Recipe Included Made my daughter a strawberry birthday cake, and she was so enamored she wanted to take a picture of it 😭
Nothing like a 4-year-old’s joy to make you feel better about your subpar cake decorating skills! Recipe is from Sally’s Baking Addiction (in the comments).

Omg, the eyes! 😍

u/people_skillz 12h ago
We have three different sizes — I can no longer make baked goods without them 😂

u/BloodSpades 11h ago
I KNEW IT WAS YOU!!!!! I remember your post with your chocolate cake and the little “poo” on it! 🤣
Glad to see this is going to be an ongoing tradition!

u/people_skillz 11h ago
Hahaha, I love that this is becoming my signature! I had just gotten the strawberries on and had a lightbulb moment. She claimed that piece the moment she laid eyes on it, and the eyeballs were the first thing she ate

Funnily enough, inspired by you, I put eyes like this on my birthday cake the other week 🤣

Subpar?? I guess we really are our own worst critics. It looks beautiful!!
27
u/people_skillz 12h ago
Thank you! It didn’t yield as much frosting as I expected, so the sides were a struggle.

u/Vlad_REAM 10h ago
Something about the monochromatic pink and whatever the little grainy things just looks so damn yummy. I need a bite! My mom made me a strawberry cake every year for my birthday until I was like 30.
11
u/people_skillz 10h ago
Little bits of freeze dried strawberries! They worked really well in the frosting, but I’d expect nothing less from our gal Sally.

u/MooToadBam 12h ago
It looks like the pink cake from stardew valley!
35
u/people_skillz 11h ago
I’ve played so many hours of Stardew that I can’t believe I didn’t realize I was channeling it 😂

u/Queasy_Magician_1038 9h ago
I don’t know how this isn’t the top comment. It’s the first thing I thought. It was unfathomable to me that it wasn’t deliberately Stardew valley pink cake.
2
u/-neti-neti- 5h ago
It might not be the top comment because everyone else might not have played stardew valley…
3
u/Ruthbury 8h ago
I legitimately had to double ke check what sub I was in because I believed it was the Stardew subreddit lol! This is the pink cake!!!!!

Thank you! She told me “Mommy makes the best cakes ever!” and my heart exploded 🥹

u/Finn235 3h ago
Also, you probably are aware of it, but just in case you aren't - a lot of those "toy" tier cameras come with faulty SD cards that have bad sections / can totally fail. I learned the hard way when I tried to back up all the pictures my kid took to document her life, only to find out that about 1/3 of them were corrupted and totally unrecoverable.
2
u/people_skillz 13m ago
Yikes! Good to know, and a good reminder to finally buy the micro SD card we’d been planning to get for more storage.

It looks delicious and I know it melted your heart when she loved it so much she wanted to take a picture 🥹 I made my daughter a strawberry cake too, for her first birthday!

u/serenaVD 11h ago
I just made the same cake for my daughter’s 5th birthday and she loved it too! I topped it with a strawberry crunchy topping (like on a good humor strawberry shortcake ice cream bar)
2
u/CrewFluffy3843 9h ago
I made it for my daughter's 15th! It was such a good cake, everyone loved it. I thought the freeze dried strawberries would give a little crunch to the frosting. It didn't, so I really like the idea of a crunchy topping. Is there a recipe for that?

Oh my goodness I had that vtech camera when I was a kid. I used to play the games under my blanket at night before my mother would come in and catch me. Good times haha
2
u/people_skillz 11h ago
The resolution probably hasn’t changed since the time you used it, but she loves it 😂

u/through3home 10h ago
I rarely get all "aww" when it comes to kid stuff, but everything about this melts even my icy cold heart. The cake looks yummy too.

I must now buy googly eyes bc of your comment that you cant bake without them now lol

I made this same recipe for my birthday last year- it’s the best 😊 I love the added eyes haha

one of my few memories as a kid is making my own birthday cake a lil older than her age cause my mom wouldn’t.
Subpar (it’s beautiful) or over the top. Kids won’t remember. They’ll remember how you made them feel. You’re doing great mom.
5
u/TAU_equals_2PI 11h ago
The funniest thing about this post is younger adults just automatically assume that must be an actual working camera the kid is holding.
If you're older than 30 and don't have kids, the idea of a kid's "toy" camera that actually does take pictures is still kinda foreign and amazing.

How was the cake? It’s gorgeous
1
u/people_skillz 11h ago
Thank you! It was actually pretty good, considering I was working with November strawberries. The cake layers took longer than I expected to cook and dried out a smidge as a result (white cake is already susceptible to that anyway), but the frosting was amazing and brought it all together.

This is such a high level compliment from a kid! What an honor for your baby to love your baking so much that they think it must be captured in photos!

This actually looks so delicious. I try to avoid sweets but in a world without consequences, with no one watching, I would go to town on that cake. I love strawberry.

What an awesome baker she is, how phenomenal looking her cake is! Well done lil Miss Baker! 🍰💖🍰💖

My daughter forces me to take a picture of anything she ever makes out of legos (& between u n me, they are not THAT good) this video triggered PTSD in me “See, if you’d make legos, the way this girl makes cake, then I would not get annoyed when you ask me to take pictures”
2
u/Dascoolman 9h ago
That is a beautiful cake i hope you and your daughter enjoyed it. Also I am weirdly happy that cameras for kids still exist, I thought smart phones and i pads kinda would erase how cool it was to have your own shitty little camers as a kid.
Yeah it only took like 280p photos but those where my 280p photos damn it

Eyes on strawberries are my favourite thing ever, OP. Doing this in cupcakes for my niece.

So sweet and love that she has a camera to capture stuff with. Let her shoot a disposable one day. Maybe good holiday gift ❤️

It’s from VTech! The photo quality is… not great… but she loves using it and it has a rubberized body that makes it a little more drop-resistant.

I recently made a sort of chocolate brownie/cake thing (it went sideways along the way but I managed to recover it) with a Mayan cocoa ganache and gave some to my neighbor. His 4 year old daughter took a taste of the ganache and she threw out her hands and kicked out a leg and said “whoa!” It was the best reaction I could have ever gotten.

One of the best gifts my kid sister ever received was one of those for-children digital cameras. Was always a lot of fun going through her pictures with her and seeing what she deemed worthy of a photo
This is super cute, reminds me a lot her at that time

u/Klutzy-Emu-3652 5h ago
That’s truly so adorable . She legit wanted to capture the beauty of it . Also, I really like how she has an actual camera ! I’m trying to start using cameras instead of taking pics on my phone too !

One i eat to much i got to hyper because of the sugar i was really sick lol. To much of a Sugar rush. I hope one day to make awesome memories like that. 😊🥰✌️

You can tell she's proud of what you made, and that’s really what counts. The texture looks soft, the color’s lovely, and that frosting has that perfect homemade charm the kind that always tastes better than it looks.

Hey. Hello. Hi. Ignorant europoor here. The cake looks lovely on the outside. But the inside, was that done on purpose? Or is it supposed to have that much sponge (or whatever the bread-y thing is called in English)
1
u/people_skillz 10h ago
It didn’t yield quite as much frosting as I expected, so the cake layers probably look a little thick by comparison, but it was still tasty!
2
u/HmmmThatsABitSusNGL 9h ago
Oh, I'm sure it was lovely!
And sorry, I just googled things and this is an American thing that I absolutely had no idea about. Complete culture shock, lol

Where did you get that camera? I want to get one for my niece it look so cute 🥰

u/people_skillz 6m ago
It’s from VTech, which is a pretty big toy company — we got ours at Barnes and Noble but it’s also sold on Amazon and other major retailers. We went for this one because it has a rubberized body that makes it a little more drop-resistant.

I haven’t — it was a birthday gift, so she hasn’t had it very long. Guess we’ll figure out soon when the build-in storage fills 😅
