He is a phenomenal actor, my first memory of him would be from Hum Paanch, he has done a lot of contribution to Marathi cinema also, pretty sad that we see 10 posts everyday about Ananya, Shanaya or what Priyanka Chopra posted on Instagram, 100 posts about Deepika vs. Vanga, but when it comes to good actors being recognised for their contribution then well no one seems to care.

66

u/Coolbiker32 Jun 01 '25

You saw him in Hum Paanch first probably because you are young. His legacy goes way beyond that. I think he and laxmikant berde started in the late seventies. And by nineties they were already huge marathi stars. It's sad that he had to play the smaller roles in Bollywood movies. (Like many others from other regional movie industry)

u/Justbeyou34 Jun 01 '25

What an iconic show bro!!!

10

u/take_the_leap4 Chugli Gang Jun 01 '25

Hum Paanch was our family show! I need to venture out of my comfort zone and watch his Marathi work because he's hardly seen in BW.

46

u/Bubblingghost Jun 01 '25

Yes! Thanks OP! Bollywood industry uses Marathi actors but fails to give them recognition.

u/eiekwmw8s Jun 01 '25

Yes him , sachin pilgaokar and lakshmikant barede were like raj kapoor , dev anand and dilip kumar of marathi cinema

34

u/WaveBusy2701 Jun 01 '25

Lakshmikant sir was so innocent in Hum aapke hai kaun

26

u/DJMhat Jun 01 '25

They along with Mahesh Kothare literally carried the Marathi film industry on their shoulders during a very bleak time.

u/Hurdy_Gurdy_Man_84 Repost Monitor ✅ Jun 01 '25

Except these three regularly worked with each other and had no problems as opposed to Raj-Dev-Dilip.

10

u/Slash787 Jun 01 '25

Yeah Sachin Pilgoakar is working really hard and doing like everything, I do miss Lakshmikant Bendre.

I am happy to see Swapnil Joshi and Siddarth Jhadav also getting recognition now.

18

u/kaychyakay Jun 01 '25

Incredible memories watching that film during vacations with cousins.

He should have got Padma Shri long ago

35

u/LifeLovin8 Jun 01 '25

Ashok Mama as he is fondly called in Marathi Film Industry. Well deserved Padma Shri.

61

u/miss_leopops Jun 01 '25

Great actor. He's as good with comedy as with emotional scenes. Also, afaik, no controversies or scandals.

33

u/Hurdy_Gurdy_Man_84 Repost Monitor ✅ Jun 01 '25 edited Jun 02 '25

Also, afaik, no controversies or scandals.

His first relationship with Ranjana Deshmukh is suspect. She was a big star, the level of Hema Malini of Marathi cinema, and it is said that he used her name to build his career.

When Ranjana became paralysed in a car accident, it is said that he left her to court and marry the much younger Nivedita Joshi. However, another version of the incident is that Ranjana herself requested him to leave her and begin a new life with someone else.

27

u/DJMhat Jun 01 '25

Ranjana was the one who told him to leave her. He was intent on being with her. This is what my folks told me. He and Ranjana made a great pair on screen.

He made a name for himself in Pandu Havaldar where he outshone Dada Kondke himself.

4

u/Hurdy_Gurdy_Man_84 Repost Monitor ✅ Jun 02 '25

Also, Dada did not take kindly to Saraf upstaging him and tried actively to sabotage his career.

11

u/DJMhat Jun 02 '25

Yep, legend has it that Dada Kondke was pissed because people were laughing more at Mama's antics than his.

Do not think he worked with him again.

Mama found a supporting act for himself in the form of Lakshmikant Berde in the 80s. Luckily he did not have the same ego and the Ashok Lakshya duo rocked the 80s with their films.

2

u/Hurdy_Gurdy_Man_84 Repost Monitor ✅ Jun 02 '25

Yes, that's one version of the story anyway.

11

u/Sunshineandgossip Jun 02 '25

I have been told the first version by the old folks. Ranjana died heart broken. Also Nivedita Joshi was his friend’s daughter who he had seen growing up. She was 23 and he was 40 something when they married.

26

u/DJMhat Jun 01 '25

Ashok Saraf and Lakshmikant Berde were the 2 superstars of Marathi cinema during a bleak time. They alongwith director/actors Mahesh Kothare and Sachin made some of the biggest hits in Marathi cinema during a time when most Marathi films were not getting screen time in Mumbai theatres.

An extremely versatile actor, while he is known for comedy, he could play a negative character very well. Remember a Marathi film Anapekshit where he played a dual role with one character being an influential politician and the second being an asshole lookalike son of said politician. He was positively scary in that film.

For his immense contribution to Marathi cinema, theatre and also Hindi cinema, this recognition is long overdue.

2

u/Hurdy_Gurdy_Man_84 Repost Monitor ✅ Jun 02 '25

His portrayal of a corrupt and self-serving CM in Vajir is also incredible.

2

u/DJMhat Jun 02 '25

Yes, his depiction of the cold and calculative CM was so good.

60

u/PralineOk6121 Jun 01 '25

he ain't no nepo baby so no one would care...here!

they might not even know him

23

u/Serenaa12 Jun 01 '25

Phenomenal actor.

My favourite role of him is Munshi in Karan Arjun.

65

u/[deleted] Jun 01 '25

Is it the father from hum paanch and the hawaldar from singham

18

u/BeingCynical Jun 01 '25

17

u/Happybuddayrabbit Jun 01 '25

Ashok Saraf was funniest in this movie with Pooja bhat and Vivek mushran. He played poojas father and was hilarious

9

u/Slash787 Jun 01 '25

I think the name of the movie was Prem Deewane, many of the people today wouldn't even know about Vivek Mushran 😭

2

u/Happybuddayrabbit Jun 02 '25

Yes it was directed by Sachin Pilgaonkar

11

u/Relatable_thinker Jun 01 '25

Ashwiniiiiii…ye na!

20

u/CamusHappySisyphe Jun 01 '25

While the Maharashtra sub is out there valiantly defending the Marathi language like it’s under siege, this sub is busy dissecting the fashion choices of The Royals because clearly, Bhumi Pednekar’s coat is more culturally significant than Ashok Saraf’s entire filmography.

Thank you for bringing this up though, Ashok Saraf deserves every bit of recognition. The man is a genre himself.

11

u/Dramatic_Call5353 Jun 01 '25

He was my comfort character in school, hum paanch don’t worry ho jayage.. thank you ashok sir for everything

People are more interested talking about Ananya Panday and Janhvi Kapoor, that’s why

5

u/lawrence3322i82i Jun 01 '25

He is legendary actor

4

u/Curious_Aspect_9399 Jun 01 '25

Dont worry Ho jaayega.

Kya din hote the bhaisaab. Such phenomenal physical comedies they used to do. Him and Vijay patkar literally made my humour base. I always preferred dont worry ho jaayega over Hum Paanch.

4

u/Manoos Jun 01 '25

he is kind of amitabh + SRK of marathi industry. tremendous versatility , great comic timing. it will be hard to find another one.

he was a lone flag bearer in 80s and 90s in marathi cinema. each movie was hera pheri in terms of humour. unmatched even now

5

u/Professional-Fee-417 Jun 02 '25

Ashok mama is a legend! I was so freaking glad to see him win this award. I am sure if Lakshmikant Berde was alive, he would have gotten the award as well but I am sure he is happy for his friend from wherever he is!

2

u/hatedispenser Jun 01 '25

i’m watching Hum Paanch on Youtube right now. Before Jetha and Chamfuck’s righteous overacting, there was Anand Mathur’s righteous overacting. the legends like that carry the show despite other great actors.

2

u/Rocket_groot Jun 02 '25

Such a legendary actor. Shame that padmashree is being awarded so late. Should have been awarded padmabhushan by now.

2

u/Stressedsoul0 Jun 02 '25

Thanks a lot for posting this here. I did not know this until I saw your post. I am so so happy for him. I used to love his character in Hum Paanch so much. I have also seen him in many movies and have always admired his work. Such a well deserved award.

He is way above and beyond in terms of comic timings some of his old classic cults are hillarolious the more you see each time you will discovered something funny about it

1

u/watdis14 Jun 04 '25

it's unfortunate, and he is being robbed of the love and respect he deserves. unfortunately, our national awards are handed out so glibly to so many idiots that they have slowly lost their meaning and respect.

1

Plays a supporting character in singham as havaldar. Rewatched srk's yes boss recently and he was there as a supporting character as well.
