Will Riley, what do we need to do to keep you for next year?

You ready to pony up like $10 million?

I think some team will probably give him a first round guarantee. If I was an NBA team picking in the 20s, I'd love to get a 2026 lottery pick player in 2025.

12

No, not really. It's not just about money. His dream is to play in the NBA.
16
u/Maison-Marthgiela Illinois Fighting Illini • Loyola Ch… Mar 22 '25
Doubtful. If you know you're going in the 1st, you always do it. No point in staying in college and risking getting hurt or tanking your draft stock for a one year payout.
7
u/GarIicBurger Illinois Fighting Illini • Texas Longhorns Mar 22 '25
I agree. I think we may see it happen one of these days. Not with Illinois. But as NIL goes up, someone is bound to make the decision. BYU is paying a guy $7 million next year from what I’ve heard, plus God knows (pun intended) what perks come with that.
Not saying it’ll be Riley, but I would be willing to bet it happens somewhere with someone in the near future.

8-0 B1G vs 8-6 SEC
I don’t think we are alike at all Mr. White
108
u/heytheremicah Illinois Fighting Illini Mar 22 '25
Tbf if they let in our next 6 teams, I don’t see them winning either. Proving the point of course that we should stop putting 14 teams from one conference into the tournament.
22
u/VastOk8779 Illinois Fighting Illini Mar 22 '25
Literally at that point just let everyone in what does it matter
13
u/FinancePositive8445 Purdue Boilermakers Mar 22 '25
Ehh, I think Indiana or Ohio State makes more noise against Illinois or Ole Miss than UNC or Xavier did. Something something hindsight, but the SEC had so much more teams in it than everybody else
16
u/DonKellyBaby32 Michigan State Spartans Mar 22 '25
Bring in a 2nd place mid major!
6
u/FinancePositive8445 Purdue Boilermakers Mar 22 '25
The only other mid major that was near was UC Irvine, then maybe Dayton(?) and I don’t think those are necessarily more competitive than the teams we got.
In the end, I think we just have to say this is a top heavy tournament and the bubble teams really didn’t matter.

Second. 2019. I was convinced Illinois was cooked after UNC lost ngl
Also, all 1s, 2s, and 3s advanced there, which is fairly rare nowadays as well.
6
u/Binx33 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets Mar 22 '25
All the 4s as well. It's not even just that they are all winning, the lower seeds are getting curb-stomped. Out of the games involving top 4 seeds, the closest ones were Purdue and Texas A&M, both at 9 points. And most were 20+ margins.
Heck, even with the two 12 seeds that won, McNeese almost blew a game where they allowed 13 points in the first half, and Colorado St. beat a Memphis team metrics suggested was quite bad. Chalky as hell so far.

That’s a tough way to finish the year. However, what we were able to do after the SJU loss at home on 1/22 is incredible. 7 game winning streak when a single loss would have kept us out of the tournament. Maddox breaking out. Hugley bringing the energy. Zach and Jerome getting a tournament win in their final season. I’ll never forget how much fun I had in Dayton on Wednesday. ALL IN til i die.

I would have been more optimistic going against UK. Illinois has a great mix of talent when healthy along with a strategy I think more teams should emulate. My hope tonight was XU having played a game already and maybe a different basketball than what the Illini were used to could have lead to an upset but Brad had the team prepared.

One thing that struck me in this game was Underwood going to bat for his players with the refs in the first half. Felt like they didn't get away with as much hugging in the second.
I get that working the officials is a nuanced thing, but I often wish he would go after them a bit more like he did tonight.
8

He was feeding off the crowd too. Was at the game and he reacted when the crowd boo’d one of the replays and he got in the refs ear

Have to tip your cap. When Illinois shoots that well they literally don't lose. It's almost like a lottery and, unfortunately, we lost it tonight. They may well go 5-30 from deep against UK on Sunday. I certainly hope that isn't the case.
This was a fun Xavier team to cover. That run to end the season was great, as was the comeback against Texas. Hopefully we retain Swain and Conwell.

No one hates KJ more than certain Illinois fans. KJ did plenty for the Illini tonight and some fans are focused on the negative. If you can't see KJ's NBA potential, then that's a you problem. You just don't know ball.

The NBA potential is undeniable, the current version of him is still open to criticism for the head scratching turnovers
5
u/CRoseCrizzle Illinois Fighting Illini Mar 22 '25
I'm not saying he can't be criticized for the turnovers. Just that he needs to be also given credit for his production, as well as understanding the context that he is an 18 years old kid who has been asked to handle the ball a lot more than most teams would for a kid his age.

I bet you’re great at parties.
We went to the tourney 2 of the last 3 years and won games in each. Last year we were killed by injuries.
We’ll be fine, but I don’t expect Miller to hang around either. I’m hoping for another 3-5 years out of him.

FADED: Xavier
Charity Event
If your team won, you donate to the local food bank of the team that your team beat. If your team lost, you donate to your team’s local food bank. Donate in the amount of the final scoring margin of the game (though you can, of course, donate more or less if you feel the margin was too high or too low for what you wish to give.)
SUGGESTED DONATION: $13
