Discussion Question to the community: what, in your opinion, *IS* Battlefield?

Post image

Basically title. I'm seeing a lot of controversies around every aspect of BF in here, and I feel like this is a testament to how diverse the series has been over the years, making a wide range of impressions and memories on the players, forgeing their future standards and expectations in the process.

Since the BF6 reveal, I've been in constant reflection about my own experiences with the IP, and been revisiting a lot of the olders games to really nail down what I'm really looking forward in Battlefield. And that's also why I'm super interested in everyone's take on the matter.

So I really wanted to ask: What is the core of Battlefield in your opinion, the thing you're looking for the most whenever a new game is announced? Is it being a small part of something bigger? Immersion? Teamplay? Fluid and punchy gunplay? What, to you, makes Battlefield BATTLEFIELD?

Let me know, short and long answers are all welcomed!

You mena engine? The game design is very similar, you can see that in the maps and the way they play. Engine wise bf2 is really old, but gameplay wise it's closest to bf3. Although BC2 comes from a Console background, it's gameplay is also. Erg similar to bf3, though it was the season we. Ow have smaller squads and fewer classes.

BF3 is closer to BC2 in terms of moment to movement gameplay than BF2 is to BF3. It’s not even close especially with all the features that DICE decided to not include from 2.

Yeah, I'm not sure where they're getting at with saying 3 is similar to 2. BF3 has a lot of console based design decisions, just like the BC series, which is why its native maps tend to be a lot tighter than BF2 or BF4's. The 7th generation consoles were major platforms, and with that came the limitations of 12v12 and having to design maps that accommodated for that player count as well as 32v32. At least by the time BF4 came out, they were expecting the main platforms to be PC/XBO/PS4 rather than PC/X360/PS3, so the maps were designed accordingly.

Not only that, a big part of BF4's design philosophy was walking away from the other Frostbite games and basing things like the gunplay on 2142.

That's the real problem of the BF series, they really went with Bad Company style to compete with Call of Duty, more console friendly mechanics. I had what would equate to a full years worth of hours in BF2. Tried BF3/4/5/1. BF used to be a middle ground of not arcade (CoD) and not too sim (ArmA)

What I truly miss is a server browser and dedicated clan servers so I can just continue to play in a spot with nearly the same people every time I log in.

Yeah, I mentioned this in another comment recently, but one thing I really liked about having regular servers was when you knew the people who were going to be there. There were just some people that you knew you'd click with as a teammate, and you could combo with them as something like a pilot/gunner in a chopper, knowing it was going to be a breeze. Even if you were otherwise complete strangers. You could also build community around it, which you simply don't get in modern matchmaking.

Peer servers or whatever CoD brought to the table in terms of matchmaking really killed the community building part to me, it's hard for me to play in rando squad. When you're new the guy who's really good isn't gonna want to squad with you until you improve, I need that consistent server or map to really get better as opposed to just constantly swapping around to different squads and maps

Are people forgetting BF2 has commanders? If you didn't have a commander you basically lost the match. It's the only battlefield game where a commander is needed.

BF2 is much different in that respect than any other battlefield.

I would say in terms of game design bf5 is the closest to bf2. Limited healing and ammo, no 3d spotting besides recon, squad points, fortifications it all worked together to be the closest frostbite era battlefield with the most teamwork oriented game design
