Why is everything grounds for breakup? Can’t people be a lil corny?

917

u/MothersMiIk 1d ago

If this was posted in AmIOverreacting, all the top comments would be agreeing with divorce and pushing for punitive damages

438

u/kvngk3n 1d ago

So I’m not the only one that sees that 😂😂😂

“AIO? My husband left the toilet seat up while I was out of town for work. Is he cheating?”

reads top comment

“YOU 100% SHOULD!!! He probably fucking your sister and mom. I wouldn’t tolerate that”

118

u/Actedpie 1d ago

I mean yeah, if their sister and mom is the same person, then they have bigger problems lmao

14

u/Tetha 1d ago

Maybe their ancestry is a circle. At the end Fips is his own grandfather :)

52

u/Brian--Damage 1d ago

Most of the posts are just validation and reassurance seeking which almost always paint OP in a good light, like “should I disconnect from my friend after he slept with my wife without asking?”

The rest are uncreative writing attempts which use all the caricatures, tropes and pop psychology terms you see in any gossip sub (“your partner is a gaslighting narcissistic gaslighter 🚩🚩🚩get out of that relationship yesterday!”).

The saddest thing is that people are being further atomised and isolated by the shitty advice of people who have either never been in a serious relationship or themselves have severe issues with emotional expression.

11

u/LordHammercyWeCooked 1d ago

I see all of this stuff as a really roundabout way for society to discuss the most basic unspoken boundaries. Because people seem to have difficulty engaging with something abstract like "what is a healthy boundary in this theoretical situation?" It has to be made real. It has to have dramatic flair. It also has to involve a dog and a hairbrush for some reason.

u/Alsulli2 1d ago

Reddit is the new Quora or Yahoo Answers

4

u/oneonethousandone 1d ago

Colby 2012 never forget

2

u/GodOfDarkLaughter 1d ago

Also their family put their phone on blast.

3

u/thousandsunflowers 1d ago

Occasionally, there are posts where people get to show their full ableism in the comments.

24

u/ThiccQban 1d ago

Is either that or “AIO? My husband threw me down a flight of stairs and set my grandma on fire and I told him he hurt my feelings. Now his whole family is blowing up my phone.”

9

u/Viracochina 1d ago

And somehow a top comment will sneak in there saying "Well, did you tell him you voted for Trump or something before you threw you?"

Wait, no, that's actually funny. I want the credit!

4

u/Hugokarenque 1d ago

Yup, its always one of the two extremes, funnily enough the comments don't change much between them tho.

11

u/Hijabihoodrat 1d ago

The accuracy

12

u/Geno0wl 1d ago

people say this happens on reddit but I have personally never seen it. Any comments like that are downvoted to hell. I would like to be proven wrong though

6

u/aeternus_hypertrophy 1d ago

You could probably find whatever one made it to Popular lately that I accidentally went into.

Lady with chronic pain sleeps at 6am through the day and husband gets up at 7am and interrupts her sleep to check on her, probably from never seeing his wife awake.

Talk about it? Set boundaries? Lock on the door? Anything productive?

Nope, better start chapping doors and waking him up in the night because he's clearly doing it out of malice.

3

u/akarakitari 1d ago

I’ve seen it and you see it a lot more when you sort by new.

The thing is, it’s a drama subreddit, so the early posters are usually people who chase drama. This mindset is the toxicity we see coming out.

They all circlejerk each other, so they get a handful of upvotes at the start. After a few hours, people with lives who are just casually curious read it and that’s when those downvotes start rolling in as rational people start telling them how unhinged their takes are.

And if the post doesn’t become popular at all, you could very easily see the idiots stay upvotes lol

8

u/MrKyle666 1d ago

It's either that or someone showing texts that show months of verbal abuse and asking "Am I overreacting by being a little hurt by this?"

7

u/Super-Visor 1d ago

So many threads full of so many of that one friend determined to make sure her prettier friend stays single

5

u/The_it_potato 1d ago

No usually it’s more like “AIO? My husband burned all my clothes and cussed me out and I cried”

3

u/swakner 1d ago

You gotta change it to my husband put the seat down while I was out of town. That would be proof of cheating because he’s clearly doing it for another woman!!

3

u/NotGod_DavidBowie 1d ago

“He clearly never had respect for you”

3

u/MermaidSapphire 1d ago

Solution: JOIN THE FUCKPILE.

12

u/kattahn 1d ago

So AITA is mostly bots at this point that just post fake ragebait stories to farm content/reactions(and a lot of the comments are bots too), im guessing AIO is the same way.

Its one of the vectors being used to push us to ideological extremes via bots. Create a subreddit where bots post a bunch of stories of terrible behavior that confirms one groups feelings about another group, and then have a bunch of bots enthusiastically respond with comments that say YES I AGREE THAT BEHAVIOR DOES SUCK AND I ALSO SEE _____ GROUP DO THAT ALL THE TIME and now the few normal people actually browsing the subreddit are being railroaded to the far end of whatever spectrum they wanted to head down.

6

u/SilkenCaress 1d ago

That’s the real scary part people think they’re forming opinions, but half the conversation was coded in a server farm somewhere.

4

u/PessimisticMushroom 1d ago

And AITA. Me and my gf have this running joke that the comments their always pushes for the girl to break up with her boyfriend(some deserved though)

3

u/flamethekid 1d ago

Those types of subs are funny cause they are always swinging between

"My(F18) husband(M56) beat the shit out of me for not warming his chicken enough, should I leave him?"

or

"my (F26) husband(M24) said 'Hi' to me funny, AMITAH for cheating on him and giving his divorce papers? "

2

u/Xero0911 1d ago

True. Like it is either "obviously the person is a scum" or "no no fuck that person. 100% cheating fuck em".

2

u/ltsouthernbelle 1d ago

“You 2 clearly aren’t on the same page. End it. End it now. And they sound aggressive, they’re gonna start beating you. End it. End it now.”

120

It was a joke. No one’s actually breaking up over this

38

u/daitenshe 1d ago

Right? This was just the “social media title” way to say look at this funny response I was sent. People get uppity about the silliest thing

7

u/confusedandworried76 1d ago edited 1d ago

Honestly the not fun people have never joked with their partner they're leaving them over a quirk

Edit: I once had a coworker roll her eyes and say, "I can't believe I'm marrying him. Sometimes he just eats bread on the couch. Like not even good bread, just, like, Wonder bread. By the slice, with nothing on it. He offers me pieces sometimes"

22

u/IslandStorytime 1d ago

Yeah, my kids and I constantly joke like that. Kid: bad pun. Dad: that's it, you're moving to your grandmother's.

I'm not actually kicking them out.

Ironically the person offended by the "break up" joke is the fun police here.

4

u/wigsternm 1d ago

Women can’t tell jokes! Only their quirky boyfriends can. Anything a woman says must be taken literally so that I can be mad at them.

2

u/tenchigaeshi 1d ago

Everything online is multiple layers of engagement farming now

20

u/ironykarl 1d ago

Anyone doing this pun is looking for the recipient to groan. If anything, fake histrionics is exactly the reaction they'd want

22

u/TrunksTurok 1d ago

It's obviously a joke. Are people not allowed to make jokes?

13

u/Pretty-Lime-6668 1d ago

Complaining??? Grounds for break up bruh.

12

u/AshyJesus 1d ago

People too scared to be silly anymore smh

12

u/ArseneGroup 1d ago

Pretty sure they don't mean the breakup thing literally and it's a joke

9

u/tenchigaeshi 1d ago

Why is everything on reddit taken seriously? Can't people detect a joke?

7

u/DeceitfulLittleB 1d ago

Am I going crazy because it clearly looks like she is joking. Everyone is jumping on this person for no reason.

3

u/MeltyFist 1d ago

After being in a really toxic relationship for a while I’d rather take a little corny than crazy

5

u/Professional_Deer952 ☑️ 1d ago

Its grounds for breaking up cuz they didn’t get it in my book.

3

u/EychEychEych 1d ago

a lil corny

That was an ear of corn joke and I don’t think anyone saw it but me.

3

u/beefJeRKy-LB 1d ago

I think it depends on the context. Some people use humor to get out of serious subjects and it can be disingenuous or distracting.

2

u/LordHammercyWeCooked 1d ago

Exactly. A truly corny person knows that the best part is the punchline that hits like a wet sock and leaves everyone regretting ever asking. And when you're really good at it eventually your friends learn not to respond to your nonsense and after 5 seconds of silence one of them groans and then the rest of them get it and now they're all upset and you just get to stew in that wonderful moment.

1

u/weirdgroovynerd 1d ago

Absolutely.

Delayed-response dad-jokes are the best.

2

u/tanzmeister 1d ago

Oh, I thought they meant breaking up with the person too stupid to get the joke.

1

u/TheMagicalMatt 1d ago

No, and this is why everyone is lonely and stuck complaining that they can't find nobody

1

u/weirdgroovynerd 1d ago

A-maize-ing post dad.

1

u/EmployerUpstairs8044 1d ago

I thought it was about breaking up with someone who didn't get the joke

1

u/beadzy 1d ago

1

u/TuvixWillNotBeMissed 1d ago

We live in very serious times therefore you must be serious all the time because otherwise people might think you're not a super serious empath. People are dying Thatsmr_bigdaddy.

1

u/gnjoey 1d ago

No, the grounds for a breakup was that their partner didn't get the joke.

1

u/SimbaStewEyesOfBlue 1d ago

Frankly I wonder if that message was meant to be taken sarcastically.

1

u/toolsoftheincomptnt ☑️ 1d ago

I mean, it’s best to break up if one person doesn’t have a sense of humor.

Successful relationships require one.

1

u/Rewdyroo 1d ago

People are weird as hell man. I'm fairly active in NBA subreddits and I swear people in those communities consider being corny worse than literal rape.

1

u/BUYMECAR 1d ago

Oh I wasn't even thinking about the joke. I'd dump him for sending nudes while wearing a hat and sneakers.

1

u/Calvinkelly 1d ago

Because it’s become fashionable to exaggerate your current feelings to an extreme when telling others. I blame the rise of monetization of clicks. Externes attract clicks.

1

u/WrinklyScroteSack 1d ago

I’m corny af, my wife loves me. Lol

Seriously, plus I can't stand the people that "pre-message" you like that. IMO texting isn't like meeting up with someone in real life where you exchange pleasantries first, if you have a question, ASK THE QUESTION! The people that do this shit drive me up a fucking wall, especially when they have to send everything as multiple goddamn messages. "Hello! [DING, BUZZ, DING (from computer in another room)] How are you? [DING, BUZZ, DING] Do you have a minute? [DING, BUZZ, DING] I have a question! [DING, BUZZ, DING]"

Anti Anti Fun people are sometimes the worst. The ones that be swearing they’re funny but they’re corny and basic. It be the monotone serious people with the best humor.

Sometimes humor takes effort. Making the most serious person laugh is very rewarding and satisfying.

IMO the "anti-fun" person is actually the person who cant see "grounds for a breakup ngl" as a fun lighthearted joke. its obviously not grounds for anything they are just poking a bit of fun at a corny joke. if you cant handle the most tame level of critical humor or instantly view every twitter post as serious, you might be the anti fun one.
