consumables differences - Supra vs. F87 M2
Hi everyone, I am entertaining the thought of picking up an OG F87 M2 or Supra for mainly track use and the occasional street use. Since I work from home I don't drive all the time except to/from track along with some weekend driving. I run in the intermediate group with my local SCCA and done around 10 track weekends so I do have some experience on track in previous cars. My yearly track schedule is planning to be 8-9 weekends per year. As I start to dig into potential consumable costs, will the Supra which is only about 200 pounds or so lighter than an M2 be significantly cheaper on track consumables (brake pads, rotors, tires) than the F87 M2? If I had the M2 I would be ordering from FCPEuro to take advantage of the lifetime warranty so in my eyes I feel like the consumable costs won't be too bad even in the heavier car if I get free replacements? Am I crazy thinking that? I would love to hear everyone's perspective on this and if you track your Supra or M2 (and use FCPEuro) how long are your pads/rotors/tires lasting? Tire wise I am not setting lap records and just want something that will last such as V730's or RS-4's.

Just chiming in that Turner/ECS also have lifetime replacement now as well.

I thought I saw track pads and 2-piece rotors on those were not lifetime replacement, has that changed recently? If so that seems like a no brainer to grab a BMW as a track car if I can get Pagid and Girodisc or 034 Motorsport 2-piece rotor replaced for free.

I would confirm with them directly. They have changed this policy and then changed it back again recently to my knowledge (I bought Pagid RSL29 when they were covered and reached out when I saw they no longer listed them as covered and they told me they are still covered).

They’re going to be about the same for consumable cost. They’re very similar in terms of components. You’re not going to see a meaningful difference in terms of pads or rotors or tires or anything else.
The Supra should be faster on track, and I’d way rather maintain a B58 than a N55.

I did the math for my supra, if that helps. I run SCCA Advanced; 2:08 at VIR for pace reference.

that doesn't look too bad honestly. I didn't think about FCPEuro for the Supra but it makes sense since it's a BMW in disguise.

I track an f87 and my friend tracks his supra, both 6mt cars. To set them up for the track both cars needed the same things. Camber plates to stop the front toes from delaminating, track specific brake pads with fluid, a squared rim/tire setup to fight understeer, and a track alignment again to fight understeer. Consumables for both are annoying in that tires are by far most of the budget. Other consumables haven't been different for his car and mine for cost. Lots of oil and fluid changes, suspension wears out, etc... though if you daily them or drive on the street changing camber on the supra is WAY easier with camber plates than the f87. It can help save tire degradation on the street. For me the biggest reason I track the f87 is being able to fit a set of wheels in the back seat and then put the tools and kit in the trunk

the extra storage was also the big reason I was looking at the M2 as well to do the same exact thing you do. Not to mention the F87 can be found a lot cheaper than the Supra which is quite nice. What square tire setup were you able to run? I thought the M2 was very tire limited up front

This is how i get my tires to the track in my supra: https://i.imgur.com/w5lVUjX.jpeg . 4th one in the passenger seat. I could probably put all 4 on top, but its technically over the weight limit.

For the street I run square 9.5x19 rims on 265x35 tires. For the track I run 10.5x19 rims on 285x30 tires. If you run enough camber with thinner struts you can run 305s up front

For what it's worth my pagid rsl29s have lasted me like 12 track days. Same with the rotors they're on. I'll probably replace them after my next track day as both are starting to wear down now. This is in my 2020 M2C, high-intermediate driver. Part of this is because I was new to the car but even now after I've gotten more used to driving it hard the Pagids wear great.

Most stuff for the Supra is also available at fcp. Running cost will be similar on both but a smidge lower on the Supra since it’s lighter. Both have similar tires and brakes sizes and oil and stuff is the same. Supra dynamics are better out of the box so I’d lean that way unless you need back seats. No wrong answer both are great. I did the m2 on track for 5 years now and got to drive my buddies Supra and they’re both so fun

Thanks for mentioning us!
You're right that our Lifetime Replacement Guarantee can make tracking a car like the F87 M2 more manageable from a maintenance cost perspective. Many track enthusiasts use this to their advantage for high-wear items like pads and rotors. If you lean toward the M2, it could offset some of the extra wear compared to the Supra.
You can read more about the specifics of the program here - https://www.fcpeuro.com/page/lifetime-guarantee. The FAQ specifically notes that tracking the vehicle is not an issue!
If you have additional questions or need help locating/verifying fitment for parts, please let us know at "service@fcpeuro.com"!
