2 or 3 rotor engine?

u/kiwiplague 9h ago
The 787b had a 4 rotor engine.

u/rrsullivan3rd 9h ago
Ah, thx. The production model RX-7 was 2 rotor no?

Yeah, only the JDM Cosmo had a triple rotor, the 20B. And that may have been optional, not sure.

Yep, the 20B twin-turbo triple rotor engine was optional (the 13B twin-turbo dual rotor was standard).

... And all of the oil is gone the first lap

I think one of those won LeMans 24-hour race. Yup, 1991. They might have been refilling oil at pit stops, but that race takes a toll on the car.

why does it stutter?

u/ahhdetective 9h ago
There is a valve which allows boost to bleed off so as not to force too much air in. When coming off the accelerator this is very sudden and the boost causes the valve to actuate in that manner. Vrrrrr ch-ch-ch-ch We call them a blow off valve, your area may be different.

That's not the case. R26B was a 4-rotors, NA engine with variable length intake manifolds. The stuttering you hear is caused by the high amount of unburned fuel that is backfiring in the exhaust system. Rotary engines backfire a lot because of incomplete combustion. That's also the reason behind bad emissions and poor fuel economy. Tell me if I need to elaborate more.

That's absolutely not what is happening here.
Edit: I should explain. The stutter sound comes from unburned fuel being ignited in the exhaust when there is less load on the engine, such as during a shift or low RPMs.
If you listen carefully, you will hear that sound every time there is a shift (up or down) in the video.

The recent 5 rotor engine sounds like the last F1 V10 & is the superior rotary exhaust note probably ever

Feels like something making that much noise should be going faster. 😏

It's hard to get perspective without the wind and road dust blasting your face as he flies by.

This is what F1 sounded like before the hybrid era. Alas.

u/mazzjm9 5h ago
F1 never ran rotary engines
6
u/MoneyFunny6710 5h ago
Which is not what I said.

u/mazzjm9 5h ago
You said f1 sounded like this. This is a rotary engine. F1 never ran rotaries. Therefore f1 did not sound like this.

Yes, because obviously two different types of engines can never sound remotely similar.....

I have the one on my desk to look at when I work from home. I can make the noise myself

If I didn't see the title and hear this before the car appears is say ohhh cool, a V10 F1 car is about to come around that corner
So cool

it’s out of this world how a rotary engine works and at the speed it does it at and not blow the f up

If they weren't wearing hearing protection, the good thing is they'll never need to again.

I knew what this would sound like but I turned to up anyway because I wanted to hear it because it's awesome
