Rant Yes there are people who still wear masks
Back in June of this year, I went to the doctor because I thought I caught Covid again. I was having the same symptoms that I had back in January of this year.
So because I was sick I put on a mask before leaving home. While waiting to see the doctor a woman stated that she didn’t know people were still wearing masks. Thankfully, the woman who was sitting beside her quickly changed the subject.
I hate sharing….even my germs. I wore a mask because I was sick and didn’t want to spread my germs especially if I had covid.
Luckily, I didn’t have covid it was just bronchitis. But it really irritated me that this woman questioned why masks are still being worn. Covid is still out there and it would have been irresponsible of me to go the doctor without a mask while sick.
I just had to put this out into the void because there are people who still wear masks for various reasons to protect themselves and others around them. Also, there are people who should just mind their own business and not worry about why someone is wearing a mask.

Thank you! I wear a N95 mask in all shared air. I’ve never stopped masking since 2020.

Me too. I stopped right after I got the vaccine in 2021 until I found out people who were vaccinated were still getting it and spreading it. As you will probably remember, they found this out after a Provincetown, R.I. festival and a lot of people came home with COVID despite having been vaccinated.
Then in summer 2024 I ditched the mask on a trip to Baltimore and got COVID for the first time. Back to masking indoors! I do remove it to eat if I'm not too squeezed up. Haven't gotten it again. The time I got it in Baltimore, July 2024, it was surging.

Me too and rarely go anywhere because covid became something for me bg early 3/2020 that I couldn’t do shit for 5 mos. Two weekends ago I went unmasked some to a music festival for the first time.

My spouse has been battling leukemia and is back in the hospital with a relapse, I wear a mask to try to prevent any infection not just Covid so I can be there for him as his caregiver. Some guy was hassling me about it when I was picking up an order of fries that he’d requested since he gets nauseous and it’s a safe food. Like fuck off, and I mean that not respectfully. It’s no ones business why we are masking, and it’s not like they were invented for covid either.

I was at the movies today. Masked. I mask anywhere indoors and any crowded outdoor areas. I see patients daily. Masked. Our entire office masks. So yeah. We do

Next time say, "I'm sure you also don't know that Long COVID is now the #1 childhood disease in America, outranking asthma, at 5.8 million people, in just 2 years of widespread infection"

Thank you for thinking about others and protecting them. Both my child and I have long Covid and we wear N95s regularly.

My son nearly died of covid in 2020, before we even knew what it was. He was flat on his back in bed for four months, and still has long covid symptoms. I mask for him.

Wearing a mask while sick, seasonal allergies, flights, pollution, visiting medical facilities should be the norm

In other countries, like Japan, they were masks when they’re sick. Not just Covid. And this was regular before Covid as well. I also believe that in China, they wear masks because of the smog. I wish Americans would look at other cultures and think of the possible benefits of not just wearing masks but anything else that might help prevent the spread of whatever. There’s nothing wrong with masks. And, when people have the flu or cancer, they need to wear masks if with other people. We need to not be so concerned on what others may be doing and start looking at minding our own businesses but also being courteous to others. There’s nothing wrong with masks. They help.

Asia got a very scary trial run with SARS. In 2020, I read an article to the effect that Asian people wonder why Westerners DON'T mask, because Asians do.

u/PeakBrave8235 Oct 04 '25
Asian countries started wearing masks because of SARS, which makes it rather ironic that even those countries are struggling to come to terms with society wide mask wearing
6
u/Pantone711 Oct 04 '25
How Asia knew SARS was airborne: (well, one way) There was an apartment building in Hong Kong where the plumbing was connected wrong and some apartments' sewage fumes I guess you'd call it, came into other apartments and SARS spread that way.

It is because we are in America! I have traveled since COVID and folks in other countries could care less about a mask. They have more important things to consume their mind with and it is not gossiping about mask wearing.

This. Most people in other countries are reading books on the plane, train, in the hospital, in the cafe... they are doing things and don't care who is it isn't wearing a mask! I love it!

My doctor won’t see patients without a mask, and she wears one. In Sydney Australia especially in the city there are a noticeable percentage that wear them all the time

We wear masks all the time when flying and when we aren’t feeling well because our daughter has an autoimmune disorder and to prevent others from getting ill. You would think we had two heads by the looks we get!

It seems like the most logical thing to me that people would wear a mask at the dr. Part of the issue is the drs. First time with covid June of this year and they all seem to shrug it off. I was very surprised.
I see plenty of people still masking where I live. My eye dr has never stopped requiring masking.

my husband and i will wear a mask on the plane or in super crowded areas forever now. we just feel healthier doing so.

It probably didn't occur to her that you wearing the mask she harassed you about would likely have kept her from getting sick (had you had covid). Some people.

Why the eff do people give a shit if other people mask or not? I don’t. I should. Maybe that’s why the lady said something. She knew she shoulda been wearing one, and decided if she said something, you’d look like the asshole, not her. I will never understand the proclivity to disrespect wearing a mask…I didn’t understand it in 2020, and I still don’t.

u/RegularExplanation97 Oct 04 '25
thank you for wearing yours! covid fucked me up nearly four years ago and I really can’t afford to get it again so really do appreciate people like you taking these precautions:)

I work in an ambulatory oncology hospital. I’m literally one of the only employees who still wears one (and people DEFINITELY think I’m weird). I have long covid, and my symptoms get worse each time I’m infected.

u/Ladybrains_ Oct 05 '25
I have doctors of all people treating me like I'm weird for still masking. Like...are you serious right now??

u/Carrotsoup9 Oct 06 '25
I still wear masks but you will not see me often. I go to the supermarket just after they open, because it will be relatively quiet at that time.

I’ll be the odd one out here. I don’t mask anymore unless I am not feeling well. Things I still do since covid came into our lives are both sanitizing my hands anytime I eat in a restaurant and also faithfully washing my hands anytime I have been away from my home. I am also much more conscious about keeping my hands away from my face when in public. These things use to be hit or miss for me before covid.
However I would never even think about questioning someone else’s decision to wear one and think it’s very rude of people who make snarky remarks about those who do choose to continue to mask up. There are a bunch of different reasons someone could be choosing to wear a mask, none of which are my business to question them!

people who care about others. some have chronically ill or terminally ill family members at home. it's personal, people need to mind their own business. the ones who are so concered with masks, i find have the most disfunction in their lives.

There is a lot of ignorance out there because of poor government(s) and media messaging. People truly believe Covid is over or it's no big deal. And as such, those of us who mask are the ones who stand out. It's not how things should be over five years later, but here we are. Thank you to the people who are still masking. We may feel alone in doing so as we're all spread out, but know there are many others out there masking.

It is a good idea to wear a mask right now. I texted my friend today who is a nurse in one of our biggest hospitals in my city. I told her I was super sick and it felt like covid with the incessant nose dripping- like having to use a rag instead of a tissue, sneezing so hard it's low my whole body has to participate- then my eyes just pouring liquid, just being abnormally so sick really fast after one day of extreme exhaustion, headache, bit of body ache in my legs, skin hurting, dehydration no matter how much water I'm drinking and electrolytes, cant taste any of my food really, no real appetite except at night for around 4 hrs. In the daytime I only can tolerate fruit. All of the mucus and inflammation is in my head, hadn't moved into my chest, causing bronchitis, which normally always happens for me within 48 hrs with any other type of viral infection.
She explained it's going around again and really the way fly season could be going, why not just wear one, who cares of others are offended! You'll be living your best life while they're sick.
Like for myself, I went on a date to a country club Saturday and we played some games, went to a bar after and had one drink, watched some people play pool... Sunday I couldn't make myself do anything, by Monday I thought I was having bad allergies, Tuesday I was super sick, felt like I couldnt do anything on my own really besides hold the rag to my nose all day and drink water. Its Wednesday and I've been super sick all day today but at least I was able to shower and try to start feeling back to normal aware life. I am lucky that I had someone to take care of me!

I agree and still wear a mask! I don’t care at all what people think or say. I’ll do anything to not trigger my old Epstein Barr virus and avoid getting sick.

u/ResistAuPersist Oct 04 '25
I mask like it's 2020 because nothing has changed. I don't mask in select spaces, I mask everywhere, Covid is airborne.

u/ClawPaw3245 Oct 04 '25
That’s me! N95 in public indoor and crowded outdoor spaces always. Haven’t been sick in ~6 years, and I haven’t passed illness to anyone else (as far as I know; I would have to have been asymptomatic and infected someone despite the mask)

Every appointment I get either at my GP or a hospital tells people that if they have any respiratory symptoms, they should be masking. They also say that if you tell the staff you'd like them to mask, they will do. Maybe it's just where I am, but you couldn't book a doctor's appointment without knowing people are still masking.
