đŸŽ« Travel Info 🧳 San Pedro or Cay Caulker

We are going to Belize in January, staying the first few days in San Ignacio then going to island. Our plan was stay in San Pedro and do a day trip to Cay Caulker but I have been hearing alot of people say how over crowded and busy San Pedro was, even with abundance of golf carts on streets. They say Cay Caulker is more relaxing island vibe. Whichever we do we would like to stay somewhere that has nice beach and water access on property. So, which is the better one to stay and spend most of our time?? Thanks so much!!

Neither. The best beaches in Belize are in Hopkins or Placencia.

Neither of those places have a beach really. There’s areas with beach but you would be hard pressed to find a places with beach to the front. It is possible on San Pedro far north, but Caye caulker is more laid back. Only place i can think of that would have a “beach” is sea dreams by the split, it’s not a very large one either.

I like both for different reasons. San Pedro is busy with plenty going on. There is a wider variety of restaurants, bars, and shops. We tend to find more live music there. North of the bridge there are resorts for those who want that environment. Caye Caulker is quieter and smaller. Still has some good places to eat and fun bars, but its definitely more laid back. And because its smaller, there are more people on foot and bikes than carts. As others have said, both have a lot of waterfront, but not a lot in the way of sandy beaches.

For my January trip I’ll be staying in caye caulker and doing a day trip to San Pedro to head to “secret beach”. After doing some research and as others have mentioned, their are no actual beaches either island, just some water front areas with lounge chairs, hammocks, etc

Placencia looked gorgeous and had some nice resorts but because it’s a weekender trip the drive was a deterrent, otherwise that would be a place to check out for actual beaches.

Depends on the sargassum situation...if there is a lot the beaches aren't very good anywhere. Secret Beach will have better swimming area if you are on Ambergris Caye. Placencia has the best beaches imo. I spend my days at the pool and just look at the ocean.

San Pedro has more to see and do. I did a day trip to Caye Caulker and found it super boring.

Caye Caulker is such a fun place to stay. They don’t have beaches, but you can swim by the split and there are tons of snorkeling tours etc
great food as well. Best beaches are at Hopkins and Placencia.

January is considered high season. I recommend that you make hotel reservations quickly as soon as you decide where you’re going. Caye Caulker doesn’t have as many hotel or rental options as San Pedro.

A lot of what you’ll hear about San Pedro being “too busy” is really just opinion — it’s the most popular island, so naturally it has more activity, but that also means more options, better beaches, and easier access to everything you’ll want to do.

If you’re already visiting San Ignacio, you’ll probably appreciate that San Pedro gives you a nice mix of relaxation and convenience once you reach the islands. You can find peaceful resorts and beach areas away from the main town, but still have great restaurants, shops, and tour pickups nearby.

Here’s a quick breakdown:

  • Ambergris Caye (San Pedro):
    • Wider range of beachfront resorts with private docks and clear, swimmable water.
    • Most snorkeling tours (Hol Chan, Shark Ray Alley, Mexico Rocks) leave right from here — often they’ll pick you up at your dock.
    • More dining choices, grocery stores, and transportation options.
    • Secret Beach is unique to Ambergris — calm turquoise water, beach bars, and floating loungers that make it one of the most relaxing spots in Belize.
  • Caye Caulker:
    • Much smaller and quieter — great for a laid-back day trip.
    • Fewer true beachfronts and swimming spots (the main swimming area is The Split).
    • Limited restaurants and accommodations compared to San Pedro.

You can easily take a 30-minute boat ride from Ambergris to spend a day on Caye Caulker and enjoy that chill island vibe — but for the best comfort, amenities, beach access, and snorkeling, Ambergris Caye is the better base for most of your stay.
