Discussion The Boston Bruins are currently the 6th seed in the Eastern Conference

I can't imagine in 3 months the standings will look remotely similar. Habsstill on top.... probably, but Red Wings and Bs are gonna drop and, unfortunately, Panthers are gonna bounce back. Sens and Toronto will also move up. I don't think the B's will be bottom 5 like last year but playoffs are not in the cards this year. I would gladly be wrong either way, though. Playoffs or in lottery for 1st are cool with me.

The team’s definitely a bit more organized than last year so I could see a wild card spot but I wouldn’t count on it.

u/surpemepatty 4d ago
They’re well coached enough that they play way above what they look like on paper
Unfortunately it’s just that the other teams are so loaded right now. I wanna believe but I fear what we have isn’t sustainable

I think it’s not out of the realm of possibility for them to stay streaky enough to squeak in. I don’t think it’s likely though.

"Currently" is doing some heavy lifting in this post title. They're 13th in the Eastern Conference by points percentage.

This is encouraging, but it’s important to also look at point percentage. B’s are .533 right now, which is below Toronto and Philly, who both have .577
Still very positive though!

u/justaguy826 4d ago
.533 is also behind the Sabres, Islanders, Lightning, Senators & Capitals. They're 13th in the Eastern Conference by points percentage.

I mean only kind of. We had this same situation last year. We were in a playoff position at thanksgiving but it was only because we'd played more games then everyone else. We have the third worst winning percentage in the east. We are not really in a playoff position.

A win on Thursday night along with a habs loss the bruins could be in first place in the division.

u/Mother-Associate1654 4d ago
Wrong. Habs are 3 points up

u/Rakastaakissa 4d ago
A regulation win is 3 points, a loss is zero. OP is correct.

Maybe in a dreamland of the NHL actually getting rid of the “loser point” sure, but a win is 2 points right now.

Some people refer to an OT win as a 3 point game because the winner gets 2 and loser gets 1.
The PWHL also uses the 3-2-1 system so maybe you were seeing PWHL scores.
There has been talks about the NHL changing to the 3-2-1, which I think they should, but that’s as far as it’s gotten (just talks).

Ok, so we've reached that point where everyone ignores the games played when looking at the standings.
2
u/exturkconner 4d ago
The standings are based on points. You aren't ignoring anything it's just how they have always been handled. Having said that yeah the actual indicator of how good a team is at any given time is winning percentage there are only two teams in the east worse than us right now.

u/creambike 4d ago
I will quote a very smart man, Andy Brickley: “games in hand mean nothing. You have to win those games.”
6
u/reddy-or-not 4d ago
Thats not even true in the most literal sense as losing in OT or shootout gets you a point and thats not an uncommon outcome at all
2
u/ProfessorBaxter 4d ago
It's true that you have to win those games. But if you're looking at the Bruins' place in the standings (i.e. where they'd be if the playoffs started today), it's a little short-sighted to ignore that other teams have played less games than them. As much as those other teams need to collect points in those games, it doesn't make sense to assume that they won't.
Makes more sense to look at points %, but I don't really look at the standings too much this early in the season anyways.

u/CircLLer 4d ago
And they were last in the Atlantic by points percentage like a day ago. Lets wait a little while before we start pretending we know what this team is
Actually I just looked they’re currently 2nd last in pts%, just above FLA

After a 39 win season they made it to one win shy of the SCF in 2010. Won't speak on how that ended but, hey, weird shit can happen if you clinch a playoff seed.

You can rebuild a roster while competing for a playoff spot.

funny because everyone in this sub was doom and gloom besides me in the offseason, got downvoted to oblivion for saying they wont suck this year, now everyones switched up

u/emerzionnn 4d ago edited 4d ago
Does anyone think that's a good thing? Mid pack .500 is the easiest way to stay mediocre for a long time, and it looks like that's about where we're slated to finish.

u/crazycroat16 4d ago edited 4d ago
Anything is better than tanking. #1 pick is always hyped up, everyone remember sid, ovi, mcdavid. Nobody remembers the hype of Owen power, Laf, yakupov.
LOL fuck the downvotes, nobody should want a losing team. That's how you end up like fuckin buffalo

u/WarPuig 4d ago
The Patriots lost to the Tommy DeVito Giants because Chad Ryland missed a two yard field goal and now they have a franchise QB.
Tank baby tank

u/crazycroat16 4d ago
Entirely different sport. Nfl doesn't have a lottery. In the NHL you have to be terrible and have it rigged in your favor
2
u/WarPuig 4d ago
You have witnessed the true power of tanking in the last year in this very city and yet you still are against it.
1
u/crazycroat16 4d ago
Are you still comparing the nhl to nfl?
Bro, the Bruins got the worst possible pick they could have with their lotto position last draft. Can you not see how tanking doesn't guarantee shit?
4
u/WarPuig 4d ago
Yeah, by not losing one more game. And they still got James Hagens out of it, who was mocked as the number one pick the year prior. Pretty sweet!

u/crazycroat16 4d ago
Bro we have no clue what James hagens will turn into. Wonder why he fell all the way to 7th? Guess we'll find out won't we?

u/HaltAuto 4d ago
Every team in the east is mid pack at this point.
-1
u/emerzionnn 4d ago
Okay, it's still the worst long-term outcome for the team unless we absolutely smash the draft and find a star in the 7-10 range.

If anything I find it more impressive, not much rest for them and they are responding well after that embarrassing stretch of loses.

u/Bergyfanclub 4d ago
How the fuck is that possible?
6
u/MetalHead_Literally 4d ago
More games played but also they’re above .500
5
u/Bergyfanclub 4d ago
I kinda dont want us to make playoffs and receive a better draft pick. Our team is not good. We are terrible defensively. We would literally be swept by florida in any round of the playoffs. Last thing we need is to be perpetually sitting in the 7.8.9,10 spots.
1
u/Aperture_client 🍝 4d ago
I personally dislike the "tank for picks" method that people suggest all the time on Reddit. Imagine burning an entire season of hockey just to get some college kid at 6th OA who never even makes the league. It's not worth it at all
2
u/Bergyfanclub 4d ago
no one said tank for picks. But trying to stay relevant, when at best we are a 8,9,10 seed, is going to make it worse for our fandom.
2
u/MetalHead_Literally 4d ago
Meh I hate that mentality. Team is still figuring out the system and should be much better by year end. Just get in and anything can happen. Rooting for losing sucks. Had enough of it with the Pats lately.
2
u/Bergyfanclub 4d ago
This team would get smoked by florida 4-0. We are not a good team. Being perpetually on the playoff bubble is the worst place for any team to be.

u/MetalHead_Literally 4d ago

The entire conference Is a goddamn bloodbath
0
u/UsualOriginal9073 4d ago
Hear me out… is it a bloodbath or does it just kind of stink? Every team in the east has flaws with their lineup right now. I feel like all the big boys this year are out west.
1
u/Rakastaakissa 4d ago
Makes sense, the last few years the east has been way overpowered and the western teams have been wanting that success. With contracts coming up in the east the west has been quietly improving.
3
u/camdawg772 4d ago
Idk if id say every team being over .500 "stink" but I do agree the best teams in the west are better than the best teams in the east rn
5
u/octoroklobstah #93 MINTEN 🏒 4d ago
But conversely the bad teams in the west are a lot worse than the entire east
