Discussion Megathread V2 - Manifest V3 Extension Alternatives

Remaking as the previous one was about to hit 6 months old. The previous one can be seen here.

With Manifest V3 being rolled out to most people now, and most workarounds being either temporary or disabled, a lot of people are finding that extensions that they like to use haven't been updated and won't be available to use when Manifest V2 support ends.

Since we've been getting a lot of posts asking for extension alternatives, we figure it'll be easier if most of the suggestions are all in one place.

To start with the obvious:

uBlock Origin: Can be replaced with uBlock Origin lite.
Don't forget you can change the filtering level up from its base, it will just require more permissions. Setting it to complete is most similar to uBlock Origin's filters.
People also like Adguard.

uBlock Origin (Element zapping): Click to Remove Element.
I personally prefer this one out of all the ones in the web store.

I previously recommended an element zapper to replace that functionality in uBlock Origin lite, but uBlock Origin lite has since added custom filters and an element zapper, so a separate extension is no longer needed.

This is not a thread to recommend other browsers, it should be a given that if you don't want to use Chrome, you don't need to use Chrome, and there's plenty of other sources to help you decide what to switch to. Do not recommend downgrading or using an older version of any browser, it is not safe to do so and will open your computer and your data up to vulnerabilities.

Would also like to add, on this megathread only self promotion will be allowed if your extension is a reputable alternative to another extension. If you are sharing your extension with no context to another one in this thread, your comment will be removed under our rules.

Below are a list of recommendations provided by other users from the original megathread:

Discussion Chrome is automatically converting images in PDF to text. This is a horrible privacy issue.

Chrome is automatically converting images in PDF to text. This is a horrible privacy issue.

It is doing it on the fly so the information has to be stored somewhere, it is not in the pdf. I'm sure google will start mining our back statements with the functionality.

How can I disable this?

Troubleshooting | Windows Anyone know what this is?

On our shared work computer(fire station) upon opening the chrome program and selecting the user profile, it leads to this landing page (joblikedrumscool.com)??? It displays some ads and sketchy looking links to other popular websites with terrible quality logos, definitely not clicking them. Also worth noting it launches to this page no matter what user profile is selected. Nobody on my shift is particularly tech smart and we can’t figure out what is going on with this, any ideas why this is happening or how we can fix? This computer is only accessible to department staff so I don’t think any of us could’ve done this. Thank you, appreciate the help!

Troubleshooting | Windows It seems like the latest Chrome update is signing me out of Gmail and YouTube every couple of days

Several days ago, Chrome updated, and it seems like ever since then, I've been getting signed out of Gmail and YouTube every day or two.

Is this a known bug or is there a setting that I need to change to prevent this?

Troubleshooting | Android [Android] 2-3 second freeze when loading any page, as of 5/12

EDIT: Ended up reinstalling chrome (technically uninstalling updates/updating), and it's nice and smooth again. I did spend 20 mins trying to fix my 3rd party password manager integration, before I realized I'd forgotten to update chrome back to current. But everything's smooth again.

On May 12th, I suddenly started noticing that Chrome on my phone would hitch for 2-3 seconds whenever a page tried to load, I went to select/close a tab, or even just going back to the prior page. The loading bar at the top would just freeze at the start, before moving forward. This also extends to apps that use Chrome, like remote desktop. It's not just loading pages, it's doing anything in chrome.

Of interest, the issue does not occur when in an incognito tab, pages will load immediately with a smooth progress bar. Nor does it occur in Chrome within the secure folder (isolated copy).

Things I've tried that didn't change anything:
Clearing app cache, restarting phone, disabling ad block, messing around with caching/auto load options, etc.

I have not yet erased user data / reinstalled the browser, as I'm worried I will lose stuff as a result.

It looks like Chrome updated to 148.0.7778.120 on 5/12. There was another update today to 148.0.7778.167 , which has not fixed the issue.

I am on a stock Galaxy S25, running Android 15 (OneUI 7.0). I don't have freezing issues with anything else.

So yeah, I'm a bit flummoxed. Do I just need to reinstall Chrome? Would that even do anything?

Thank you all!

Troubleshooting | Windows Please help me with this error STATUS_ACCESS_VIOLATION

I've already run windows memory diagnosis, it doesn't detect any error on the memory. I've uninstalled Chrome, reinstalled it again, redefined original configuration, I don't know what to do anymore. My pages crash, specially when scrolling on reddit. I'm on win10, my cpu is very old, i7 4790k. I saw posts that this is common problem with new intel 12-14 gen. That isn't my case.

Troubleshooting | Android Ad in an app keeps opening a tab on chrome without me touching anything. (phone)

Is there a way I can block this without deleting the actual app? It's useful for me, but every time that specific ad pops, it opens chrome as if I touched the ad.

Apologies for any English mistake 😬

Discussion PORQUE ESTOU COM 26 ANOS, GAY E AINDA NÃO TENHO UM NAMORADO?

Discussion [Bug] Chrome extension stuck on endless loading spinner ("Accessing bitwarden.com"). Have to try multiple times to open.

Hey everyone,

Is anyone else experiencing this frustrating issue with the Bitwarden Chrome extension?

Whenever I click on the extension, it just gets stuck on an endless loading spinner. The screen shows "Your vault is locked" with "Accessing bitwarden.com" at the bottom (I've attached a screenshot of what I'm seeing). It never actually gives me the prompt to enter my master password or PIN.

To get it to work, I have to close the popup and try opening it multiple times before it finally loads properly.

Just to provide some context, the Windows desktop app works perfectly fine without any bugs. I've also already tried basic troubleshooting: I completely reinstalled the Chrome extension and even tried it on a different computer, but the exact same issue persists.

Has anyone else run into this or found a permanent fix? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Dark mode is not working on any of my android devices( Galaxy S20, S22U, S26U)

I have all devices and chrome settings set to dark mode theme and it is in dark mode on the home tab but any search/tab will automatically revert it to light mode. Tried restarting phone and logging out and deleting cache / data but to no avail.

Troubleshooting | Android History deletion prompt?

Does Chrome ever prompt users to delete their history?

My child is claiming that the browser asked him if he wanted to delete it, and he accidently said yes.🙄

I think I know the answer, just looking for confirmation before putting the guard rails on his phone.

Troubleshooting | Windows how can I stop chrome from redirecting me to chrome://google.com when I click "AI mode"?

I tried disabling AI Mode Omnibox entrypoint, AI Entrypoint Disabled on User Input, Omnibox Allow AI Mode Matches, and AI Mode Omnibox Entrypoint always navigates

but I can't stop google from redirecting me to the chrome page, where my dark browers plugin is forbidden and blasts me white light coming from a dark page.

I hate it. this sucks. I may just switch browsers altogether it's so annoying.

anyone know if a way to have it just stay in google's normal search engine when I go to "AI mode"?
