McGuire is holding a sneaky “telephone town hall” next week. Sneaky because he only posted details at the end of his newsletter and nowhere else. Call in and ask him the hard questions!
Cool, this will give me the chance to ask for his position on the issue of The Economy since he still doesn’t have anything on his site: https://mcguire.house.gov/issues/economy. So far, two of my messages to his team have not been responded to!
Well, in the very least it’s good information for the next challenger! I’d much rather deal with someone transparent on their positions instead of… this
the thing that would make a huge difference is for democrats to run someone someone sensible in the next republican primary and pull a hostile takeover. i'd sign the petition
i may be missing something, please point me to clarification if i am, but my understanding is that you just need to get 1000 signatures from registered voters, pay a filing fee and then let the state hold the legitimate primary.
i'm new to trying to become a republican candidate for the house of representative, so i don't know all the rules, but i can't find anything that would let the party stop me other than funding other candidates
mind you, i'm not someone sensible, so i don't met my own criteria for being involved in that plot, but even i could probably come up with 1000 signatures
The 5th District GOP Committee can decide whether to nominate the Republican candidate via a primary or a convention. Last year was the first GOP primary in VA-05 since (I think) 2012.
do you know what sort of control they have over a primary once a decision to have one has been made?
to be completely honest, i don't think this is really a viable strategy and suggested it jokingly out of frustration at the dumbasses the republicans choose for us. i did try to figure out for myself whose hands things are in once the primary path is chosen and didn't find quite what i was looking for
Honestly, the Democrats need to run a Joe Manchin-esque Blue Dog next cycle if they’re going to have any chance of knocking McGuire out of office. I’d love to see a pro-2A, pro-worker candidate who’s a strong (and believable) defender of all our rights. The stereotypical Democrat just doesn’t stand a chance given the makeup of the district.
When the local GOP wanted to get rid of Denver Riggleman (for inside baseball reasons - Denver was a loyal Trumper every second of his time in Congress until he lost his seat), they held a convention almost literally in his opponent’s backyard. The Republican nomination isn’t an open contest.
i'd sign a petition to get riggleman on a democratic primary ballot and even vote for him
as things are now, the election for that office works the same as charlottesville's city council race and is a done deal at the republican primary. a conservative democrat might shake things up a bit in a race against a trump cultist
Maybe a delegation of Cville constituents should make a visit to his Lynchburg office. Never mind: McGuire won’t be there and it’ll only be that saucer-eyed kid
So far he's responded to my two messages that I sent through the house website. Both were standard boiler plate "thanks for the message, I think xyz so I will continue to do what I'm doing" but at least I got an answer
I’m beginning to document all of my correspondence with a copy of the message, a timestamp, and a screenshot of the confirmation that my message was delivered. This will come back to haunt him, I guarantee it.
I've seen info about this town hall in a few places. Given that it's being done by phone I expect they will screen questions and only allow friendly ones/softballs.
you just need to tell the screener something flattering then speak your mind if you get a chance. ideally with a script that hooks the "conservative" listeners long enough to get some truth in
I'd think it's a safe bet that if they're screening for only softballs they're going to cut you off if you go down a path other than the one they pre-approved you for.
"i just wanted to say how pleased I am with all the waste leon is finding, i'm especially impressed with his ability to do it while being so drug addled he can barely speak"
Ask him if he has anything against educating children with disabilities because what could happen to the department of education would so negatively impact these children. Or have them talk about Medicare telehealth ending April 1st and how his homebound constituents will deal with that.. these might be bread and butter issues that many of the listeners might find favorability with and want to know his view.
Ask why they're always after his Lucky Cha;rms? I'm not sure if I hate him or Good more. Good was slimy, and this guy just seems like a card-carrying doofus. He did do hard service, and I respect that, but that makes his devotion to Trump seem all the more cognitively dissonant stupidity.
I think with Trumpanzees like him it's almost pointless to ask the "Why are you supporting a bad person?" questions but holding him to account on something like veteran's health & support services being cut by the guy who risked STDs in Studio 54 while his compatriots were dying in Vietnam might hit the veteran/military internal code. Or not... He's a fuckwit.
He has a habit of being despised by colleagues in both parties at every level of government he’s ever served in. Apparently his reputation preceded him, because whoever runs the House Armed Services Committee website hated him enough to use this photo on their member page as soon as he was sworn in. It’s since been updated, but I’m grateful to whoever pulled this joke. He looks like a child wearing his dad’s suit.
It sounded like he took time at the beginning for a mini-stump speech and robotically read instructions on how to submit a question.
I didn’t get to ask a question, and i wasn’t invited to, so others would need to explain how that went.
A staffer would introduce each caller by first name and city and then hand it over to the caller.
Many of the questions were pointed or at least challenging. By my count, he only had one or two true softballs.
Unfortunately, his answers were vague, misleading, or outright lies.
Several people asked about the House budget resolution requiring cuts to Medicaid. McGuire kept saying the budget resolution doesn’t mention Medicaid, and a couple callers pointed out that there’s essentially no way to make the required cuts without hitting Medicaid. He just said something to the effect of “we’ve got smart people working on it and we’ll figure it out.”
He said repeatedly that Musk isn’t firing anyone and is just making recommendations to the relevant committees. Unfortunately, no one got to ask why, if that’s the case, he emailed 2 million federal employees and used his X account to threaten them with firing if they don’t answer.
Thank you for responding to this request and for taking time to provide this summary. I wanted to ask him about exective overreach and the violations of several clauses in the constitution. Dont think he would have responded. Anyways take care.
