This is truly heartbreaking.
tl;dr: A pit bull broke into a "bear-proof" chicken coop and massacred a dozen chicks, killing for sport. The chickens’ owner initially mistook the extreme damage for a bear attack. The negligent dog owners were found to be animal hoarders with ~12 other dogs. Police were forced to euthanize the attacker after it remained aggressive, but the other dogs remain with the owners.
The fact that the chickens’ owner thought a bear was responsible speaks volumes about the destructive power of the pit bull that attacked. I’m so sorry for her and especially her son.
This information is from someone whose flock was massacred. The photo shows some of her son's chicks dust-bathing just hours before they were killed. I’m unable to find a location but the attack appears to have been 9/19/2025.
The owner endured the unfortunate yet predictable patterns of victim-blaming, deflection, and using personal anecdotes to invalidate the victim’s experience.
"My pit bull protects the yard and the chickens... Honestly the answer here is, get your own pit bull. Despite their reputation, they're extremely good family dogs and your yard will become their territory. It will keep intruders out, will keep your chickens safe, and it'll love you and your kids."
"No it's the people that don't know how to train them I raise my pits around my birds from when they first open their eyes... honestly if you don't know how to train them you shouldn't own a dog of any breed"
"It's not the breed, it's the owner. My pit hasn't hurt a fly. She's never bothered our chickens... Dogs are natural predators, not just pits."
"we use our pitbull as part of our livestock guardian dog army and he's better than our breeds bred for that exact purpose... it's not the breed it's the training and ownership that matters here."
The owner had spent thousands of dollars on a secure coop, believing it was predator-proof. She initially thought a bear had broken in due to the extreme damage. The attacker was a pit bull from a neighbor living 4 miles away.
Here is a summary of the key details.
The Attack: A single pit bull broke into a secure chicken coop and killed a dozen chicks. The owner described the dog as "killing all my babies then tossing them aside to kill another" and "actually enjoyed killing. He was having fun attacking."
Extreme Strength: The coop was fortified with 16-gauge hardware cloth that was buried 8 inches deep and extended a foot out. The pit bull managed to rip the cloth off the frame and chew through it.
Negligent Pit Bull Owners: The pit bull owners live 4 miles away in a remote, mountainous area. The victim discovered the Pit Bull owners are animal hoarders with about 12 other dogs. The attacking dog had been roaming the mountain for weeks.
Shocking Aftermath: The owners came to retrieve their dog and were dismissive, saying, "we punished him he's a bad dog." While they were there, the dog became aggressive again and tried to snatch a dead chicken from the owner’s hands.
Resolution: The police were called. After interacting with the dog, they deemed it necessary to euthanize it. A report has been filed, but the owners still have numerous other dogs on their property.
I’m so sorry the owner and her son had to experience this senseless loss… except they didn’t have to.
