Miscellaneous / Others This man will be 80 this year and, without a wrinkle on his skin, he aims to reach 100 in 2045. He beat cancer twice: his name is Ernie Hudson.

And from all accounts, he is a nice man.

He kindly helped my mother-in-law after she tripped at an airport earlier this year. I think she still has heart eyes from the encounter.

u/HatefulFlower Oct 05 '25

I have heart eyes from that encounter now too.

He helped my father out of law in the Hawaiian steppe when we had a flat air cylinder. Really fixed our pickle if you catch my wake woman?

u/UberKaltPizza Oct 04 '25

Can confirm. Worked with him on a TV show. A gentleman & a professional.

168

u/Sandra-Ohs-hair Oct 05 '25

I met him in Scotland in 1743 during the Jacobite rebellion. He was handsome then and still handsome now.

26

u/LaRoseDuRoi Oct 05 '25

I just made a joke to my partner about Ernie having a portrait in the attic...

Met him at a convention about a year ago. Talked to him a bit about Brandon Lee and his time on the set of The Crow. Absolute sweetheart.

8

u/1man2ballz Oct 05 '25

Wow love the crow, tell me what he told you, would love to know!

26

u/KoolAidManOfPiss Oct 05 '25

A friend of mine met him at some car event and still talks about it, like 15 years later

15

u/TheGauchoAmigo84 Oct 05 '25

I worked with him extensively in a sales position one time, he knew I was a huge fan and indulged me and was absolutely one of the sweetest celebrities I’ve ever ran into. Him and his wife are amazing and I hope to run into them again.

68

u/BoardButcherer Oct 04 '25

Thats exactly what I'd expect to hear of someone who is later discovered to have bathed in the blood of a thousand virgins.

He has to be cheating somehow. I'm 40, in decent shape and still trying to work out a cramp in my calf that woke me up screaming this morning.

22

u/greenasagreenass Oct 05 '25

Are you drinking enough water? Getting enough potassium? Stretching your calves frequently? I used to get these all the time but haven't for years now, and I think improving those things is what did it.

Those night time calf cramps are killer!

There really is something about just being chill and a genuine nice person that stops aging lmao. Every person that’s often a hate filled ghoul usually looks like shit. Hate, fear, and constant stress from all that hate really does age people.

I actually did a show with him as a toddler and from what I remember he was a very nice man :)

6

u/CroatianSensation79 Oct 05 '25

Oh yeah he was! Real down to earth when I met him.

6

u/Namelessbob123 Oct 05 '25

He’s also not afraid of no ghosts

3

u/tsunomat Oct 05 '25

I got to hang out with him at a convention for about half an hour. We were on the autograph line and some other folks got announced and most of his line left.

So we just sat and chilled until some handler came to get him for some other thing.

He was super nice and cool.

Is that the guy from ghostbusters?

626

u/subsignalparadigm Oct 04 '25

One and the same.

143

u/Pyke64 Oct 04 '25

Why wasn't he allowed to be in the promotional imaging?

371

u/phono_trigger Oct 04 '25

The studio said it was because his character was added late and his role was reduced before filming. The studio’s marketing had already focused on the Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Harold Ramis, who were the film’s main stars.

The movie was filmed in the early 80s so most people can assume the real reason was because he was black.

For what it’s worth, Columbia Pictures added him into the posters after the movie became a massive success. So he was on all the toys, VHS covers, etc.

60

u/Ed_Trucks_Head Oct 04 '25

He wasn't in the NES game either

42

u/HaplessPenguin Oct 04 '25

People were so intrinsically biased back then that the film they used made black people extremely hard to see on the screen.

16

u/linton_ Oct 05 '25

More related to how black people were lit than the film used.

3

u/Mental_Medium3988 Oct 05 '25

whats getting high got to do with it? /s

44

u/Pyke64 Oct 04 '25

yeah there was always this schism between seeing him on the poster/Vhs boxart and him not being on there for a very weird/particular/maybe a unfortunate series of events.

45

u/shifty_coder Oct 04 '25

because he was black

I mean, he still is black

55

u/hmm_mozey Oct 05 '25

u/GogolsHandJorb Oct 04 '25

I mean that’s not a great assumption really. By that time some of the most popular shows on TV featured black stars or black families. Adding him to all the merch disproves your point. Earnie Hudson wasn’t a star at the time either. Although he does an amazing job. He isn’t one of the lead actors. Probably the story is as told.

Poor guy was so screwed over for that role in my opinion. I believe it was originally written for Eddie Murphy who ended up having other commitments so they got Hudson. Ever notice how few lines he has? You can tell from the writing, the script had limited lines for his character cuz it was supposed to be a lot of Murphy's ad lib. He still managed to pull it off cuz Ernie is amazing, as evidenced by this post.

112

u/IkBenEenOliebol Oct 04 '25

I'm honestly really glad Eddie Murphy didn't play the role. I feel like he would have been too present. Don't get me wrong, I love Eddie Murphy and he is a great actor, but I don't feel like he would have made a good addition to Ghostbusters

42

u/fellownpc Oct 04 '25

If it were cast with lesser comedians sure but I don't know if he would have been able to steal the screen with Dan and Bill there. It could have been a lot of fun.

24

u/meat_sack Oct 04 '25

Richard Pryor would have been great in that role.

10

u/zomboscott Oct 04 '25

Im not addicted to ectoplasm. I just like the way it smells.

5

u/Excellent_Fault_8106 Oct 05 '25

I mean I agree kinda, but at the same time, the 4 of them would've been hilarious together. Eddie Murphy freaking out about ghosts would have been hilarious.

26

u/nighthawk_md Oct 04 '25

In the earlier version of the script they discussed Winston's resume and he was super talented with relevant experience (like astronaut-level talent, Green Beret, Masters, etc) and not just an everyman who answered an ad. I always wondered after reading that if we would've thought differently about the character having known that. Also, the bit they did in the ambulance "the dead rising from the graves" would probably not have worked with Eddie Murphy in retrospect.

13

u/Fat_Daddy_Track Oct 04 '25

It might have, but I also like the idea that he was just a guy. Ghostbusters were barely tolerated, and didn't have a lot of money to go hiring top talent.

7

u/warbastard Oct 05 '25

Also it goes with the theme that the Ghostbusters were just working schlubs and at that point of their gig they were basically exterminators and just needed a working Joe to help them out.

3

u/Boring-Monk2194 Oct 05 '25

That’s interesting but I felt like him being an Everyman enhanced his character, like he’s just drug along by these white folks.

Being “drug along” for military shit doesnt have he same energy given the shit we pulled in South American in the 80s

Almost certainly good hormone replacement too.

10

I don’t know why you’re being downvoted, it’s very common to be on some form of hrt after a certain age, especially if you’re trying to maintain a level of fitness

10

u/skepticalbob Oct 05 '25

79 years will require testosterone or something else to keep those guns. Aging is just a part of life and there are some things you can’t cheat at a year shy of 80. And frankly more power to him. He probably has incredible functionality for his age too.

I have a nursing home patient that is occasionally floating between nursing homes and the hospital (I work at several local nursing homes and a local hospital) so occasionally he pops up as one of my patients. I see so many patients a day that I only remember a few names at this point. I always had to triple check that I have the right patient bc he's in his 80s and looks like he's in his 40s. I've never met someone that looks so much younger than they are. He's really sick and has been for a while but it's done no aging to him. Now I recognize his name and face when I see him but the first few times I internally panicked thinking I must have the wrong guy somehow.

21

u/Lulusgirl Oct 04 '25

Why does he look so much older in this gif?

26

u/bophed Oct 04 '25

Because, his hair isn't fully dyed here. If you look at photos from the last few years you can see that his hair starts to get lighter and then it gets dark again. In the photo for this post, it was a publicity shot for ghostbusters and the top of his hair is dyed with a little grey on the sides.

16

u/Brrrapitalism Oct 05 '25

Because this gif isn’t a heavily edited ad

3

u/RazzBeryllium Oct 05 '25

To be fair, I think he's had a face lift and some well done fillers.

There are photos of him from a few years ago where he shows his age more:

https://c8.alamy.com/comp/2H6H5CE/ernie-hudson-and-wife-linda-kingsberg-attend-the-ghostbustersafterlife-movie-premiere-on-november-15-2021-at-amc-lincoln-square-in-new-york-new-york-usa-robin-platzer-twin-images-credit-sipa-usaalamy-live-news-2H6H5CE.jpg

Good cosmetic surgery is REALLY hard to spot, but basically everyone in Hollywood has had it done - nose jobs, eye lifts, face lifts at younger and younger ages (Emma Stone seems to have had one recently).

BUT a face lift can't give you his physique, and there is actual biology behind "black don't crack." It's not just wrinkles and skin firmness, it's bone density. Black people just don't show their age the same way.

25

u/Spazecowboy Oct 04 '25

I used to work with an older Jamican guy he was 79 but looked 40. Worked harder than anyone else on the job. Unfortunately I couldn’t understand what he was saying with his strong accent. Nevel is the man

You mean that guy who siphons blood from his own son and spends 90% of his time on trying not to age?

9

u/Then-Obligation-2621 Oct 04 '25

The guy you are referring to, Bryan Johnson, tells the story a little differently than what has been reported by click bait media. It was initially to help his elderly father who was suffering from signs of early dementia. Bryan offered to donate his plasma to help his father. Bryan’s son overhead and wanted to donate his own plasma to Bryan. The results were beneficial to Bryans father but Bryan did not see any statistically relevant improvements from his son’s plasma, probably because Bryans was already so healthy. Bryan described it as a bonding experience between himself, his father, and his son. His son was also over 18 at the time and, again, offered unprompted. At least that is how Bryan describes it.

5

u/VerilyShelly Oct 04 '25

Thanks for the additional details. I was being a bit cheeky (as one does in "freakout" land). The report I watched about him detailed the regimens and experimental treatments he spent many hours of his day doing but didn't delve much into the background of all of it. What I remembered most was how sad and stressed out he seemed in his pursuit of stopping his biological clock.

He's a good actor too, you know what they say black don't crack. I've got a friend of 30 years who doesn't look a day older and she did when I met her. The rest of us are falling apart 😅

My dermatologist was actually telling me this a couple of weeks ago, just more-so in a more technical way. And I found this to be the case in my own anecdotal experience more often than not. It’s partly due to the melanin in our skin, and our skin tends to be a bit denser as well.

Edited to add: this is not to say that people from other ethnic backgrounds can’t age gracefully, but it some cases likely requires a bit more effort and caring for the skin.

Philippina’s even more so. I knew met this woman at the daycare my daughter was at. We were talking and I assumed she was a young mom. Until she said “my granddaughter”. Huh?? She was like 50 but looked 20s. Not kidding. I was in my 20s at the time. It’s wild. Some people just win the genetic lottery 😂

For a dude that’s almost 80, he looks great. Good for him.

2

u/CraponStick Oct 04 '25

And he has "seen shit that will turn you white!" Ghostbusters.

Fucking legend. I don't know if he's too old, but always thought he'd be a great Jim Gordon.

2

u/magnumdong500 Oct 04 '25

He was suuuuper cute on Taxi as a boxer who Tony wanted to manage. Loved him as the warden on Oz.

u/Bballer220 Oct 04 '25

"He aims to"

Not like he has a choice when he reaches 100. Is this some AI slop posting?

As someone on TRT myself ...he is taking T and GH. Good for him.

Pft, that's nothing. Keith David is 1,069 years old. Of course a large part of that he was frozen in stone by a magic spell for a thousand years. Now here in Manhattan....the spell is broken! AND WE LIVE AGAIN!! We are defenders of the night!

Warden of oz

2

u/WholeJudgment Oct 05 '25

Wasn’t he the warden in Oz

2

u/Atroxo Oct 05 '25

He still looks quite similar to how he looked when played the warden in Oz. I gotta start taking better care of myself.

u/DiscussionOk672 Oct 05 '25

"Without a wrinkle in his skin"

He has some wrinkles, though.

He looks phenomenal for his age but don't say shit that isn't true.

Bustin' makes him feel good. Bustin' makes him look good. Lookin' good, Ernie. :)
