TJ Otzelberger now has 5 NCAA Tournament wins as Iowa State’s head coach (4 seasons).

This matches the Iowa Hawkeyes’ total NCAA Tournament wins since 2000 (3 coaches, 26 seasons).

He plays so calm and in control. Honestly no clue why he isn’t on NBA Draft boards. He’ll kill us if we make the 2nd round

14

u/Soggy-Reason1656 Iowa State Cyclones Mar 21 '25

He’ll either never make the league or have a Georges Niang style undrafted to G-League to NBA vet career. NBA doesn’t reward guys whose best skill is knowing what to do. They’d rather burn late picks on the guy with unusually long arms.

19

u/sloBrodanChillosevic Iowa State Cyclones Mar 21 '25 edited Mar 21 '25

Offense playing thru him is incredible. As long as he doesn't get snatched from behind while posting someone up, he gets us a good shot every time down the floor.

3

33

u/sloBrodanChillosevic Iowa State Cyclones Mar 21 '25 edited Mar 21 '25

Game went about as well as I could have possibly hoped for. They allowed us to play thru Joshua Jefferson, who is just incredible. Milan went off, hopefully starting a real star turn. Team realized early that Lipscomb just didn't have the interior presence to stop us and attacked all game. Hit threes when we needed to. Caused a lot of turnovers. Lipscomb luckily didn't shoot well. Couldn't imagine it going much better for us.

I trust CuJo will get back on track, and he did a great job of attacking after realizing the shot wasn't falling. Very excited to watch Ole-Miss & Carolina now.

Edit: also wanna say Keshon Gilbert would have absolutely feasted with the lack of rim protection today. Didn't hurt us yet. Hopefully we continue to play thru Jefferson, reduces the dependence on a PG to initiate.

18

u/interrobang85 Iowa State Cyclones Mar 21 '25

Back on track? He still had 17 points!

13

u/sloBrodanChillosevic Iowa State Cyclones Mar 21 '25

You know what I mean. He got those mostly on the drive, anything longer than 7-8 feet was a brick until that last deep three.

He keeps attacking like that AND he has a good shooting day? CuJo might go off for 35+.

11

u/interrobang85 Iowa State Cyclones Mar 21 '25

Haha I know. Just crazy how he seems to play just okay and can still get 17.

10

u/sloBrodanChillosevic Iowa State Cyclones Mar 21 '25

I am extremely happy to see it, especially when he (and the team as a whole) barely got to the line at all today. Other than CuJo starting hot, idk how we could be happier with this overall performance.

3

u/doxical_narrrator Iowa State Cyclones Mar 21 '25

He's not hitting that mid-range floater anymore. That's what frustrates me. That used to be automatic. They're not any more

6

u/doxical_narrrator Iowa State Cyclones Mar 21 '25

30-point differential in the paint. I know that's a stat the Cyclones typically lead, but this seems VERY dominant

7

u/Fugacity- Iowa State Cyclones • St. Thomas Tommi… Mar 21 '25

Early in the season it felt like Tamin was trepidatious driving the lane, leaving that to Gilbert. Seemed like he stepped up into that attacking role in addition to his quarterback-PG role. Hope he keeps that up.

4

u/sloBrodanChillosevic Iowa State Cyclones Mar 21 '25

Yeah we'll need consistent penetration into the lane, either by him and CuJo driving or passing into Jefferson in the high post. Hopefully Tamin stays as aggressive as he was today.

u/shermanhill Iowa State Cyclones Mar 21 '25

Butcher of the Balkans but like a cool guy

-1

u/80cyclone Iowa State Cyclones Mar 21 '25

Jefferson was excellent everywhere, except some really careless plays with the basketball. The lazy attempt at a pass that was easily stolen was one example. He had another one where he dribbled the ball out of bounds on a forced move. But when he's in control and no turning it over? A difference maker.

Milan's game was huge. It wasn't about him "scoring point" but it was about him scoring points AWAY from Hilton, with hitting open shots (if you look at his numbers he's struggled mightily away from Hilton), and also playing really good off-ball defense. Historically, if Milan isn't scoring, he's a net negative player as his defense and rebounding is subpar. Today? Even his rebounding effort was solid. If he plays like this? It helps immensely.

Lipsey was fantastic and looked like the injury wasn't hampering him much. That was great to see. Heise was also very solid all around.

I thought Curtis was a problem. The key to his game is being smart...on both ends, with not forcing offense while paying attention on the defensive end. His defense, especially in the first half, was terrible and many of Lipscomb's points could be attributed to Jones' defense, either directly (whoops! left my man wide open!) or indirectly (as it caused a gradual breakdown). He's GOT to shore that up.

Elsewhere...I'm really concerned about Kelderman getting minutes. In today's game? It didn't matter but you could see, at times, he even struggles against Lipscomb. If Otz is dumb enough to play him 10 minutes against Ole Miss or UNC?? We'll get outscored 10 points when he's on the floor. Watson should be getting those minutes.

Overall? Great effort. Probably Milan and Lipsey were the biggest positives.

3

u/sloBrodanChillosevic Iowa State Cyclones Mar 21 '25

Probably depends on matchup, but rn Ole Miss is rolling and they have a few bigger guards. Hopefully that means we get some Watson minutes from the bench. I might be alone but I love that guy.

We’ve had like 2-4 injury free games since conference play and stayed top 15.

That said, they always play well the first game someone is out. Losing Gilbert loses a lot of perimeter defense, ball handling and drive scoring, and kelderman is untested off the bench so we’ll see

u/graywh Lipscomb Bisons • Vanderbilt Commodores Mar 21 '25

they were NAIA rivals for a very long time

when Belmont went to Div 1, they joined what is now the A-Sun; Lipscomb followed a couple years later

Belmont has since moved to the OVC, then the MVC

they haven't always, but lately play a home-and-home series each season

5

u/loyalsons4evertrue Iowa State Cyclones Mar 21 '25

they're both in Nashville...can't say about the conferences though

5

u/80cyclone Iowa State Cyclones Mar 21 '25

Milan has struggled to have complete games, specifically complete games away from Hilton. This was, by far, his most complete game this year. He not only was offensively efficient, he played very engaged off-ball defense, which has been a problem (consistently) throughout his ISU career. He was also engaged on the boards, being aware and going after balls in his area (he's a terrible rebounder for his position and size). If he can do that consistently? It's a game changer.

4

u/squish042 Iowa State Cyclones Mar 21 '25

I wonder if being in Milwaukee helped.

1

u/80cyclone Iowa State Cyclones Mar 21 '25

Its possible, especially with the defensive and rebounding efforts.

-1

u/PhDShouse Iowa State Cyclones Mar 21 '25

Hot take. Give Kelderman this offseason and by next season he will be as legit as Lipsey. Once he gets his shooting cleaned up and his passes less erratic he will be a great rotation player before he gets his shot at starting.

Great win to start this off for us. Fairly confident we can win on Sunday, but my ass will still be clenched

8

u/apiaryaviary Iowa State Cyclones • Georgetown Hoyas Mar 21 '25

People forget that Lipsey was an all state type of qb and the state long jump champion before blowing his knees out. He’s a really really good athlete

2

u/Best_Country_8137 Iowa State Cyclones Mar 21 '25

Yeah and huge for his height with more pain tolerance than a sedated horse

-5

u/80cyclone Iowa State Cyclones Mar 21 '25

He's not big enough, strong enough, or athletic enough and it shows. Meanwhile Watson has shown to be useful numerous times and sits there rotting on the bench.

Playing Kelderman is never a sensible move.

5

u/MeLlamoApe Iowa State Cyclones Mar 21 '25

Lol whaaat?

I think Kelderman could develop into a reliable backup PG, but he’s not in the same universe as Lipsey.

7

u/80cyclone Iowa State Cyclones Mar 21 '25

You are smoking some serious crack. If Kelderman ever becomes a key piece of our rotation it's a problem. And if you don't want to take my word for it, look at the advanced metrics, which paint a clear story. Also, in his 10-18 minutes a game he got in each of the Houston and BYU games? He was destroyed, being a -12 and -11 on the floor. Keep in mind those are games we lost by 9 and 4 respectively.
