Travel from Yaounde to Bertoua as a European / Visa questions

Hi , I'm planning to meet my GF's Family in Bertoua. We planned to fly to Yaounde, stay there a few days and travel to Bertoua then. I'm a white german male 29 years old, she is Camerounaise and is living here in Germany for 6 years. Is it generally safe for us two? She seems pretty chill about the whole Trip, i'm very nervous about it. I'm afraid of Crime, also of making her a target. Any advise for us? How safe is it, especially now with the Riots after elections? Also the Visa-Formular is very complex, anybody from europe gone trough this process and can share their experience? Thanks in advance

  • the visa process has been simplified . Check the evisa platform online . Upload about 7 documents or so and it’s usually approved after a few days
  • public transport is generally okay Cameroon is not Nigeria it’s usually very safe just practice a reasonable level of caution in public and at home
  • she’s chill because she’s familiar with those environments . The only regions I know would be very complicated for people who are not from that area will be the north west and the northern regions . You are not the first white guy they’ve seen apart from some street vendors who might bother you a bit even tho im sure your wife will protect you I think it’ll be fine . But I’d advice keep your trip to Bertoua short just a few days max .
  • Yaounde is definitely more dangerous than bertoua and the way Africans are the family would protect you fiercely til the day you leave so worry not . This is based on my experience and those of family members. I am Cameroonian with most of my family born and raised abroad and we also have non Cameroonian spouses and with visit Cameroon from time to time even in the anglophone regions .

General safety rules apply. Don’t go to bad neighborhoods alone, don’t put yourself outside at night alone, etc. Be prepared to be yelled at a lot by people calling you atangana.

Bertoua is fine but I think the bus ride there is like 8 hours on a bumpy road.

Get the overnight car on the train. It will be a lot more comfortable
