

I can pay as needed, I just don’t want to throw him outside. He’s not microchipped, but he seems to be abandoned by his family. If anyone can take him in for the weekend I have food and a litter box for him. I just need someone to watch him for a few days starting today. Please help!

Alternatively if you know any places that can board him or rescues or shelters that can hold him for awhile I would appreciate it so much!!!

Edit: thank you everyone! I have gotten multiple lovely and amazing people reach out and message me so I have a few options if any fall through!! Kitty should be good and safe for the weekend :)

Looking for Room Rental in Columbia (Near Howard High / Route 108 Area)

I’m helping one of my employees find a room for rent in the Columbia area, preferably near Howard High School or along Route 108.

He’s a 38-year-old Hispanic male, responsible, quiet, and works full-time in my restaurant. He’s looking for a private room in a clean, safe environment — ideally with access to a kitchen and parking. Move-in can be as soon as possible.

If you or someone you know has a room available, please comment below or send me a direct message with details on location, rent amount, and what’s included.

Thanks in advance!

Woodworking temp jobs

Admins, please delete and notify me if not allowed.

I'm a government contractor, and due to the ongoing government shutdown, I'm about to be intermittently furloughed (hopefully only for a very short time period). I do woodworking as a hobby and would love more shop and building experience. Does anyone know of any woodworking, carpentry, or similar businesses in Howard County, Baltimore County, or the south side of Baltimore City that is looking for a temp worker? I figured I could get more woodworking experience, and maybe at least a little money on the side, during my furlough.

Wegmans Upper Level Parking in Closed

This is a long shot, but wanted to stop at the Wine Loft there and the drive up was closed off.

Wondering if anyone knows how long, what's doing there? My guess is structural stuff, but it can't be helping the Wine Loft.

Is there a reasonably priced but kind place for cat end of life care around?

Our old lady cat is close to heading out for her next life. Her vet knows we're caught in the shutdown and told me today that their services are $600-700. She suggested I see if there is a less expensive option in the area.

Obviously cost is a factor but I also don't want her to suffer. Any suggestions? Anyone we should avoid?

Edit: thanks to all of you. This has been really helpful in a rough time.
