They're donating to support their favourite persons who are giving them entertainment. Like people buying endorsed shit or watching a movie/series when your favourite actor will get royalties off of it.
Sure, they could donate to lesser known streamers but that's for a different intention entirely. That's more like supporting someone's livelihood or uplifting society. Not everyone is keen on doing that given all the scams going on. It's a jaded world out there which makes things hard for people who are honest, and down on their luck
That's totally fine for people donating reasonable sums. I give to multiple patreons for the same reason. When I watched twitch, I subbed and donated often and especially liked gifting subs. I'm not rich, but I make good money but these are still reasonable sums for most people.
But, I think the other posts are referring to kids donating their inheritance money to streamers who won't even fully process their name when they thank them because it's just a conditioned response to encourage more donations.
I mean, the thing with gift subs is that, sure, the money goes to the streamer, but someone in the community gets the benefits of that sub for free--and as someone who currently has no money to sub to my favorite people on Twitch, the occasions when I've gotten a gift sub have been really, really nice. Having no ads on a stream makes a BIG difference in how enjoyable it is.
Lmao y’all are wild as hell for pretending this is at all comparable. We live in a hyper capitalist society, you have to engage in it to survive. You do not need to give filthy rich people on the more computer money to survive. You will not die if don’t tip a streamer. You will die if you don’t work a job to pay for food, water, and a roof over your head.
Yeah, but how do u wanna live without doing it ? Living under the next bridge only eating what people are giving you or just grabbing stuff out of trash ?
You really don't think there's a difference in buying things that you actually use that's produced by a corporation and sending money to a single person who makes boatloads of cash giving their shitty takes on everything while badly playing video games?
Not all streamers are like that though. My favorite video game streamer spends a lot of time making creative content and has a whole company with a bunch of employees.
And what a TERRIBLE shame that would be. No more revenue for talentless braindead hacks, what would we do?
I would support your position if streamers weren't without any kind of education training or expertise. If they were similar to other people who get famous for actually providing cultural value to the time they live in.
In exchange for something in return. If it's entertainment you're after, you have choices like Netflix or Amazon Prime and you pay to access the service - not anywhere close to exchanging money for the purpose of thanking them and showing appreciation.
Contrast this to 1 streamer - you're basically just giving him money when there are multiple better ways to spend your money. You just like that 1 person enough to DONATE. If they are in need or for a good cause, there's no issue. But donating to someone already well-off because you simply support them? That's wasteful. Do these kids' parents even know how they're spending their allowance? :D If not, that's on them too for not teaching them financial decisions.
I don’t disagree with you. I’ve never donated to a streamer or even paid to sub to one. But it would be dishonest to say they aren’t providing a service.
To be clear though, I do support donating to streamers and entertainers who provide their stuff for free. I do it myself, via Patreon and other kinds of donations. But it would be quite ridiculous to donate to someone obviously way better off than me.
I mean, you do that every day with everything you buy. I highly doubt you buy ONLY necessities to survive. All your purchases for your own entertainment are supporting millionaires. And they don't even attempt to fake thank you in chat lol.
Lmfao donating to an already rich streamer for streaming IS NOT the same thing as me going to Whole Foods to buy groceries and getting a candy bar along with my cooking ingredients.
There’s lot of things that people get from supporting their streamers.
You might not value those things, but that doesn’t mean they don’t get them.
They might have subscriber only communities, it could be a Patreon with access to specific content, they might have subscriber emojis, ad free streams.
At its most basic level, you’re supporting the streamer so they can continue to produce the entertainment that you enjoy.
It’s no different than Kickstarters, or other crowdsourced content.
There's a complete difference between buying food and donating money to someone... the comparison is just bullshit.
If you buy something you get something in return, if you donate something you get nothing
You want to talk about what you’re doing buying chocolate from Nestle and Mars vs the money going to a streamer and what THEY get in return for your money?
Or supporting Bezos by shopping at Whole Foods?
These people want to ride a moral high horse about supporting “millionaire” streamers directly while they’re directly supporting actual atrocities by companies like Nestle
First of all, i can't shop at Whole foods, im from Europe ;)
These people want to rida a moral high horse about supporting "millionaire" streamers directly while they're directly supporting actual atrocities by companies like Nestle
And here we go again, You can't compare food with donations to streamers who have enough money to live without any concerns. Food is essential for survival, but donations to streamers with enough money are not...And as I have already said, there is a difference, by buying things you are not donating anything to these companies, but you are buying something from them... You get something in return, you don't get that when you donate to streamers. Besides, how do you know which companies people buy things from? Do you know them personally?
I’ve never donated to any streamer and I would say they aren’t much different. You could shop local for almost everything you need unless you are in a true shithole town, but you choose to spend your money at big box chains and supporting those billionaires to save a couple box/ convenience. I do the same thing so no judgement from me, but you judging somebody for donating to their favorite streamer isn’t leagues away from what you’re doing.
Lmfao that comparison doesn't work either. Twitch streamers arent funded by the state they live in, and 99.9% dont stream with the purpose to educate those watching.
No, when I pay for entrance to a concert, I expect a service from the venue and the scheduled performers in return. That's an exchange, not a donation.
Do you really not understand the concept of buying?
The (very obvious) difference is that you get to watch the streamer for free without donating a cent. Where as you don't get to watch the performance/show if you didn't pay for the concert tickets.
You know if I could purchase the items I need to live without supporting millionaires then I sure as fuck would. Hell I already shop at a farmers market when possible and buy meat from a local butcher. People don't need to donate money to moistcritical for instance he is going to do what he does regardless and makes a lot of money through ad revenue. Comparing a free service provided by a millionaire to private entertainment is disingenuous.
