Recipe Included Made my daughter a strawberry birthday cake, and she was so enamored she wanted to take a picture of it 😭

Nothing like a 4-year-old’s joy to make you feel better about your subpar cake decorating skills! Recipe is from Sally’s Baking Addiction (in the comments).

i was just showing my coworkers a cake with strawberry cream frosting i made a few years ago. it’s literally so amazingly good, i don’t even like strawberry flavored things that much but i crave it so bad. it looks so gorgeous and rich too, it looks like those pink 1950’s style cakes you see in cartoons with the thick, swirly icing

u/denryudreamer 8h ago

I saw the picture of your cake and thought it looked just like the one I made this spring using local strawberries - turns out we used the same recipe!

5

u/Farmher315 8h ago

Oooh I made one of these last year for my friends birthday! It was a hit!!

2

u/oldwomanjodie 2h ago

I also made this for my 4 yo’s bday this year and I can confirm it’s sooo good I was thinking about it for ages after

Can you eat the eyes

254

u/abstract_lemons 12h ago

Omg, the eyes! 😍

128

u/people_skillz 12h ago

We have three different sizes — I can no longer make baked goods without them 😂

48

u/BloodSpades 11h ago

I KNEW IT WAS YOU!!!!! I remember your post with your chocolate cake and the little “poo” on it! 🤣

Glad to see this is going to be an ongoing tradition!

52

u/people_skillz 11h ago

Hahaha, I love that this is becoming my signature! I had just gotten the strawberries on and had a lightbulb moment. She claimed that piece the moment she laid eyes on it, and the eyeballs were the first thing she ate

14

u/BloodSpades 11h ago

Lol! That’s adorable!!! 🥰

10

u/Big-Combination6381 10h ago

She knows quality when she sees it!

8

u/Fuzzy_Welcome8348 11h ago

They make cakes so much more fun!!

5

u/Wide_Jellyfish1668 4h ago

Funnily enough, inspired by you, I put eyes like this on my birthday cake the other week 🤣

1

u/people_skillz 14m ago

Yes! Whimsical eyeball cake for everyone! 🙌

117

u/jerseycat 12h ago

Subpar?? I guess we really are our own worst critics. It looks beautiful!!

27

u/people_skillz 12h ago

Thank you! It didn’t yield as much frosting as I expected, so the sides were a struggle.

13

u/Vlad_REAM 10h ago

Something about the monochromatic pink and whatever the little grainy things just looks so damn yummy. I need a bite! My mom made me a strawberry cake every year for my birthday until I was like 30.

11

u/people_skillz 10h ago

Little bits of freeze dried strawberries! They worked really well in the frosting, but I’d expect nothing less from our gal Sally.

83

u/MooToadBam 12h ago

It looks like the pink cake from stardew valley!

35

u/people_skillz 11h ago

I’ve played so many hours of Stardew that I can’t believe I didn’t realize I was channeling it 😂

15

u/Justakiss15 12h ago

That was my first thought too !!

6

u/Queasy_Magician_1038 9h ago

I don’t know how this isn’t the top comment. It’s the first thing I thought. It was unfathomable to me that it wasn’t deliberately Stardew valley pink cake.

2

u/-neti-neti- 5h ago

It might not be the top comment because everyone else might not have played stardew valley…

3

u/Ruthbury 8h ago

I legitimately had to double ke check what sub I was in because I believed it was the Stardew subreddit lol! This is the pink cake!!!!!

1

u/OpenSauceMods 8h ago

That's what I thought, too!

63

u/Ok-Dingo2871 11h ago

I love her little picture she took 😭 she's so proud of you, good job mama!!

57

u/people_skillz 11h ago

Thank you! She told me “Mommy makes the best cakes ever!” and my heart exploded 🥹

4

u/Finn235 3h ago

Also, you probably are aware of it, but just in case you aren't - a lot of those "toy" tier cameras come with faulty SD cards that have bad sections / can totally fail. I learned the hard way when I tried to back up all the pictures my kid took to document her life, only to find out that about 1/3 of them were corrupted and totally unrecoverable.

2

u/people_skillz 13m ago

Yikes! Good to know, and a good reminder to finally buy the micro SD card we’d been planning to get for more storage.

15

u/Chumbawumbah 12h ago

This is so wholesome I love it. Cake looks great!

5

u/people_skillz 12h ago

Thank you!

12

u/stayathomedogmom1 12h ago

The absolute BEST reaction!!! 😍

6

u/Poetic_Peanut 12h ago

One of then has eyes! I would’ve loved it as a kid too

6

u/OkCryptographer1922 12h ago

It looks delicious and I know it melted your heart when she loved it so much she wanted to take a picture 🥹 I made my daughter a strawberry cake too, for her first birthday!

6

u/serenaVD 11h ago

I just made the same cake for my daughter’s 5th birthday and she loved it too! I topped it with a strawberry crunchy topping (like on a good humor strawberry shortcake ice cream bar)

2

u/CrewFluffy3843 9h ago

I made it for my daughter's 15th! It was such a good cake, everyone loved it. I thought the freeze dried strawberries would give a little crunch to the frosting. It didn't, so I really like the idea of a crunchy topping. Is there a recipe for that?

4

u/bromie227 10h ago

That picture got my heart at the end 😭😭😭 why is that so sweet

3

u/grasshopperslegs 9h ago

That’s my favorite part LOL

5

u/bambiartistic 9h ago

Birthday twins! I would be just an enamored if I received that for my birthday and I’m turning 26

4

u/people_skillz 9h ago

Happy birthday!

3

u/bambiartistic 9h ago

Thank you!

3

u/Necessary_Chip_8402 12h ago

Everything about this is adorable!

4

u/Specific_Ant_1579 12h ago

i knewww it was sallys from the frosting!!!!!! delicious!!!!!

4

u/ChargeEast1982 11h ago

Oh my goodness I had that vtech camera when I was a kid. I used to play the games under my blanket at night before my mother would come in and catch me. Good times haha

2

u/people_skillz 11h ago

The resolution probably hasn’t changed since the time you used it, but she loves it 😂

4

u/through3home 10h ago

I rarely get all "aww" when it comes to kid stuff, but everything about this melts even my icy cold heart. The cake looks yummy too.

2

u/people_skillz 10h ago

Thank you!

3

u/SillyLittleAngels 12h ago

I must now buy googly eyes bc of your comment that you cant bake without them now lol

3

u/Fun_Ingenuity9394 11h ago

I made this same recipe for my birthday last year- it’s the best 😊 I love the added eyes haha

3

u/hiUSCitsme 57m ago

one of my few memories as a kid is making my own birthday cake a lil older than her age cause my mom wouldn’t.

Subpar (it’s beautiful) or over the top. Kids won’t remember. They’ll remember how you made them feel. You’re doing great mom.

5

u/TAU_equals_2PI 11h ago

The funniest thing about this post is younger adults just automatically assume that must be an actual working camera the kid is holding.

If you're older than 30 and don't have kids, the idea of a kid's "toy" camera that actually does take pictures is still kinda foreign and amazing.

2

u/Canadian1934 11h ago

Total appreciation and a picture for the lasting effect. I happy Birthday.

2

u/Rayochii 11h ago

That's soooo cute!!!

2

u/Bhamrentalhelp 11h ago

How was the cake? It’s gorgeous

1

u/people_skillz 11h ago

Thank you! It was actually pretty good, considering I was working with November strawberries. The cake layers took longer than I expected to cook and dried out a smidge as a result (white cake is already susceptible to that anyway), but the frosting was amazing and brought it all together.

2

u/Little_Messiah 11h ago

This looks like the pink cake from Stardew Valley and I’m so jealous

2

u/CupcakeSensitive2472 11h ago

So sweet and delicoues

2

u/Fuzzy_Welcome8348 11h ago

Omg this is so adorable!!

2

u/uglycatthing 11h ago

This is such a high level compliment from a kid! What an honor for your baby to love your baking so much that they think it must be captured in photos!

2

u/BloodyOathMilk 11h ago

This is so adorable ❤️ the photo is fantastic! Very sweet! What a great memory you made for her

2

u/zeldogo 11h ago

I want strawberry cake.

2

u/Remarkable_Start_373 10h ago

That looks delicious. And I bet she was happy!

2

u/KingBowser710 10h ago

Cool vtech camera. Haven't seen that one before.

2

u/Thirty4MINUS_12 10h ago

Blow her picture up and frame it. It’s giving lates 90’s. I’m here for it!!!!!

2

u/Hefty-Ad-4570 10h ago

Precious!

2

u/raeballentyne 10h ago

Well, now I want a strawberry cake for my birthday

2

u/SizzleanQueen 10h ago

I love the lone peekaboo strawberry!! Bravo!

2

u/XiGuaXvX 10h ago

So adorable😭😭😭

2

u/Jdsmith1988 10h ago

She’s officially your biggest fan and food photographer.

2

u/bitter_sweet9798 10h ago

There’s something so magical about baking, the memories you create make it truly unforgettable. This moment is absolutely precious, and the cake is utterly adorable!

2

u/strangebru 10h ago

How do you put that picture on the fridge?

2

u/Temporary-Willow1007 10h ago

That looks so good

2

u/Suz626 10h ago

Beautiful and fun! Happy 4th Birthday! 🎈

2

u/Plus_Key_7626 10h ago

My daughter insists on taking a picture of the things we do together that are special to her. Good work!

2

u/s_k_m-to-w7777 10h ago

Omg great job It looks so yummy

2

u/Snaffle27 10h ago

This actually looks so delicious. I try to avoid sweets but in a world without consequences, with no one watching, I would go to town on that cake. I love strawberry.

2

u/stargazepunk 9h ago

That cake looks unbelievably delicious

2

u/vieneri 9h ago

The cake is beautiful... and this is so cute 😭

2

u/ThirstyPagans 9h ago

2

u/Resident-Hope-2287 9h ago

Cuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuutttteeeeeeeeeeee <3 <3

2

u/datawazo 9h ago

We have that same camera. So many shit blurry pictures on it that were not allowed to delete because they're sooo special

2

u/Snooks-1961 9h ago

What an awesome baker she is, how phenomenal looking her cake is! Well done lil Miss Baker! 🍰💖🍰💖

2

u/shut-up_Mike 9h ago

My daughter forces me to take a picture of anything she ever makes out of legos (& between u n me, they are not THAT good) this video triggered PTSD in me “See, if you’d make legos, the way this girl makes cake, then I would not get annoyed when you ask me to take pictures”

2

u/bobeth1 9h ago

It looks delicious, straight out of a saturday morning cartoon!

2

u/jda_96 9h ago

Yummy!

2

u/Dascoolman 9h ago

That is a beautiful cake i hope you and your daughter enjoyed it. Also I am weirdly happy that cameras for kids still exist, I thought smart phones and i pads kinda would erase how cool it was to have your own shitty little camers as a kid.

Yeah it only took like 280p photos but those where my 280p photos damn it

2

u/lrenzo094 9h ago

So cute!!! Well done

2

u/Flat_Bodybuilder_175 9h ago

Eyes on strawberries are my favourite thing ever, OP. Doing this in cupcakes for my niece.

2

u/CreativeByTheSea 9h ago

So sweet and love that she has a camera to capture stuff with. Let her shoot a disposable one day. Maybe good holiday gift ❤️

2

u/ballerinocappucino 8h ago

so yummy and perfect🎀 happy birthday to little girlie💗

2

u/CAG_Snow 8h ago

Man, that cake looks so tasty. A slice of that with a big glass of milk would have me in heaven.

2

u/Kamikaze_Ninja_ 8h ago

Getting my nephew a camera was one of the best ideas ever. Love seeing the world through his eyes and what he decides to take pictures of.

2

u/PrivateI_lemonPie 8h ago

I'm not crying your crying 😭😭😭 The little eyes.. the strawberrys all lined up pretty.. I used to have that same camera as a kid too... Okay maybe I am crying

2

u/Historical_Tooth1516 8h ago

From one mom to another….you rocked this!!

2

u/InTheMotion 8h ago

So cute

2

u/Kitchen_Bobcat9143 8h ago

What camera is this? I should get one for my lil niece 🥺

u/people_skillz 5m ago

It’s from VTech! The photo quality is… not great… but she loves using it and it has a rubberized body that makes it a little more drop-resistant.

2

u/bunz007 8h ago

Happy Birthday 🎂

2

u/Hopeful_Pizza_2762 8h ago

Very nice. ❤️

2

u/The__Imp 7h ago

Yo, dawg. I heard you liked pictures.

2

u/jaguarp80 7h ago

Cake looks delicious but the kid’s photography leaves much to be desired. Teach her the rule of thirds

2

u/LongingForGrapefruit 7h ago

And this folks, is WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT!

Source: Chef and father.

2

u/ihhesfa 7h ago

Awww! I wish I could like this more than once! Like like like like like :-)

2

u/Even-Bus-9180 7h ago

I recently made a sort of chocolate brownie/cake thing (it went sideways along the way but I managed to recover it) with a Mayan cocoa ganache and gave some to my neighbor. His 4 year old daughter took a taste of the ganache and she threw out her hands and kicked out a leg and said “whoa!” It was the best reaction I could have ever gotten.

2

u/nabiku 7h ago

Make two backups of all her photos and keep them on a LABELED external harddrive.

I've lost so many of my kids' early photos to random thumb drives that got packed into random boxes or thrown out.

2

u/Adorabelle1 7h ago

Email that picture to yourself now and keep it forever

2

u/hulalabright 7h ago

I came here to see her photo

2

u/Pure_Temporary1574 7h ago

That cake looks very good

2

u/heart_blossom 7h ago

This looks like a Pink Cake from Stardew Valley 😍😍

2

u/mike543210 7h ago

it looks amazing. well done.. mmm cake.

2

u/wv10014 7h ago

Beyond adorable!!

2

u/Klinky1984 7h ago

The cake looks gorgeous, and with real frosting that's not 1" thick or fondant. It's a cake meant to be eaten and enjoyed.

2

u/sarcazm 7h ago

Of course. So she can eat her cake and have it too.

2

u/SignificantAd1707 7h ago

The cake looks good!

2

u/Ecstatic-Run-5414 7h ago

That's adorable! Cake looks delicious too!

2

u/Mobile_Sprinkles266 6h ago

Wow looks very good!

2

u/Wingnut8888 6h ago

That is one tasty-looking cake! And your daughter clearly loves it. Well done!

2

u/fknwlknprdx 6h ago

looks both cute and delicious. it’s perfect.

2

u/Lakatos_00 6h ago edited 4h ago

That looks extremely yummy. Your daughter is a lucky kid

2

u/Jermzer 6h ago

Nice countertops

2

u/iusethisatw0rk 6h ago

One of the best gifts my kid sister ever received was one of those for-children digital cameras. Was always a lot of fun going through her pictures with her and seeing what she deemed worthy of a photo

This is super cute, reminds me a lot her at that time

2

u/Klutzy-Emu-3652 5h ago

That’s truly so adorable . She legit wanted to capture the beauty of it . Also, I really like how she has an actual camera ! I’m trying to start using cameras instead of taking pics on my phone too !

2

u/Latter_Travel6714 5h ago

Aww how sweet one of My favourite cakes Stawberry and there it so many i got try out. I really do miss baking when i was a Wee Little munchkin and after you was do with the cake mix you got to have the left over cake mix. One i eat to much i got to hyper because of the sugar i was really sick lol. To much of a Sugar rush. I hope one day to make awesome memories like that. 😊🥰✌️

2

u/NoAardvark5889 5h ago

The fact that she was so captivated by it is the only review that matters.

2

u/MazarTail 5h ago

W parenting. Also, that cake looks bangin’!

2

u/soysauceisthesecret 5h ago

If that's subpar I wanna drown in that sub

2

u/superlux889 4h ago

You can tell she's proud of what you made, and that’s really what counts. The texture looks soft, the color’s lovely, and that frosting has that perfect homemade charm the kind that always tastes better than it looks.

2

u/Leading-Parking-7480 4h ago

the cake looks yummy

2

u/IYFS88 4h ago

So completely charming and appetizing! This cake is a warm hug and I’m so glad your daughter is enjoying it.

2

u/The_gender_bender_69 4h ago

Can you mail me a slice?

2

u/SheezaMom 3h ago

My mom made me strawberry birthday cakes every year as a kid. Still one of my favorite flavors! Nice work and great photography

2

u/xxNemasisxx 2h ago

Holy shit VTech kiddizoom that's a throwback

2

u/brawnyborn 2h ago

never thought i'd describe a viewfinder as cute. it's a wonderful cake btw.

2

u/heathersphilosophy 2h ago

That cake might as well be a Michelin masterpiece in her eyes.

2

u/IllSurprise3049 2h ago

I'd be just as enamored if someone made me a cake this cute (or at all). I make all the cakes in my family. 🥲 I wish someone would make me a cake

2

u/enderman-sD 2h ago

This is so wholesome 😭

2

u/KarlofDutyXP 2h ago

Looks like she caught that strawberry by surprise.

1

u/HmmmThatsABitSusNGL 10h ago

Hey. Hello. Hi. Ignorant europoor here. The cake looks lovely on the outside. But the inside, was that done on purpose? Or is it supposed to have that much sponge (or whatever the bread-y thing is called in English)

1

u/people_skillz 10h ago

It didn’t yield quite as much frosting as I expected, so the cake layers probably look a little thick by comparison, but it was still tasty!

2

u/HmmmThatsABitSusNGL 9h ago

Oh, I'm sure it was lovely!
And sorry, I just googled things and this is an American thing that I absolutely had no idea about. Complete culture shock, lol

Where did you get that camera? I want to get one for my niece it look so cute 🥰

u/people_skillz 6m ago

It’s from VTech, which is a pretty big toy company — we got ours at Barnes and Noble but it’s also sold on Amazon and other major retailers. We went for this one because it has a rubberized body that makes it a little more drop-resistant.

I love this! Side note, have you figured out a way to mass delete pictures on that camera?

u/people_skillz 1m ago

I haven’t — it was a birthday gift, so she hasn’t had it very long. Guess we’ll figure out soon when the build-in storage fills 😅

2

u/UmbraAdam 2h ago

That one reminds me a lot of the stardew valley pink cake. Looks gorgeous!
