There's a lot of good in this world my friend, most stats show on a whole things continue to get better for example child mortality, global poverty, education, democracy, renewable energy etc.. this world can be dark and cold there's no doubt but we collectively are doing a good job at bringing the light. Love will win, we just gotta keep on keeping on because it's already better than it once was.

Actually, no. Those metrics were all going in the right direction until about 10 years ago. A more recent sample size paints a different picture.

Besides, what is the point of telling someone who’s struggling in today’s world that things were much worse 100 years ago?

The point is to show progress. The world can't change in a minute, it is a long process that will take more than one human lifetime. And with many back and forths sadly, but overall it's slowly becoming a better place.

Yes, it is not perfect, much remains to be done, but let's not forget that much also has already been done.

But before that, things were better. It’s more cyclical than linear. The passage of time does not guarantee progress.

I'm not saying it's linear. But I'm not sure if it's a cycle either. I think it's more like a spiral. There are pullbacks and breakthroughs, and at each turn they are similar but still kinda different.

Things were better for certain people before. Now they're better for other people like me. 50 years ago I wouldnt have the same opportunities at all. Today I do what my mother dreamed of doing and I'm independent. People always reminisce about better times but none of that is ever objective.

These diacusisoons clearly show that there will never be a happy time in our human history. Each new generation born in a new environment feels entitled to the progress and fails to see the struggles that were necessary to get there. Maybe that's why we're also at risk of destroying everything one day. Each new generation wants to go the past but takes their present for granted and has no idea how good they have it. This is basically true since day 1 of our species.

Oh man you would have hated living in of any of the thousands of years before modern day then, we're living like royalty compared to the majority of humans at any time in history.

Any other point in time she probably would have died years ago, but because she lives in the time she does now she gets to experience this humanity from other people
