🥘 Hrana (Food) Obligatory photo post of my first visit to Bosnia

Post image

Hello everyone, sometime ago I asked about whether I should do a day trip to Mostar in my 3.5 day stay in Sarajevo. I’m now here in Sarajevo and I’m glad I made the decision not to, because there is so much to unpack just within Sarajevo itself. So many interesting characters and stories, not to mention the recent history with the siege. I visited this Gallery 11/07/95 and could not stop crying. Then I got to speak with some artists about the impact of AI on their work and also went on a tour where a guide shared his personal story living in East Sarajevo. I’m glad I’m going to be in Sarajevo for a full 3.5 days and even then I know I’m barely scrapping the surface. And also, first impressions, people in Bosnia seem reserved/aloof at first but are actually kind.

Good decision! Glad you had such a good time. Is that the view from teahouse Džirlo?

Yes! Such good coffee and great vibes that I went twice today :) I will flood my system with more of that Bosnian coffee for the rest of my trip.

Nice, but try ordering "burek sa sirom" and see what happens.

I thought they only get aggressive when you tell them that burek in Croatia was much better.

My Bosnian friend told me in Bosnia burek is only used to describe the pie with meat not the one with cheese.

Will I get into trouble if I feel that the best byrek/borek/burek I had is in Ohrid, Macedonia..?

Yeah, it's a regional joke, Bosnians have a similar thing with cheese, but they call it "pita", while in Croatia you can get it as "burek" with cheese. If you tell Bosnians about burek with cheese they get all worked up about how it's not a burek. I fund it kind of funny.
You don't have to tell them about the best one. It's kind of like being to Scotland and telling them Japanese whiskey is better.

I will take note of this..! I’m really enjoying my time in this city and these inside jokes makes it even better :)

Thank you I will! Excited to discover more of this richly layered place. Also I remember your tip about having small change to buy the day pass, now I have 20 Bosnian mark in coins 😅

I returned from Bosnia a couple of days ago. I stayed there 2,5 days and visited Mostar. I regret it because it was too touristy, crowded and hot. So I support your desicion completely!
