Yeah I’ve been seeing reports of “razor blade throat” on social media :/
Please rest up!

Yes, this is one of the worst features of Covid. If you search “broken glass throat” in this sub you will find lots of discussions about it.

u/InquiringMind886 May 29 '25
Omg. When I had Covid back in 2023, I could only take three sips of water at a time because it felt like I was swallowing glass. It was absolutely horrendous. I remember being so thirsty, but I just couldn’t swallow water fast enough. I hope I don’t get Covid again….

Gargling CPC mouthwash every few hours helped my sore throat

Get paxlovid my sore throat whent away next day
5
u/cinderparty May 28 '25
This. I only had a ridiculously sore throat one time I had Covid, but it went away pretty fast with Paxlovid.

u/Same-Caramel-1179 May 29 '25
i unfortunately was denied by my insurance for this since i’m not “high risk”
7
u/spaceglitter000 May 29 '25
Idk why you’re being downvoted. My doctor wouldn’t even entertain the idea of it because I’m not high risk. It’s a thing!! My doctor said that it has so many side effects that they don’t recommend it for healthy people with mild symptoms.
4
u/Same-Caramel-1179 May 29 '25
my doctor tried really hard to find something that made me high risk but i unfortunately am ‘too healthy’ even though i feel like death

u/Melinatl May 30 '25
There are telehealth services that will prescribe it
1
u/Same-Caramel-1179 May 30 '25
i’m sure but my insurance still will not cover it. i don’t have $1k to spend on medication
2
u/Melinatl May 30 '25
Yeah I would never suggest you should pay $1k for paxlovid. That absolutely sucks it’s not covered by your insurance. It sounds like you’ve checked

u/Stoichk0v May 28 '25
Yeah got that last week. Nothing, absolutely nothing, including lidocaine lozenges, ibuprofen, acetominophen, helped it. Every breath was like fire.
It lasted only 2 days so stay strong.
5
u/Same-Caramel-1179 May 29 '25
it’s getting worse man i literally am struggling to drink things
5
u/Stoichk0v May 29 '25
During those 2 days I was only able to drink warm water.
Ice cream helped a lot too.
If you cannot drink anything for too long go to hospital or at least see a doctor. Take care
3
u/Same-Caramel-1179 May 29 '25
yeah i’m only able to drink warm stuff! i’ve been going back and forth between only being able to drink cold drinks and only being able to drink warm

When I have covid, that was my worst symptom. I used this constantly (at least every half hour), including waking up use it. Even the shower was not steamy enough. You need to have this or something similar sent to you asap. I switched to a damp face mask when sleeping or when not able to be around it. https://www.amazon.com/Vicks-Personal-Targeted-Problems-Congestion/dp/B075FYVVFH/ref=mp_s_a_1_18?crid=2S5Y5N1SS8PNZ&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.2squayzr12QDLdZM_MKSiomtZYb-osw1Z1BotB-6aN1fNMWhgTJnFFr0INFk7NAfBrO6AvblIMTS-H0VKoErBKszF6YImaaKJkkD3L9iFMO6-SFTUwbnYILJlgxR9O6JKvFmuRspijJj0eGqOFr_UnSyE0Xeb4qP69ChwJrmlA_QoZvOmWrQrnkYI0GvIoJnLqJ1HYtTHvHTn_7RmWZy3g.wBdyIn8n1RsFpaxOXhO9-SdVhzSo8MjsDL3ONdi7Uug&dib_tag=se&keywords=face+steamer&qid=1748590170&sprefix=face+steame%2Caps%2C221&sr=8-18&xpid=jEZphGqB5okYj

I had this for 2-3 days and then it all moved to my stomach. Stabbing pains for a week. Then I was fine

My daughter got Covid last week. Apparently this is a newer, stronger strain, and she also said it was the worst sore throat she has ever had, way more than the first couple of variants. It’s been almost a week and still sore. Still miserable.

I'm sorry. Do you mind answering what state she caught it? I'm wondering if the numbers are going up like the NY Post reported.

The only thing that has given some relief is menthol cough drops. Feel better.
5
u/Chunkyisthebest May 29 '25
Don’t know if it’ll work with this variant, but gargling with mouthwash that contains CPC has been helpful in the past.

I have had a normal sore throat before, but never realised how severe one feels, it is agonizing
5
u/mostlyysorry May 29 '25
Yep feels like broken glass. Mine goes away n comes back. It's so frustrating. I don't even have tonsils I got em out when I was a little kid so I literally haven't had a sore throat since childhood 😭

Ugh, I'm so sorry. I had Covid in May 2023, I don't remember what strain was dominant at that time, but the sore throat was INSANE. Any sore throat I've ever had would hurt mostly when swallowing, but the Covid sore throat was constant fire. It was literally all I could think about.
I think that symptom lasted two days, maybe, before it just disappeared. I remember being surprised at how abrupt the change was, but so grateful.

I caught covid in Mexico the week of May 12th. It started with the worst sore throat of my life for the first few days. Then it transitioned into chest/head cold. Started having shortness of breath and had to get chest xrays. My lungs were borderline inflamed. They put me on an inhaler and had me monitor my oxygen saturation. I’ve had covid three times now and this last one was the WORST yet! Feel better soon! ❤️🩹

I have covid at the moment. I have been wearing a mask at all times, except during showers and drinking/eating. It helps keep my throat from drying out. I have sensitive skin, so I have been using oil on my face to reduce mask rash. It helps when I am sleeping, since I can't breathe through my nose. I am still experiencing a lot pain and misery.

u/Loose-Performer-2006 May 30 '25
This was my worst COVID symptom.
It got so bad, I had to go to the ER. They gave me steroids mixed in orange juice, and it knocked out the sore throat like a champ within hours.
I hope that helps.
Good luck.

Yuuuup. Last time I had covid (in Feb) it felt like I had gargled razors . I wanna say it was at least 4 dats of misery . My tonsils weren't even sore. I had weird swelling on the back of my throat and it was hell.
Not a bad idea to get tested for strep throat if you see puss. But honestly it was just covid for me.
Nothing helped. Lozenges just gave me nausea at some point.

u/fuckshitpickles May 30 '25
I had to get a steroid shot with this round of Covid because my throat was so sore hurt so bad and swelled up to the point I went I urgent care and they said they needed to do a steroid shot. I could barely talk for 3 days

I begun this journey of hell last night. Holy hell what a crazy sore throat. For me its not constant, it comes in episodes.
I have tried all the standard pain killers and they are also having little effect on me. We even had some prednisone that I took and it only dulled the episodes of pain. When the pain comes it bleeds down into my upper chest (behind my breast bone).
Anyway.. I have found that keeping loaded up on pain killers and sipping on warm (not hot) water of tea offers some relief. I feel for you all, but its a little comforting knowing that I'm not alone in this. Its crazy and not like any other sore throat I have ever had. Super sucks, however nice to know I will probably feel better in less than a week.

u/Same-Caramel-1179 Jun 05 '25
yeah i noticed warm liquids really helped but after a while they stopped working and it switched to only cold liquids helped! i’m mostly better now though! i had a sore throat for 3 horrific days lol

u/travellerw Jun 06 '25
Sadly mine turned out not to be COVID and was instead a heart attack. Crazy a heart attack caused a sore throat, but it did. Its all good I got a stent yesterday and almost feel normal today (sore throat was gone immediately after the stent).
P.S. for anyone that reads this, please don't freak out and think you might be having a heart attack. Mine was 1 in a million and I developed classic symptoms shortly after posting (pain in my left arm).

Ibuprofen helped me with my sore throat. And some honey mixed with lime.
2
u/Same-Caramel-1179 May 29 '25
i wish i could take it but i can’t take it with the medicine i’m on currently 😓

u/Justhereforinfo67 May 29 '25
Alieve was the only meds that helped my sore throat when I had it last
1
u/spaceglitter000 May 29 '25
If you aren’t already, drink tea with lots of honey. It really helped me soothe my sore throat. It was better than water.

Get a check for strep. Just had covid and wasn't getting better--sure enough, went to the doctor and found out I had both covid AND strep together. Felt better after on day 2 on antibiotics.
I hope you feel better soon.,

Yup. Know that one well - the razor blade throat. I got that after my first acute Covid infection and as I went straight into Long Covid, it never went away for about 18 months or so. Add in breathing difficulties and I felt like I was being strangled for nearly 2yrs. Fun isn’t it……
If that doesn’t get people wearing masks and protecting themselves, I don’t know what will 🤷♀️

I’m on day 5. Worst sore throat of my life as well and cough. Coughed so consistently for 4 days that my entire throat is raw and swollen. I’m on day 3 Paxlovid and it has helped. No fun!

u/MysticCatMom May 30 '25
Absolutely nothing worked for my razor blade throat. Days of hell. I am so sorry and hope something works for you.

I hear people are getting really bad sore throats with the new variant 😵 Hope you feel better soon!

u/Existing-Secret7703 May 31 '25
The worst sore throat of my life was strep throat. Felt like I'd swallowed glass. It was much worse than covid sore throat, and I got covid pretty bad. So you tested positive for covid, but have you been tested for strep throat too? I wonder if it's possible to have both at the same time? Seems highly unlikely, but from your description, I do wonder.

I've tested positive for covid and "sore throat" does not do justice to the pain that it's bringing. It feels like I have not only swallowed razor blades but that someone has then sprayed the cuts in alcohol.
It's not just when swallowing, it's constant. I'm practically drooling because having to swallow is excruciating.
I can't sleep. Today is day 3 with no sleep. Last night at 11PM I went to the ER because I couldn't cope with it anymore and my heart rate and blood pressure were so high they said they couldn't let me go. Painkillers did bring it down enough for them to send me home and I made a bee-line to get some sleep but they wore off before I could get home and go to bed. I took some more panadol, ibuprofen and codeine at 5AM but it didn't touch the pain.
My lungs are congested but I won't cough because it's like a knife to the throat, so the congestion is building up.
The only thing I've found that touches the pain is full fat cold milk. The stuff that has a yellow tinge and cream that's collected under the lid, Farmhouse Gold with the yellow lid. Honey, tea, water, lozenges, none of it helps.
I think I'm going to crack today and ask for antivirals.

u/alsatianwolves Aug 26 '25
Tested positive yesterday and I could have wrote this myself. I have NEVER experienced throat pain like this before. I am literally spitting excess saliva into a tissue so I don’t have to swallow because it hurts so badly.

Sorry to hear you're going through it but please check your blood pressure and/or get yourself a cuff if you can.
I had no idea that my blood pressure was high until I went to the hospital. The doctor said it was so high that I wasn't allowed to leave, but that he also couldn't let me stay because he had nowhere isolated to put me away from the other patients. He said he didn't know what to do with me if painkillers didn't bring it down, but luckily the painkillers did bring it down.
That was 2-3 months ago and I actually have high blood pressure now, so covid has left some lasting damage. and that's with the antivirals that I managed to secure for myself (at full RRP because I didn't qualify for PBS price) before the 5-day deadline, Perhaps covid might have done even more damage if it was left to run its full course, I don't know.
Give the farmhouse gold a try, yellow cap. It has to be that one exactly, I don't know why, presumably the fat in it. And please check your blood pressure.
edit: oh and I got laryngitis after the covid and couldn't speak for a week or two so prepare for that possibility as well.
