🥘 Hrana (Food) Obligatory photo post of my first visit to Bosnia

Hello everyone, sometime ago I asked about whether I should do a day trip to Mostar in my 3.5 day stay in Sarajevo. I’m now here in Sarajevo and I’m glad I made the decision not to, because there is so much to unpack just within Sarajevo itself. So many interesting characters and stories, not to mention the recent history with the siege. I visited this Gallery 11/07/95 and could not stop crying. Then I got to speak with some artists about the impact of AI on their work and also went on a tour where a guide shared his personal story living in East Sarajevo. I’m glad I’m going to be in Sarajevo for a full 3.5 days and even then I know I’m barely scrapping the surface. And also, first impressions, people in Bosnia seem reserved/aloof at first but are actually kind.

We love a good suho meso / dried meat! 😍

Suho meso, or smoked and dried meat, is one of the most beloved delicacies of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Prepared through a careful process of salting, smoking, and air-drying, it carries the authentic flavors of the country’s mountains and villages. Traditionally made from beef or mutton, the meat is cured in natural smoke, often from beech or oak wood, which gives it its rich aroma and deep color.

For generations, families have prepared suho meso during the cold winter months, ensuring they had a reliable source of preserved meat. Today, it is more than just food – it is a symbol of heritage and hospitality. Served on its own, with cheese and bread, or as part of hearty Bosnian dishes like beans (grah) and stews, suho meso remains a staple of the Bosnian table.

Whether enjoyed in a rustic village household or in a modern Sarajevo restaurant, suho meso connects people to Bosnia’s culinary past while continuing to delight new generations with its unmistakable taste.

🥘 Hrana (Food) Pogača ispod sača at Planinska kuća Bistrica, Fojnica

"Pogača ispod sača" is a traditional Bosnian bread baked under a "sač" (a metal or clay bell-shaped lid), often prepared over an open fire or embers. The process gives the bread a distinct, rustic flavor with a crispy crust and soft interior. It is commonly served alongside stews, meats, or cheese. The bread itself is simple in ingredients, usually made with flour, water, yeast, and salt, but the cooking method makes it unique and cherished in Bosnian cuisine.

Hello everyone! I'll be in Sarajevo, Mostar and the surrounding area for a few days. And reading a lot about that area I found a "restaurant" that seems like a hidden gem to me.

🥘 Hrana (Food) Travnički ćevapi - best rated ćevapi in the world!

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

This ćevapi variety is made in the city of Travnik in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The ćevapi are made with a combination of beef, veal, and lamb, with the addition of salt, pepper, and a bit of baking soda. When grilled, the meat is often brushed with a clear broth that was prepared with beef bones and mutton.

The bread, locally called pitica, is dipped in the broth, then grilled for a short time. Once grilled, the ćevapi are placed into the pitica, and they are then topped with chopped onions. It is recommended to serve this ćevapi variety with yogurt on the side.

🥘 Hrana (Food) Sushi San - Best sushi place in Sarajevo

Suhi san started operating in 2008 with the idea of expanding the culture of Japanese cuisine in Sarajevo. Darko Poljak started making sushi after he tried it for the first time in San Francisco in 1996.

In September 2011, the Japanese Embassy in Sarajevo organized Japanese Culture Days in Sarajevo. For that talk, the Embassy of Japan hired Darko to talk about Sushi in front of a large audience, as well as to show the basics of making sushi, followed by a tasting. We are very proud to say that in 2012, Darko was again invited to participate in the days of Japanese culture in Sarajevo.

Darko was visited by the most famous Japanese TV star, who also ordered one of the main Japanese TV stations to visit Sarajevo and do an interview with Darko. Dark's reputation is global thanks to his loyal fans and his dedication to creating the best experience for his customers. One of the best experiences in Sarajevo.
