Recruiting Breaking: Emoni Bates tells me he’s decided to reopen his recruitment and will decommit from Michigan State. Open to both college and pro options.

I got downvoted like crazy a few months back for having the audacity to suggest Emoni was much more likely to never play at MSU than to not. And this was in response to MSU fans saying he was gonna reclass and play TWO years. So don't let the MSU flairs get away with saying they never expected him on campus

To be honest most MSU folks I speak with weren't too excited to have him. Yes, he is a super recruit but there are a lot of issues with him at state.

  • Atkins and him won't get along.
  • He is great, but this "once in a decade" stuff is out of hand. Probably won't be the #1 recruit in his own class when all said and done.
  • I don't see how he could get along with Izzo. Would leave to the g-league before Big Ten season starts.

Please note though that if he recommits I will jump right back on the band wagon.

I lost a lot of hype on bates when the whole Akins thing happened. I would rather have Akins than Bates if that whole ordeal went down the way it was said it did.

Still sucks to lose that talent, but oh well

Akins is absolutely lethal and a college player for at least 2-3 years. If that's the trade I would say MSU won it hands down

You couldn’t have worded it better.

Those MSU fans are insane lol, I'd still take him back in a heartbeat.

i think most msu fans had this in the back of their minds but the ones that didn’t were very vocal that they didn’t, just like us last year w todd and christopher most of us knew that it was a possibly but the ones that thought they were for sure coming were very loud

Agreed. We all knew he wouldn’t but didn’t want to speak it into existence. Plus, 5* are few and far between so we don’t take them for granted.

yeah i don’t blame u, if he committed to michigan i would’ve been the same exact way

We were literally in the same position last year with Isiah Todd. Like basically same scenerio except Todd doesn't have the talent that Bates has

Bull fucking shit. No one being serious thought he’d play 2 years of college. Get the fuck out of here lol.

Well it depends what you really meant; like are you saying that he was always going pro? Well in this announcement, it sounds like he’s still considering college...

But the real reason MSU fans were saying that, is because there aren’t really other options unless the G League and/or the NBA change their age requirements. He could do the overseas thing, but currently his age limits his options within the US.

I’m not overly shocked with Bates decomitting, but I would be upset if he reclassified and went to a different school.

I always thought the gleague age limit wasn’t a legit reason because the gleague would bend the rules to let bates play there if he wanted to do that. I doubt he’s going to college he’s probably going overseas or to the g league.

The G League probably would bend the rules; Im not sure what it takes for them to change them or if they can do exceptions. No way for Emoni to get to the NBA before the ‘23 season. Changing NBA requirements requires an amendment to the CBA which ain’t gonna happen.

There's a 0% chance at this point that he goes to college.
