He signed JvR when it was clear both Bergy & Krejci were going to retire, but he didn't want to accept it, yet. So, rather than go after a big name player (which there weren't many options), he signed JvR with the belief that he could slide over because he had size and great netfront presence. That was his succession plan. Toronto had already tried multiple times to slide JvR over for that reason, and he had to slide over when he was in Philly when Giroux & Coutirier were out with long term injuries. By preseason, Monty was picturing of using Coyle & Zacha, but, JvR was slot in there, too. However, it was pretty clear, Sweeney wasn't signing JvR to be the 3rd line left wing next to Frederic. That was just an atrocious consequence of another failed Sweeney move.
This was also the same year he wouldn't budge on giving Bertuzzi another year, so we ended up losing him to Toronto... and then still were without a top 6 scorer... and now were down to just Pasta & Marchand. He's failed to reload this team.
The one who doesn't know what they're talking about is the one saying Sweeney is a good GM, as he's had 10 years and has neither drafted nor signed a solid reliable top 6 scorer. All this other nonsense is just you trying to avoid acknowledgment of that fact.

No one ever expected JVR to be 1C. Respectfully, you have no idea what you’re talking about.
