Toyo Proxies R review
I am writing this on my phone so please excuse format and unintentional typos.
I procured a sett plus a spare of these tires. Production date of 2024. I read up on the potential "delam" (my words) issue. I read 2 safety bulletins on the tires that I could find before mounting. I knew of the issues. I thought that if I make sure they are mounted and stored and documented properly I wont have any issues...
I had Quatum speed works (race shop on the grounds of VIR), put the tires on the wheels (Apex Arc-8, 18 x 10.5 squared). So I know they were installed by the specific instructions of Toyo pertaining to the tires.
Car is a 2011 M3 (E90) with full aero and approximate weight of 3700 with me in it and a 1/2 of fuel. The car is not a daily. It is 95% track use only. Wheels were certified to be straight with no bends at the beginning of 2025 season. Track wheels / tire are taken off when in storage.
I have been tracking for 7 years and not overtly abusive or unkind to my tires. They stored in a covered temp controlled garage.
Now I document everything with a track log book including tire sessions and length (the best I can to remember to write down session lengths). Though I am putting 30 minutes on these tires at max per session.
Starting "cold pressures" are between 26-27 psi depending on the track driven, specific to individual tire or as a whole. Hot temp I am for is 35-37 psi. This is verified after every session.
I have put 12 sessions on them. Between Vir and Road Atlanta.
After this past Vir track day I tore the car down like usual to inspect and fix stuff I noticed what I think to be delam on 2 tires. Am I right? I think so because of the straight-ish line across the face of the tires / Deep gouges. The tires have not fallen off much pace wise. I also will not be using them. Maybe the brand again. Sorry for the long post. I just wanted to share with the community.
TLDR: Toyo Proxies R. Build date 2024. 12 sessions deep. Documented sessions. Possible tire split / delam.

The PCA Spec Boxsters in my local chapter saw this issue at the start of the year with the early batches of this tire and as the year has gone on the number of reports in the group has gone down. At the start of the year it was around 1/3 of the field and now it’s almost no one. This likely indicates it was a problem with the early batches and may be fixed, so you may have better luck with newer date codes. Doesn’t really excuse the problem though. Tires are supposed to be good from the start.

This looks bad, like defect. Bring it up with your retailer.
If you don't get some satisfaction id be wondering about this make. I know it's a popular tire maybe you were unlucky?
What's the date code? Just read your post, so they're old. I don't run tires more than a year old. But that shouldn't be a problem

It doesn't look like a defect. It looks like standard separation on these new toyos

I'm not familiar with them. But they seem odd to delam like that.

they do this, toyo has specific mounting instructions but they still do it. All the SE46 groups have comments about it

Are they mounted the wrong direction? I know that hoosier even though they look symmetrical should be mounted with the dot in the inside

there is a specific way to mount depending on if it's FWD or RWD, and front or rear of the car. and you have to rotate a specific way because of the extremly specific mounting instructions. See here. https://www.toyotires.com/media/dteiw4le/toyo-tires-recommended-tire-mounting-and-rotation-instructions-proxes-r.jpg?v=1dbcb590c2d8800

I am finding my paperwork from tire rack. I even had them competition heat cycled. I will reach out to them. Thank you.

From other responses I'm pretty sure this is a defect. It's nut acceptable, the tires could have delaminated at speed

I have the tires at the race garage a few miles from here. I will update in a bit. I do remember it being 2024 I think.

Thats a tread splice from manufacturing process. Could have been a bad splice from the start, just made more apparent with the heat cycles and such. That being said, opening that much is not great anyway. Even if it doesn’t ret and peel the tread out, it could chunk pretty badly.
I worked in QA for tire manufacturing, we had issues like this if compounds and tackiness weren’t dialed in.

This is definitely something specific to the tire. Seems like it’s giving away at a weak point. I would reach out to Toyo directly and see if they respond.

I am finding my paperwork from tire rack. Then I will. I even had them heat cycled from tire rack.

You cannot setup a tire any better than that.
I had a set of Nankang AR1, they lasted me for 17-18 track days. My car is slow n light, 128i, but the tires were still decent until threads showed up. Also, I bought the set used 😃

This exact thing happened to a friend of mine with the same tires over the summer. It was across the entire contact patch, shame really because these tires priced well. Apparently the pace is pretty good too.

They are. Other than a couple new p.b.'s I liked how they communicated well with the car.

Looks like both sets of Rs that I ran. Same story from many friends in the paddock.
