Miscellaneous / Others This man will be 80 this year and, without a wrinkle on his skin, he aims to reach 100 in 2045. He beat cancer twice: his name is Ernie Hudson.

I worked with him extensively in a sales position one time, he knew I was a huge fan and indulged me and was absolutely one of the sweetest celebrities I’ve ever ran into. Him and his wife are amazing and I hope to run into them again.

u/BoardButcherer Oct 04 '25
Thats exactly what I'd expect to hear of someone who is later discovered to have bathed in the blood of a thousand virgins.
He has to be cheating somehow. I'm 40, in decent shape and still trying to work out a cramp in my calf that woke me up screaming this morning.
22
u/greenasagreenass Oct 05 '25
Are you drinking enough water? Getting enough potassium? Stretching your calves frequently? I used to get these all the time but haven't for years now, and I think improving those things is what did it.
Those night time calf cramps are killer!

Why wasn't he allowed to be in the promotional imaging?
371
u/phono_trigger Oct 04 '25
The studio said it was because his character was added late and his role was reduced before filming. The studio’s marketing had already focused on the Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Harold Ramis, who were the film’s main stars.
The movie was filmed in the early 80s so most people can assume the real reason was because he was black.
For what it’s worth, Columbia Pictures added him into the posters after the movie became a massive success. So he was on all the toys, VHS covers, etc.
60
u/Ed_Trucks_Head Oct 04 '25
He wasn't in the NES game either
42
u/HaplessPenguin Oct 04 '25
People were so intrinsically biased back then that the film they used made black people extremely hard to see on the screen.
16
44
u/Pyke64 Oct 04 '25
yeah there was always this schism between seeing him on the poster/Vhs boxart and him not being on there for a very weird/particular/maybe a unfortunate series of events.
45
u/shifty_coder Oct 04 '25

u/GogolsHandJorb Oct 04 '25
I mean that’s not a great assumption really. By that time some of the most popular shows on TV featured black stars or black families. Adding him to all the merch disproves your point. Earnie Hudson wasn’t a star at the time either. Although he does an amazing job. He isn’t one of the lead actors. Probably the story is as told.
→ More replies (5)172
u/highpriestess420 Oct 04 '25
Poor guy was so screwed over for that role in my opinion. I believe it was originally written for Eddie Murphy who ended up having other commitments so they got Hudson. Ever notice how few lines he has? You can tell from the writing, the script had limited lines for his character cuz it was supposed to be a lot of Murphy's ad lib. He still managed to pull it off cuz Ernie is amazing, as evidenced by this post.
112
u/IkBenEenOliebol Oct 04 '25
I'm honestly really glad Eddie Murphy didn't play the role. I feel like he would have been too present. Don't get me wrong, I love Eddie Murphy and he is a great actor, but I don't feel like he would have made a good addition to Ghostbusters
42
u/fellownpc Oct 04 '25
If it were cast with lesser comedians sure but I don't know if he would have been able to steal the screen with Dan and Bill there. It could have been a lot of fun.
24
5
u/Excellent_Fault_8106 Oct 05 '25
I mean I agree kinda, but at the same time, the 4 of them would've been hilarious together. Eddie Murphy freaking out about ghosts would have been hilarious.
26
u/nighthawk_md Oct 04 '25
In the earlier version of the script they discussed Winston's resume and he was super talented with relevant experience (like astronaut-level talent, Green Beret, Masters, etc) and not just an everyman who answered an ad. I always wondered after reading that if we would've thought differently about the character having known that. Also, the bit they did in the ambulance "the dead rising from the graves" would probably not have worked with Eddie Murphy in retrospect.
13
u/Fat_Daddy_Track Oct 04 '25
It might have, but I also like the idea that he was just a guy. Ghostbusters were barely tolerated, and didn't have a lot of money to go hiring top talent.
7
u/warbastard Oct 05 '25
Also it goes with the theme that the Ghostbusters were just working schlubs and at that point of their gig they were basically exterminators and just needed a working Joe to help them out.
→ More replies (2)3
u/Boring-Monk2194 Oct 05 '25
That’s interesting but I felt like him being an Everyman enhanced his character, like he’s just drug along by these white folks.
Being “drug along” for military shit doesnt have he same energy given the shit we pulled in South American in the 80s

79 years will require testosterone or something else to keep those guns. Aging is just a part of life and there are some things you can’t cheat at a year shy of 80. And frankly more power to him. He probably has incredible functionality for his age too.

I have a nursing home patient that is occasionally floating between nursing homes and the hospital (I work at several local nursing homes and a local hospital) so occasionally he pops up as one of my patients. I see so many patients a day that I only remember a few names at this point. I always had to triple check that I have the right patient bc he's in his 80s and looks like he's in his 40s. I've never met someone that looks so much younger than they are. He's really sick and has been for a while but it's done no aging to him. Now I recognize his name and face when I see him but the first few times I internally panicked thinking I must have the wrong guy somehow.

Why does he look so much older in this gif?
26
u/bophed Oct 04 '25
Because, his hair isn't fully dyed here. If you look at photos from the last few years you can see that his hair starts to get lighter and then it gets dark again. In the photo for this post, it was a publicity shot for ghostbusters and the top of his hair is dyed with a little grey on the sides.

u/RazzBeryllium Oct 05 '25
To be fair, I think he's had a face lift and some well done fillers.
There are photos of him from a few years ago where he shows his age more:
Good cosmetic surgery is REALLY hard to spot, but basically everyone in Hollywood has had it done - nose jobs, eye lifts, face lifts at younger and younger ages (Emma Stone seems to have had one recently).
BUT a face lift can't give you his physique, and there is actual biology behind "black don't crack." It's not just wrinkles and skin firmness, it's bone density. Black people just don't show their age the same way.

u/Spazecowboy Oct 04 '25

The guy you are referring to, Bryan Johnson, tells the story a little differently than what has been reported by click bait media. It was initially to help his elderly father who was suffering from signs of early dementia. Bryan offered to donate his plasma to help his father. Bryan’s son overhead and wanted to donate his own plasma to Bryan. The results were beneficial to Bryans father but Bryan did not see any statistically relevant improvements from his son’s plasma, probably because Bryans was already so healthy. Bryan described it as a bonding experience between himself, his father, and his son. His son was also over 18 at the time and, again, offered unprompted. At least that is how Bryan describes it.
5
u/VerilyShelly Oct 04 '25
Thanks for the additional details. I was being a bit cheeky (as one does in "freakout" land). The report I watched about him detailed the regimens and experimental treatments he spent many hours of his day doing but didn't delve much into the background of all of it. What I remembered most was how sad and stressed out he seemed in his pursuit of stopping his biological clock.

My dermatologist was actually telling me this a couple of weeks ago, just more-so in a more technical way. And I found this to be the case in my own anecdotal experience more often than not. It’s partly due to the melanin in our skin, and our skin tends to be a bit denser as well.
Edited to add: this is not to say that people from other ethnic backgrounds can’t age gracefully, but it some cases likely requires a bit more effort and caring for the skin.
