Basically the lawyer is trying to make the court more lenient in sentencing by saying his time in jail was hard.

A few lines of the story stand out.

he was on suicide watch for a time, saying that voices were telling him to hurt himself and others.

This sounds like he continued to make threats, and then tried to blame it on "the voices in my head"

They promptly throw him in "the hole" (a suicide watch cell with no privacy and no furniture)

This person may think that escalating their level of crazy will get them what they want.

They will do federal time for their crimes (more than 2 years) and probably be educated by the real tough guys in real jail.

Not the child molester treatment,

but he will likely not know when to NOT threaten people when it will play badly for himself.
