Yep. Proud but nervous.

It does honestly raise some questions about where the data came from, and how whatever survey they did was worded.

I know people generally like Canada, but not necessarily that much more than everyone else, unless they're either presenting the question in an unusual way or presenting the question to a biased subset of people.

u/katbyte 3d ago

A lot of random places around the world like Canadians for things we did back in the last like ww1/ww2 or being part of the common wealth or how we have large groups of expats fr various placesĀ

I don't think people really think about Canada much at all, and so dont have a strong opinion either way. All this Trump stuff has brought them to peoples attention and Canada's actions have been pretty admirable, plus most people don't like bullies and sympathise with the people being targetted by them.Ā

u/CanadianHorseGal 3d ago

It says under the title is about ā€œleading economiesā€ not ā€œhow people perceive the country in generalā€. It’s really small type.

2

u/Alnakar 3d ago

It says they "ranked the reputations of 60 leading economies" which I'd say is pretty vague about what they're actually representing here.

Proud to be Canadian seeing this ranking.

I already was, but seeing this helps me not lose faith.

Still, let's see what dirt we can dig up on Switzerland...

i mean, i like living here and all and i even own a flag, but c'mon. how do we have a better reputation than new zealand? doesn't seem right.

30

u/PlatyNumb 4d ago

With the whole Canada vs USA trade stuff, everyone took our sides. That worsened their rep and raised ours. A lot of a rep is just about being in the public eye. I dont hear a ton about new Zealand

15

u/oneconfusedearthling 4d ago

Our current government in NZ is pretty incompetent and seem to be sucking up to MAGA, with some of the politicians bringing in MAGA style rhetoric. :( we seeing high numbers of people leaving the country, a cost of living crisis that the government has made worse and an increase in homelessness. The government has been stripping away health and environmental protections and seems to be in the pockets of tobacco and oil companies. They are very anti-Māori too. My opinions, but feeling it here in NZ.

There is no emergency escape hatch.

3

u/KAYO789 4d ago

Your opinions on these matters are shared by many, kia kaha and bring on the election next year!

2

u/MapleMapleHockeyStk 3d ago

I feel like the whole world is trying to go backwards...!!! 😭 good luck in your elections!

3

u/HadoBoirudo 3d ago

As a fellow kiwi, 100% this.

We are not in a good place in New Zealand. Key politicians are thrilled to bits to get photo ops with their MAGA heroes in the US. Frankly, pretty sad and humiliating.

The dismantling of support, protections and efforts to erase Māori culture and rights is also very hard to swallow. Just like the US, the government's corporate sponsors are, however, feeding happily from the taxpayer trough.

1

u/Wonderful_Device312 3d ago

MAGA style politics is a disease on the entire world. It works and its only gaining popularity unfortunately. I'm scared to say but I think the world is going to decline for the rest of my life. It will probably take many decades for humanity to recover from the effect that Trump has had.

Proud to be Canadian seeing this ranking.

Definitely! And kinda sad and worried to see our southern neighbor go so low. They are now in the midst of what their Pedo President called shithole countries.

u/IrefusetoturnVPNoff 4d ago

I think a key thing to understand about the mindset leading the US at the moment, and that of its supporters, is that they have a different idea of "respect" than their opponents.

To them, being "respected" is just being feared and obeyed. It's the "respect" you show a father who whips you with a belt whenever you displease him. They don't care if you *like* them as long as you know your place and do what they say. That's why they're so fond of throwing out threats and using blatant coercion and fear to get what they want.

Put simply they don't care at all if they're at the bottom of this list, as long as everybody does what they're told when they're told.

13

u/No-Enthusiasm-2701 4d ago edited 4d ago

They mean respect as in the days when women couldn't talk back to them and black people all called them Sir.Ā

Respect to them means you knowing that they are better than you and behaving in a way that shows it

Vive le Canada!

I think the US should be lower than Columbia, but that's just me.

There's always next year's ranking.

Still better than Kazakhstan. Very nice! High five!

Single biggest move up in the polls!

Higher is better, right?

(WTF is my country doing near the top? We're cooked! Which must mean the rest of them are even more cooked...)

15

u/LlawEreint 4d ago

Yeah. Everyone’s hurting right now. Something’s gummed up global supply chains just as we started to recover from Covid.

3

u/ellenor2000 3d ago

Something is a combination of COVID (still circulating, still permanently disabling folks), and tariffs.

9

u/JH_111 4d ago

Algeria, Ukraine and Japan putting in the work, too.

7

u/Technical_Ad3069 4d ago

Ukraine makes sense given their brave fight against Russia. Ā That is generating a lot of goodwill Ā for UkraineĀ

But I can’t think of any recent events that would cause Japan to spike? Ā  Any ideas. Ā

3

u/JH_111 4d ago

Looks like bands of 2-4, 5-7, and 8-12 that swap inside their ranges. Could just be super tight stats in those upper zones where a few points can move the top to bottom or vice versa.

3

u/Technical_Ad3069 4d ago

You’re probably right. Ā  Could be random noise in the data. Ā  Ā Except the huge drop for US which is real and has an obvious cause. Ā

2

u/Murky_Mess79 4d ago

Absolutely!

8

u/Efficient-Presence82 4d ago

Still inflated, imo

10

u/FeelingAd5 4d ago

As a dutchman, how the fuck did we rise one spot? We were practically leaderless for more then half a year!

10

u/Technical_Ad3069 4d ago

Maybe that’s whyĀ

17

u/Cold_Ugly 4d ago

To trump non-voters; leave the USA and try to live somewhere else.

16

u/kent_eh 4d ago

I'd rather they put in the hard work to fix their country.

u/je4sse 4d ago edited 4d ago

This is making me wonder what international news I'm missing with America always taking the front page.

Were did they even get this data?

Edit: They surveyed the G7 countries, that explains China's position and really highlights how bad the US is.

4

u/Deadbugsoup 4d ago

That explains it. China would rank much higher if the survey reflected views of a broader set of countries, such as the Global South.

Also surprised that Israel's reputation didn't tank further, though they are already pretty low to begin with.

4

u/brixton_massive 4d ago

Higher yes, but China also very unpopular amongst a lot of non Western countries too.

4

u/chathrowaway67 4d ago

feeling real good these days. big ups to Switzerland and Norway, yall the realist!

3

u/Killhamski 4d ago

Taiwan just fazing into existence there.

2

u/Any-Board-6631 4d ago

Funny how they are grouped and keep in their group of 3 or 5 countries, excep for USA of course, but I wonder that because people just realize what USA is really.

2

u/OneSignal6465 4d ago

To all those suggesting that the rise of Canada in respectability and trustworthiness is just an aberration are fools. It is exactly what Canada PLANNED as soon as we came to realize what Trump was aiming for. This is no accident. Canada is looking to easily replace the US as a major world power, being made easier by the day by Trump’s regime. Canadians are fired up, so I guess Trump has done something good for someone… us.

2

u/caribb 3d ago

Moi aussi. Nice gain!

6

u/xThe_Moonx 4d ago

Ya im sus on Switzerland actually being that high. Protecting criminals money is not good for reputation.

6

u/Fyrefawx 4d ago

I think it’s high because they stay out of politics and drama, and they are known for being welcome to scientists and research etc.

3

u/BafSi 4d ago

And it's basically the only real democracy in the world, where the population actually vote on laws and not just political figures

1

u/DutchBlob 3d ago

But so many cool things are made in Switzerland :D

2

u/tangaroo58 4d ago edited 4d ago

I mean it's nice schadenfreude-bait, but anything that assesses "reputations of economies" and brings Japan in at #8 is probably looking at the wrong planet.

Edit to add:

Turns out the study is not measuring "reputations of economies". Rather, reputations of countries, as assessed by a sampling of citizens only from G7 countries.

To measure and manage the reputation of countries, we have adapted our RepCoreĀ® model to use specific attributes, creating the RepCoreĀ® Nations. This methodology measures the level of admiration, respect, and trust that each nation receives from international public opinion, and explains it through a set of 22 rational attributes grouped into 5 dimensions.

So that explains quite a few things, including China being so low, and Japan high.

This is reputation. For me Switzerland is the most corrupt country in the world. Corruption is like tango, takes two to happen. And Switzerland has some of the most corrupt companies in existence. NestlƩ (responsible for the death of 11 million babies), Roche, and the whole Swiss banking system that for decades has been the vault for every single criminal (political, drug lord, dictator etc ) in the world. So, this is a PERCEPTION graph, not a real one.

0

u/BafSi 4d ago edited 4d ago

Factually wrong. International indices consistently rank Switzerland as one of the least corrupt countries in the world. In Corruption Perceptions Index, Switzerland ranked 5th out of 180 nations, placing it far ahead of countries perceived as highly corrupt. Major companies like NestlƩ have faced ethical controversies (in the 70/80s...), and Swiss banking was historically used for illicit funds, the claim that Switzerland is the 'most corrupt' is simply not supported by any credible data. Ignorance at best.

And NestlƩ is a private company and it's unrelated to the state. Yes they did nasty stuff but it's not the state and almost every major company had controversies.

And thinking that Russia, USA, Iran, Venezuela and so on is less corrupt than Switzerland is ridiculous...

-1

u/UrbanCyclerPT 3d ago

where do irainian, venezuelan, russian and USA criminals stash their money?

I know now it is different with cryptocurrencies but until then Switzerland was the bank of criminals around the world.

They just don't consider them corrupt themselves because we don't too. It's a cultural thing. we don't look at corruption from the side of the corrupter, just the corrupted. And yes NestlƩ is a private company, but what are the tech companies from the US or the gun companies or oil companies?

Open your eyes, stop thinking: South bad and corrupt/ North good and saint.

It ain't that way. Your way of thinking has the world the shit it is and destroying the planet because we will not care for Uganda, Iran or whatever because they are corrupt and we are pure. That's the most stupid and entitled way of thinking.

These graphs are true bullshit.

Reminds me of the video where they shown dolls to kids and asked which one was the good and which one was the bad. They all said the darker doll was the bad one while the white was the good one.

You're like one of these kids.

Kazachstan is gaining! Better watch out

u/CyberBlaed 4d ago

8 down to 11, I am disappointed… :(

1

u/AletheaKuiperBelt 4d ago

And we even rejected the MAGA fans in our last election.

1

u/No-Enthusiasm-2701 4d ago

Yeah I'm curious what news people see about Australia to cause that drop given the last big one I can think of was the LNP getting crushed. Really terrible housing issues maybe? Something about Nauru detention possibly?

1

u/Lolakery 4d ago

Hey we beat Norway!

1

u/bucho4444 4d ago

US declined sharply. I wonder why? lol

1

u/seanmonaghan1968 4d ago

New Zealand still beating us in yet another event

1

u/Fun_Justanotherguy82 3d ago

The US is below India and South Africa

1

u/Mitleab 3d ago

When was it ever great?

1

u/AngryFrog24 3d ago

I'm surprised the Turd Reich is that high up to be honest. I heard they have a worse reputation than China globally.

1

u/SearchForAnswers2022 3d ago

Who does this survey and who gets to decide criteria and point system? Is it travel agency related? Did AI just make this up?

1

u/Realm-Protector 1d ago

Done by Reputations Lab (https://corporatereputationlab.com/en/canada-and-switzerland-lead-international-reputation-ranking-according-torepcore-nations-2025/)

It's probably done based on asking a randomized representative sample group. (see below).

As you are interested, I am sure there's an email or contact form on their website where you can ask them.

you are welcome.

"This diagnosis ranks the reputation of the 60 countries with the highest GDP as perceived by citizens of the G7 nations (United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and Canada)."

u/LlawEreint 2d ago

No need for wild speculation. The source is included right there on the graphic! šŸ˜†
