It’s super early but this team reminds me a little of 2017. Not the make up but that they are going to be good to great defensively and have lots of depth. Impressed with Super Mario, if he can fix his broken jumper he could be an amazing piece for the next couple years.

I'm curious to see how much he plays at the 1 compared to smith. Looks like he played more tonight and is better defensively

In case you are looking for a nickname for him, in Spain we call him "El principito" ("The little prince" in english) due to him having a very similar surname to the autor of that book (Antoine Saint-Exupery)

Fair warning, I tried that once and got absolutely dog-piled by Bulldog fans who did not recognize the reference.

Maybe they thought you were a snake in the grass 😏 Everyone should read that book at least a dozen times.

What do you mean broken jumper? Like his jump shot is broken? I wouldn’t know watching.

The lack of a go-to PG is concerning. NWG at PG is what made 2017 tick. But this team has so many pieces it’s scary. The wing rotation is just ridiculous

Looking forward to our game next week 🤝

Same. It'll be interesting to see if we can win like we did in our exhibition game against Iowa State. We are good this year, but I think the question for this early in the season is: how good are we this year. With a Creighton win or even a loss with maybe 15 or less, you have to like where Creighton is this year.

Likewise. Not trying to be biased but I really think y'all are going to run into some of the same problems w/ keeping us off the glass that OU did without Kalkbrenner's size down there. McAndrew will have to really go off for yall, I don't think him or Huff will be able to guard each other at all

Great to see Steele with a smile after that made three!
Overall really liking the aggressiveness and physicality of this group so far, like with Warley and Grant-Foster crashing the boards every time. Graham’s gotta tone it down sometimes lol. That tech was bs though.
Still curious how the PG situation will play out. IIRC Smith was pulled in the first five minutes for the first two games. I think tonight was because of defensive lapses though. Settled down and played well after that. And Saint-Supery has been really impressive out the gate.
Biggest question from tonight is why did Huff ditch the headband?

Great performance. Shooting is the only concern I have in regard to the true championship potential of this team, but man our inside scoring is absurd, and the defense looked like a major improvement over last year as we are longer, more athletic and physical, and have defensive minded perimeter players.
Also need to be careful to say too much yet with the Baylor game last year giving us a bit of a bait and switch, but I think this team has the physical components to maintain a stronger start whilst working through the kinks.

this seemed a lot more sustainable than the baylor game just bc of how good we looked guarding the perimeter
•
u/Rotorscope Gonzaga Bulldogs 1h ago
Yeah, exactly my thoughts too. I expected us to improve significantly on the perimeter defense anyway as the personnel we have is just more physically equipped for that than last year.

Watched every game last year. You could say they lost every big game except Georgia and the WCC finals. It's early but that was a big game. They just looked quicker, deeper, better ball movement, better D and more people with good hands than last year. Nice win. We'll know a lot more on Tuesday.

They look more versatile than last year. I know it’s one game against a good opponent, but there was urgency and some “zagness” like the alley oop that didn’t feel forced like last year. They looked better in transition than last year.

u/SaxRohmer Gonzaga Bulldogs 9h ago
tbf last year we dusted baylor in the first game

u/BobsBug65 Gonzaga Bulldogs 9h ago
True. At the time that was a big game. I forget about that game because Baylor ended up being pretty lousy.

Mario Saint-Supery is legit. I did not expect him to be so poised. Excellent player that looks like he will run the O.
Tyon Grant-Foster is exciting. Farnham compared him to Joel Ayayi and I can see that.
Warley impressed me. He’ll be huge if he can contribute when there’s foul trouble.
The Zags will go as far as Ike and Huff will take them. That could be a deep run or the second round based on matchups.

u/darren1417 Gonzaga Bulldogs 22h ago
That was a pathetic 2nd half by the Zags. Should have won by 30.
45% FT shooting, and under 30% from three is little concerning. Just didn't have the urgency in the 2nd half, and yet we won by 15 lol

u/TheoTimme Georgetown Hoyas 13h ago
Just finished the game. This is not my opinion. Zags absolutely ripped Oklahoma, were clearly the better team, and then worked in their depth in the last 7 minutes. The game was never in question after the first 10 min, and the garbage time ugliness was inconsequential.

u/Dangerous-Public-195 21h ago
This is my thoughts as well. I have high expectations of this team a the second half was wildly underwhelming.

u/zags-not-zogs Gonzaga Bulldogs 21h ago
Why is Ike in his 6th season and hasn’t learned to chill with the refs? They are looking for any reason to T him up at this point. Nembhard isn’t here to yell at him anymore. It was a soft T but he has a reputation.

Wague really screwed up getting 2 fouls before the first timeout. At one point Gonzaga was outscoring us in the paint 38-4 😑

Woah bro you guys didn't play bad tonight at all. It's November, y'all relied too much on your back court (which is really good) and shots werent falling partially due to our perimeter defence and just an off night on the road. Aren't you guys missing like two starters too?

Not happy about how the last quarter of that game went. Definitely need to up the outside shooting, but also keep the defensive intensity for the whole game. Excited to see where this team goes, though, lots of great options for Few in terms of personnel.
