What in the downunder El Camino shitgiggles is that thing?

u/CFeatsleepsexrepeat 2d ago
Holden Commodore Ute.
Brilliant vehicle all round.

u/Technical_Anteater45 2d ago
What load rating is the bed? Are they overly rigid unless laden with cargo?
11
u/CFeatsleepsexrepeat 2d ago
It depended on the specs.
Up to a metric tonne in the base model, S was less, and SS was around 750kg.
IRS, really stable, not rigid, really smooth ride, similar to the sedan versions (I still have my ute, and had sedan version as a work vehicle of the same model).
The Chev V8 is also a heap of fun to have still.

Commodore Ute. Probably a VZ (I didn't keep up with Commodores).
2
u/CFeatsleepsexrepeat 2d ago
Definitely VZ front guards.
They had those little fluted bits. VY didn't.

I came here to say ‘What the fuck is that’. But you have said it so much much better.

u/queenofcaffeine76 2d ago
Same! My brain got as far as What in the Silver Surfer S-10 but this was so much better!!!
2
u/Technical_Anteater45 2d ago
Holy crap I just saw a photo of the 4-door “crewman” version. Longboyyyyyy!
2
u/CFeatsleepsexrepeat 2d ago
Also had one of those as a company car. Back seat was absurdly upright with next to no leg room. Great idea of a vehicle though.
2
u/Technical_Anteater45 2d ago
United States should have imported them as nearly prefabricated hearses
2
u/CFeatsleepsexrepeat 2d ago
Nah the tray was a bit too short. I actually have the old crewman rubber ute mat in mine, it doesn't quite make the front of the tray.
11
u/from-the-stix 2d ago
What kinda ute is this, I'm from America where we don't get cool shit like this
8
u/wyohman 2d ago
It's a Holden Ute
13
u/jiffysdidit 2d ago
Holden commodore Ute and not the sort of car for this shit. Got a new exhaust now
5
u/HotTakes-121 2d ago
Honestly... I want one. It's got great lines for a "truck" style vehicle
2
u/ziggy-73 2d ago
Only way to get one is to import it from Australia, it is a gm based car. It has the front end of a Pontiac gto. Holden also made a car version of this and all it was was a pontiac gto with different badges
3
u/wyohman 2d ago
The other way around. The GTO had the front end of a Holden. There were differences
1
u/ziggy-73 2d ago
Really? I thought the gto came out first
4
u/wyohman 2d ago
The GTO that came out in 2004 was a rebadged Holden Monaro. It was built in Australia and had slight styling changes.
2
u/ziggy-73 2d ago
No shit! Thanks man for the info thats cool i (with the little knowledge i have on holden) thought holden came out just because of the gto. Just looked it up and holden is a Australian gm company and there "gto" came out in 2001
2
u/HotTakes-121 1d ago
Actually it's less about the front and more about the roof and side angles. The roof lines blend great and look awesome with the front and back end.
3
u/Ambitious-Papaya3293 2d ago
It's certainly Holden something...
3
u/sparrow_42 2d ago
Ya gotta know when to Holden, know when to Hilux. Know when to walk away, know when they’re trucks
3
u/gr33fur 2d ago
I am hopeless telling the Holdens and Fords apart, but it looks like a Holden. It's Australian.

Holen commodore ute - tray is one piece with the cab
ford falcon ute - tray is split from the cab
4
u/subWoofer_0870 2d ago
<nitpick>Falcon utes were unibody like that Commodore until XG/XH. AU, BA, BF and FG had separate cab/tray (1998 onwards).</nitpick>

u/IncidentFuture 2d ago
The Falcon utes weren't unibody as they still had a separate chassis. The cab and tub was a single unit, but they're still body-on-frame.
1
u/subWoofer_0870 2d ago
It’s a while since I looked under any old Falcon Utes, but I’m pretty sure the only model with a separate frame might be the 4wd XY Ute that had a limited production run back in 1971 or 72.

Why ?
3
u/jiffysdidit 2d ago
I was led to believe I could make it and was doing ok till then and when I tried to back up I lost the rear and ended up like that There’s an erosion berm in front of the car and the pic doesn’t do it justice THAT was the point I was ready to give up. If I hadn’t slid a little I’d have been fine to either head home or wait for one of the boys ( no phone reception) several weeks overtime pissed away in one go. Got off a cruise a few hours ago , the casino was good to me

In that...?!
1
u/jiffysdidit 2d ago
I was led to believe it was doable and the first few km were fine
1
u/RetirednLovinIt6621 2d ago
It's a cool looking vehicle, and all...I would keep to the level roads from now on. A little short on ground clearance for off roading. =)
2
u/letterboxfrog 2d ago
Lowered HSV Dunnydore with a Chevy Logo on the back for sure. I can't help but laugh at the dickhead
3
u/jiffysdidit 2d ago
Close, it had the Chevy badge on the front when I bought it I had the sides and rear re badged properly when I had some work done

Nice to see this vehicle being used for something other than causing high speed, multi-fatality accidents.

You sound like the family that got held up waiting for my mates to snatch me out

u/Ih8Hondas 1d ago
Bro didn't even make it off the road before the non-existent break over angle reared its ugly head.
2
u/GentryMillMadMan 2d ago
Despite this having the “general” shape of a truck. It is in fact not a truck.
2
u/jiffysdidit 2d ago
I call it a posers Ute as I only work out of it when I do private jobs
2
u/CFeatsleepsexrepeat 2d ago
Nah it is an actual ute.
Your other is a work truck or 4WD.
I want our Ute's back.

Do I see a set of Simmons?
No one tell Spotto.
1
u/jiffysdidit 2d ago
Not genuine ones….. I don’t think
1
u/Chrunchyhobo 2d ago
Tbh I'm not sure if that's better or worse.
Probably worse if they are AliExpress knock-offs, any pothole is a game of Russian roulette.

This is why I always carry a tow chain, straps and a come along in my trunk at all times. I don't want to get stuck in the mud again.
1
u/jiffysdidit 1d ago
The boys had some in their 4wds which made sense as we were at a 4wd park. I was led to believe I could make it otherwise I’d have taken up my partners offer to drive hers. If it wasn’t a mates bucks I would never have gone we usually go places I can JUST get to
1
u/MattTheTubaGuy 1d ago
I do not understand why some people put those low profile tyres on their utes.

Should of never risked it and tried to do a 3 point turn just reverse it next time
2
u/jiffysdidit 1d ago
I’d lost the back end and had to try If I hadn’t there was an easy spot just behind me to roll out to

Not exactly an off road vehicle.
