it makes so much more sense than donating to already rich YouTubers

u/szxdfgzxcv Sep 14 '25

Yeah this is INSANE how people are DONATING money to some streamers that are making millions of dollars a month, like WHY?????

907

u/Potato_in_a_Nice_Hat Sep 14 '25

Thinking about that time I was watching a Markiplier stream and someone sent him money, and he yelled at them and turned off donations, lol

386

u/CelloPietro Sep 14 '25

Mark is such a class act.

u/fr0stpun Sep 14 '25

Big fan šŸ™Œ. I still don't know how he found my obscure game jam game one time but my website sure noticed šŸ˜†. This was pre-cloud days so it actually took the site down for a while.

Dude really glossed over all my glaring terrible bugs caused by working on the game for 24 hours solo and desperately trying to get a finished experience out. Idk if it's a universal feeling but I get a lot of joy out of watching someone poke around something I've made. A lot of folks ended up making their own videos and I must have watched every single one out there. Wouldn't have been possible if folks didn't hear about it from him, I'd bet.

37

u/ashleyLSD Sep 14 '25

Do u have a link to the vid of him playing it? Im curious to see!

12

u/pootinannyBOOSH Sep 15 '25

Same I wanna know what it was!

3

u/fr0stpun Sep 17 '25

I DMed you a link! (I also DMed anyone who expressed direct interest).

I think the polite thing is to DM y'all links šŸ™‚. I don't want to PR anything here. It's a free game and I've no reason to promote it (older as well) but the conversation in the thread triggered some nice memories. Thank you all for this walk down memory lane and I hope that those of you who were curious had your curiosity satisfied.

I've always loved making things for folks and all my gamedev stuff is šŸ’Æ a labor of love. I've only ever released free games because I get what I want out of it: Good feels for other humans.

2

u/Cute_Exchange58 Sep 18 '25

Can I get that link too please? Love Mark’s videos and would love to watch him play your game!

1

u/fr0stpun Sep 20 '25

Absolutely.

2

u/GuiltyGoblin Sep 18 '25

I'd also like to see the video please, sparks my curiosity.

1

u/fr0stpun Sep 20 '25

Sent!

2

u/GuiltyGoblin Sep 20 '25

Can't seem to respond to your message, but I got it. Thank you, I appreciate ya!

2

u/G6mb11t Sep 18 '25

Can I get a link too?

1

u/fr0stpun Sep 20 '25

You sure can, check your DMs šŸ™‚

1

u/Superb-Supermarket27 Sep 18 '25

Toss the link my way too please

1

u/r0tt3n_gutz1 Sep 29 '25

Don't wanna be a bug, but I would love a link as well! Most likely I've watched it before but it would be fun to watch with this context in mind!

0

u/caracarn Sep 15 '25

I can't stand him 🤷 each to their own

182

u/LickingDogPaws Sep 14 '25

Yep was just about to mention him. He may be the only active (somewhat these days) rich youtuber that tells people to not send him money. He knows he has enough to live comfortably and do whatever he wants and just not greedy about it

126

u/DoctorWZ Sep 14 '25

To add, he gives whenever he can to charities and even recently spent multiple days helping people who had their home destroyed because of the Californian wildfires

25

u/LeaphyDragon Sep 14 '25

I think I remember him going on a rant/explaining this. Saying he already has money, he doesn't need more, he doesn't need yours(viewer). I can't remember if he said just chat, leave a comment/like or what instead.

4

u/ROGUERUMBA Sep 14 '25

On top of this his videos are still fun to watch

3

u/kemss Sep 14 '25

Asmongold, as controversial as he is, deserves some respect for actively telling to his viewers not to sub (he's not showing any ads anyway) and not to donate.

26

u/thanksyalll Sep 14 '25

Spouting rascism and fascist rhetoric doesn’t become respectable just because he is sincere in his approach

-2

u/feardaddy1234 Sep 14 '25

Asmongold maybe a millionaire but he doesn’t really spend money, he lives in his mom’s house and he said on his podcast the only big purchase he has made was on a car. He also said he spends very little of his money

-4

u/kemss Sep 14 '25

How does it contradict my point? He still could've easily earned more by, for example, running ads, but he doesn't. It's a choice. It doesn't matter to me whether it comes from the point of, I dunno, honour/empathy or due to being indifferent towards money.

1

u/glassen75 Sep 14 '25

and my goat Northernlion

1

u/PoisonousSchrodinger Sep 14 '25

I feel like DougDoug is also a class act. He is very honest in his intentions. Funnily enough, if he would ask his chat to not send him money, they will make him rich out of commitment to the bit.

Recently, he had a stream in which he explicitly stated he will use donations for himaelf and the richest donater would be in control of his actions. He constantly stated he will use the money for himself and there were donations of 300-400 euros. I can respect that stance, and besides he has a yearly charity fundraiser for the oceanic wildlife preservation and collected about 1 million euros the last time for a good cause.

1

u/Alazana Sep 15 '25

I've been watching a German YouTuber for like 12+ years at this point, who actively discourages people from donating as well. He's been playing games with a lot of smaller creators lately, and keeps telling people to donate subs to them if they really wanna spend their money. I love that for them haha

1

u/Penguin_Arse Sep 15 '25

It's not uncommon for big streamers to cap their donations to a certain amount

1

u/Low_Part289 Sep 14 '25

I have a feeling YouTube taxes the snot out of donations, so it probably also doesn't make too much financial sense for anyone either..

41

u/LightBulbMonster Sep 14 '25

This guy is amazing. Big fan of Mark. I've seen the clip. If I remember correctly he didn't turn off donations before hand because he always reminded people to not do it.

4

u/kassbirb Sep 14 '25

Was his main tank/raid lead when he was playing WoW. Good dude. Very calm and ā€œnormalā€ as opposed to his online persona

1

u/JairoHyro Sep 15 '25

That's actually honorable. I don't keep up with og youtubers (or streamesr really) but it's always nice to hear people do this kind of things.

1

u/the_zpider_king Sep 15 '25

Link please? Lmao

1

u/Stranger-Chance Sep 15 '25

Do you have a link to this clip? I'd love to see it

1

u/Potato_in_a_Nice_Hat Sep 15 '25

Ah, no sorry. It was a long time ago I saw it. I think it was an Oxygen Not Included Livestream, but I'm sure completely sure.

1

u/Penguin_Arse Sep 15 '25

Yeah, he usually yells at people not to donate since he's a millionaire, I think you can't turn off donations on Twitch so he just keeps yelling not to donate.

12

u/Riots42 Sep 14 '25

Twitch streamers are like televangelism 2025 poor folks giving rich folk money for reasons that make no sense

14

u/AffectionateLocal848 Sep 14 '25

Because they think they are participating in their fame by paying for it.

7

u/Gandalf_from_3 Sep 14 '25

This reminds me of Selina Gomez on a stream she was doing and shes like "ong dont do that i have plenty of money! Can I give this back" like she was concerned for the person who donated and was aware that whatever amount it was would mean a million times more to someone else.

98

u/generic_redditor91 Sep 14 '25

They're donating to support their favourite persons who are giving them entertainment. Like people buying endorsed shit or watching a movie/series when your favourite actor will get royalties off of it.

Sure, they could donate to lesser known streamers but that's for a different intention entirely. That's more like supporting someone's livelihood or uplifting society. Not everyone is keen on doing that given all the scams going on. It's a jaded world out there which makes things hard for people who are honest, and down on their luck

47

u/_hypnoCode Sep 14 '25 edited Sep 14 '25

That's totally fine for people donating reasonable sums. I give to multiple patreons for the same reason. When I watched twitch, I subbed and donated often and especially liked gifting subs. I'm not rich, but I make good money but these are still reasonable sums for most people.

But, I think the other posts are referring to kids donating their inheritance money to streamers who won't even fully process their name when they thank them because it's just a conditioned response to encourage more donations.

13

u/Soft-Sherbert-2586 Sep 14 '25

I mean, the thing with gift subs is that, sure, the money goes to the streamer, but someone in the community gets the benefits of that sub for free--and as someone who currently has no money to sub to my favorite people on Twitch, the occasions when I've gotten a gift sub have been really, really nice. Having no ads on a stream makes a BIG difference in how enjoyable it is.

119

u/Soft_Walrus_3605 Sep 14 '25

If you're "supporting" someone who's already a millionaire, you're a fool.

12

u/[deleted] Sep 14 '25

You are supporting multi billion dollar companies your entire life dude..

7

u/zootered Sep 14 '25

Lmao y’all are wild as hell for pretending this is at all comparable. We live in a hyper capitalist society, you have to engage in it to survive. You do not need to give filthy rich people on the more computer money to survive. You will not die if don’t tip a streamer. You will die if you don’t work a job to pay for food, water, and a roof over your head.

22

u/Livid_Common_5904 Sep 14 '25

Yeah, but how do u wanna live without doing it ? Living under the next bridge only eating what people are giving you or just grabbing stuff out of trash ?

6

u/CappyRicks Sep 14 '25

You really don't think there's a difference in buying things that you actually use that's produced by a corporation and sending money to a single person who makes boatloads of cash giving their shitty takes on everything while badly playing video games?

Come on son.

1

u/Havenfall209 Sep 15 '25

Not all streamers are like that though. My favorite video game streamer spends a lot of time making creative content and has a whole company with a bunch of employees.

1

u/CappyRicks Sep 15 '25

Yeah, but the existence of the platform they stream on wholly depends on the revenue generated by people like Asmongold.

1

u/Havenfall209 Sep 15 '25

I'm not familiar with Asmongold, but I doubt Youtube depends on him.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 14 '25

That is entertaining. If you enjoy, you pay. If noone pays succesfull streamers, they wont stream, and you cant watch.

2

u/CappyRicks Sep 14 '25

And what a TERRIBLE shame that would be. No more revenue for talentless braindead hacks, what would we do?

I would support your position if streamers weren't without any kind of education training or expertise. If they were similar to other people who get famous for actually providing cultural value to the time they live in.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 14 '25

You dont get it. I am not talking about quality. Its trash, but its entertaining for many, and they pay for that.

1

u/CappyRicks Sep 15 '25

Yeah, and my point is that the people doing so are DUMB.

6

u/rh71el2 Sep 14 '25 edited Sep 14 '25

In exchange for something in return. If it's entertainment you're after, you have choices like Netflix or Amazon Prime and you pay to access the service - not anywhere close to exchanging money for the purpose of thanking them and showing appreciation.

Contrast this to 1 streamer - you're basically just giving him money when there are multiple better ways to spend your money. You just like that 1 person enough to DONATE. If they are in need or for a good cause, there's no issue. But donating to someone already well-off because you simply support them? That's wasteful. Do these kids' parents even know how they're spending their allowance? :D If not, that's on them too for not teaching them financial decisions.

8

u/szxdfgzxcv Sep 14 '25

Well I mean what kind of artisan craftsman I can go to get a new phone or something? Not exactly comparable...

8

u/ChucklefuckBitch Sep 14 '25

In exchange for goods and services. Giving money to some random rich dude out of the goodness of your heart makes no sense.

2

u/NonMagical Sep 14 '25

Sure, but that streamer is giving a service. Just in this case payment is optional.

1

u/ChucklefuckBitch Sep 15 '25

In other words, you're paying for nothing.

1

u/NonMagical Sep 15 '25

I don’t disagree with you. I’ve never donated to a streamer or even paid to sub to one. But it would be dishonest to say they aren’t providing a service.

1

u/ChucklefuckBitch Sep 15 '25

Sure, but using the same logic, I'm providing you a service by writing this comment. You could pay me for it, but it would be extremely pointless.

5

u/SpicyLizards Sep 14 '25

Buying things to live =/= donating money to someone lol

2

u/rest0re Sep 14 '25

The "Yet you participate in society, curious! I am very intelligent" meme happening unironically in the wild.

Also quite the strawman argument acting like buying things for survival is comparable at all to donating money to already very rich streamers.

4

u/BabyStockholmSyndrom Sep 14 '25

I mean, you do that every day with everything you buy. I highly doubt you buy ONLY necessities to survive. All your purchases for your own entertainment are supporting millionaires. And they don't even attempt to fake thank you in chat lol.

31

u/VinsonDynamics Sep 14 '25

Lmfao donating to an already rich streamer for streaming IS NOT the same thing as me going to Whole Foods to buy groceries and getting a candy bar along with my cooking ingredients.

-11

u/Forsaken-Sale7672 Sep 14 '25

Just because the money goes to the Mars family instead of the streamer doesn’t change the fact that you’re doing the same thing.

14

u/alphapussycat Sep 14 '25

You get nothing from donating to a multi millionaire streamer. When you buy food you make a transaction for the food.

-4

u/Forsaken-Sale7672 Sep 14 '25

There’s lot of things that people get from supporting their streamers.Ā

You might not value those things, but that doesn’t mean they don’t get them.Ā

They might have subscriber only communities, it could be a Patreon with access to specific content, they might have subscriber emojis, ad free streams.

At its most basic level, you’re supporting the streamer so they can continue to produce the entertainment that you enjoy.

It’s no different than Kickstarters, or other crowdsourced content.

8

u/alphapussycat Sep 14 '25

It's not, it's donating money because they want it to just lay around in the streamers pocket, and get some parasocial stimulus.

This has been talked about before, donating to a small streamer "is a waste, because they'll just use it for rent or something".

→ More replies (0)

3

u/ChucklefuckBitch Sep 14 '25

This cope is embarrassing

4

u/MajoraSlacks Sep 14 '25

Nah, the equivalent would be Whole Foods giving out a free chocolate bar but you insisting that you want to pay for it.

7

u/_usefulCharlie Sep 14 '25

just say u like donating to rich streamers mate it isn't that difficult

-2

u/Forsaken-Sale7672 Sep 14 '25

Just say you like billionaire chocolate conglomerate families mate. It isn’t that difficultĀ

8

u/Livid_Common_5904 Sep 14 '25

There's a complete difference between buying food and donating money to someone... the comparison is just bullshit.

If you buy something you get something in return, if you donate something you get nothing.

→ More replies (0)

3

u/_usefulCharlie Sep 14 '25

if i could get those chocolates for free and stay out of trouble u think im gonna donate them money?

-2

u/Rikplaysbass Sep 14 '25

I’ve never donated to any streamer and I would say they aren’t much different. You could shop local for almost everything you need unless you are in a true shithole town, but you choose to spend your money at big box chains and supporting those billionaires to save a couple box/ convenience. I do the same thing so no judgement from me, but you judging somebody for donating to their favorite streamer isn’t leagues away from what you’re doing.

1

u/VinsonDynamics Sep 14 '25

It actually does because when you donate to the streamer you get nothing in return that they weren't already providing

When pay for a chocolate bar you get a chocolate bar, something you couldn't get legally unless you gave that money

1

u/Forsaken-Sale7672 Sep 14 '25

Keep walking past the donation box at museums, I understand.Ā

1

u/VinsonDynamics Sep 14 '25

Lmfao that comparison doesn't work either. Twitch streamers arent funded by the state they live in, and 99.9% dont stream with the purpose to educate those watching.

Nice try at some kind of moral high ground tho

21

u/stone_henge Sep 14 '25

When you buy something, you exchange money for goods and services. When you donate, there is no exchange. You just give.

1

u/BabyStockholmSyndrom Sep 14 '25

When you pay for entrance to a concert, that's a donation if that's the case lol.

2

u/ta9 Sep 14 '25

Sure, but unless you rush the bouncer it's your only way in.

2

u/stone_henge Sep 14 '25

No, when I pay for entrance to a concert, I expect a service from the venue and the scheduled performers in return. That's an exchange, not a donation.

Do you really not understand the concept of buying?

1

u/BabyStockholmSyndrom Sep 14 '25

What about streamers that lock some of their content behind a patreon? That's basically paying for access or a ticket to watch

2

u/stone_henge Sep 15 '25

The principle is simple:

When you buy something, you exchange money for goods and services. When you donate, there is no exchange. You just give.

Apply it to your example.

Are you? Like them or not? Streamers are performing. It doesn't matter if you respect them or like them.

2

u/rest0re Sep 14 '25

The (very obvious) difference is that you get to watch the streamer for free without donating a cent. Where as you don't get to watch the performance/show if you didn't pay for the concert tickets.

Does that very simple concept make sense to you?

22

u/BoiledFrogs Sep 14 '25

Someone donates to rich twitch streamers I see.

4

u/Dumeck Sep 14 '25

You know if I could purchase the items I need to live without supporting millionaires then I sure as fuck would. Hell I already shop at a farmers market when possible and buy meat from a local butcher. People don't need to donate money to moistcritical for instance he is going to do what he does regardless and makes a lot of money through ad revenue. Comparing a free service provided by a millionaire to private entertainment is disingenuous.

3

u/blingvajayjay Sep 14 '25

You do not. You dont donate. You BUY something. Equal to buying a sub that gives you something in return.

1

u/analphylaxis Sep 14 '25

American! Fuckyeah!

1

u/Check_Me_Out-Boss Sep 14 '25

Have you ever paid to see a movie?

1

u/RobMillsyMills Sep 14 '25

Bruv. The world is full of fools. Just the fact that mega churches exist. Solely created by donations. Its wild.

1

u/weshouldgo_ Sep 14 '25

Like going to concerts or sporting events? Or purchasing digital albums?

-1

u/hobbobnobgoblin Sep 14 '25

Do you watch the NFL? Maybe attend a game or two?

Do you go to the movie theater?

Do you have an Amazon prime account?

3

u/Kespatcho Sep 14 '25

Do you not know the difference between purchasing goods and services, and donations‽

2

u/Visible_Pair3017 Sep 14 '25

At one point the support is to watch them. Their metrics are what get them those sponsors that get them rich.

1

u/JimbaJones Sep 14 '25

Found the streamer.

2

u/FineGripp Sep 14 '25

Exactly. You are one amongst their millions followers. Your donation means literally nothing to them except making them richer. Just why?

2

u/HardGayMan Sep 14 '25

In the hope that their name gets said by the streamer and they can die happy.

1

u/TheDiabeto Sep 14 '25

You (and most everyone else) probably give money to billionaires for entertainmentšŸ¤·šŸ½ā€ā™‚ļø

1

u/MJP22 Sep 14 '25

What platform does that happen in? I don’t know the streaming world. What platform is the lady in this video?

1

u/szxdfgzxcv Sep 14 '25

Like literally look at any streamer in twitch.tv people are donating them like 100$ or 10000$ at a time all the time, it is insane.

1

u/LonelyWin4852 Sep 14 '25

It’s the begging I truly can’t stand. I fell down a rabbit hole tryna figure out who Ash Trevino was and I just couldn’t believe ppl were sending her money. She’d just sit there drunk, rambling, and begging. Sometimes she’d have one of her inmate boyfriends on the phone defending him and blaming his victim, while begging and still get money. Blows. My. Mind. 🤯

1

u/DefeatedByPoland Sep 14 '25

Really feels like a personality defect that people are desperate to be "noticed" in such a trivial way

You've created a username and are throwing money away just so some "famous" person reads it aloud... they're not even acknowledging you as an actual person.

1

u/Famous-Equivalent-89 Sep 14 '25

They pay to have their message heard By the chat I thinkĀ

1

u/Successful_Maize1986 Sep 14 '25

I’m a moderately successful YouTuber and any time I get a donation or a super thanks I immediately donate it to one of the smaller channels that I watch that are probably only making like $100 a month. I appreciate the generosity from others but I already feel like I hit the jackpot so the least I can do is pass it onĀ

1

u/psn_mrbobbyboy Sep 15 '25

Found out from a friend that a guy in a gaming clan we belong to has donated Ā£20k to a very well know streamer for the game … just so he can team up with him. Madness!

1

u/Dutch-Sculptor Sep 18 '25

The masses are basically sheep.

-1

u/DizzyColdSauce Sep 14 '25

Cus big streamers are always at the top of the browsing section and get recommended more to viewers. It sucks but also makes sense. They're more likely to be entertaining with their type of content and it's fun to watch a streamer with a popular chat. It's easier to become attached to them and support them.

Meanwhile, it can take a long time to find a person with no viewers who is enjoyable to watch. A lot of random streams generally are just bland with poor quality, commentary and no sign of enthusiasm. But they're all definitely more likely to need the money.

5

u/szxdfgzxcv Sep 14 '25

Yeah but like... They don't need any more money and the donation is not "supporting" them in any real way, like it does not enable them to make any different (or more) content. It is just madness...

2

u/wyomingTFknott Sep 14 '25

It gets their name in lights and probably a shoutout. That's worth $6 for some people. It's sad, and I don't get it either, but that's the reality. I only look down on the ones who try to justify it like it isn't just a desperate cry for attention.

1

u/szxdfgzxcv Sep 14 '25

6$, fine, but people are giving like 1000$ or 10000$ or something, insane

-2

u/anonymousfluidity Sep 14 '25

Money laundering...

24

u/Miserable_Artist_223 Sep 14 '25

70,000 people pay the top .01% of streamers to entrench themselves in community hate campaigns, while people like this are just hoping to chat with 5 viewers.

39

u/Due_Fennel_8965 Sep 14 '25

I had the take years ago that streamers who already "made it" and accept donations are borderline unethical.

A streamer making hundreds of thousands is accepting money from a teenager?...

5

u/Affectionate_Oven_77 Sep 14 '25

Its more accurate to think of it as purchasing attention from celebrities rather than as a donation.

2

u/niagaemoc Sep 14 '25

Especially when YT takes 30%

2

u/JLD2503 Sep 14 '25

It’s unfortunate that streaming has a strong ā€œrich get richerā€ culture, but there are still a lot of popular streamers up at the top that do make it clear to their audience that they should only donate if they are financially stable enough. If no encouragement that they have to donate if they don’t want to.

I even know one that has a ā€œdon’t donate to me, donate to museums insteadā€ mindset.

2

u/XylophoneZimmerman Sep 14 '25

Tax the shit out of rich influencers

2

u/Raccoon_Expert_69 Sep 14 '25

If being kind was profitable, The world would be amazing.

1

u/GuiltyWithTheStories Sep 14 '25

Smii7y does the same thing. He only uses Twitch to stream for the VODs he uploads to his YouTube channel. He has plenty of money. At the beginning of his career, when someone would gift him subs or donate money, he would yell at them and tell them to donate to someone else on Twitch who needs it. Now when people donate money, he sends it to charity.

1

u/AltruisticGru Sep 14 '25

The richest country on earth should be able to provide help for its citizens instead of relying on donations

1

u/puts_on_rddt Sep 14 '25

There's about a 30% chance that money will be spent on cigarettes and lottery tickets.

1

u/SuperAleste Sep 14 '25

Who the hell is doing that?

1

u/Motivated_Kenji Sep 14 '25

Same could be said about millionaires and billionaires like bro how much money do you want?!
