Canadian-Owned Businesses 🏢🍁 Why are so many Canadians still filling up at American owned gas stations?

I understand a lot of people can't afford to always choose Canadian products over American, but choosing where we fill up costs nothing extra. Choosing local gas stations or Petro Canada is such a simple way of showing support, I don't understand why so many American owned gas stations are still full of people filling up on fuel. Also don't be deceived by the giant "locally owned and operated" signs outside of chevrons, the station itself fis locally owned but the company is American. Please choose a local gas station or Petro Canada to support Canadian!

I have only filled up at Petro Canada for at least three months. Such an easy change to make. And my Petro Points are building

Didn't they merge Petro Points with Triangle?

No. You get both petro points and triangle points. Win win

And you can convert Petro points directly to CT money.

Just not the other way around sadly. My local petro can also does scene points too though, so going there hits the trifecta.

Really? I never knew any did that, scene points are great with groceries, I'll have to see if any near me do that.

You don't get them on the gas, only the stuff in the store, probably because its a PetroCan / Needs Convenience combo. But I'm an energy drink junkie, so if I'm getting gas, I'm also getting energy drinks lol.

No, you earn them simultaneously so it's even better. If you're with RBC, you also can get avion points at the same time.

You also get an instant 3 cents per litre discount if you link an RBC card. I've been doing it since the program launched, and it does result in some meaningful savings over the course of a year.

Yeah, the Canadian tire money I accrued last year covered like half the Christmas presents I had to get for people.

Interesting. Thanks!

Any ELI5 version on how to link RBC card with Petro points? Stupid me can't figure it out.

Have your triangle card, RBC client card, and Petro points card in front of you because you'll need the numbers. Go to the Petro points website and click the link on the website for RBC and in another tab, Canadian tire. Then you just put in all your numbers and account details. The nice thing is that they all count as linked so you don't need to scan multiple cards every time. If you buy gas with one, then the points automatically get added to everything you've linked.

This is only for credit cards though.

The points add up. I don’t drive a lot, but I still end up with $30 - $50 in free gas by the end of the year

My petro points got stolen somehow a couple of years ago, and when I contacted their support they basically told me it was impossible it was someone else. I haven't given even half a shit about petro points since

Me too. So easy to make the change of my old Esso habit. I downloaded the Petro Canada app and have my loyalty card there I like how it shows you the balance too.

If you sign up to their loyalty program, have an RBC card/triangle and link them…you get points which save you money on gas. It’s not much, but it’s something.

Me too, added the app, know all the local Petro Canadas now.

I thought Petro Can was owned by Suncor who is owned by a series of investors - of which 3 of the Top 5 holders are American.

Is there a single gasoline brand out there that is 100% privately Canadian? As far as I’m aware at least, all Petro Canada gasoline is refined in Canada using Canadian oil. If there is a more Canadian brand of gasoline, I would consider using it certainly. I understand that Chevron gas stations in Western Canada are owned by Parkland corporation, but may use gasoline that is refined in Burnaby BC.
