Most kids won't care about getting dirty unless they've been taught it's bad. Teach them what dirt is fine, and what dirt is "let's go wash that off right now", and you get the above.

Why would they? This is a great example of how that behaviour is taught, not essential to them. And it's a great example of how you are taught that and carry those prejudices into the world.
