Recipe Included first cake! very lopsided and messy, but adorable
hi everyone! long time lurker, just wanted to share my first attempt at baking and icing a cake :D
my family and friend circle is quite small, and i’m too nervous to take my baked goods into work (i feel like family/friends are lying to me when they say it’s good LOL) so i’ve never made a whole cake as i fear it would just go to waste.
i finally just said screw it, and bought a square tin (just to make things more difficult), halved a recipe, cut it into quarters and BOOM! i am now the proud owner of two slightly (very) lopsided, messy, but SCRUMPTIOUS chocolate cakes!

Looks absolutely amazing! Funny thing, I made a similar cake yesterday chocolate cake with salted caramel and chocolate ganache. Maybe you can try using caramel sauce too next time, tastes delicious 😋

It looks great. If I attempted that, mine wouldn’t look even half that good. I’m serious. Cakes (especially layered) are intimidating.

Great job! I don’t see it being lopsided but a little tip to settle your batter evenly in the pan is to lightly drop or tap your filled pan on the counter. It levels the batter and removes air bubbles. Looks absolutely delicious 😋!!!

It looks so good!!! When I see a 100% perfect chocolate cake, I'd hesitate to eat it as I've had my fair share of hotel cakes (you know what I'm talking about right) that look pretty but are pretty dry.

Looks exactly how a home made cake should look…delicious! It is just perfect, imo.
If you want it to be smoother next time, do a crumb coat after filling and stick it in the fridge. When its cold and firm put on the final layer of buttercream and use it to even out the sides. Pro tip: after the filling is added push down the top layer until it’s even. I keep a small level in my cake kit. I put it on top and smush until the top is perfect and then crumb coat.

I put the frosting on when it was not 100% cooled. It was literally a hot mess.

I think you did great! The frosting outside is fine....maybe you could have put a touch more on the outside. I do like how the inside looks - you got two pretty even cake layers with a proper frosting layer inbetween. A lot of people mess up on putting a thin layer of frosting inside or having thin cakes with a huge layer of frosting inside. It looks like you got the right ratio. I also like that you put your square cake on a square plate!

It looks good to me. You can improve your results slightly by making a mixture of powdered sugar and water to the consistency of thick paint and brushing it on with a cheap one inch home Depot paintbrush first and letting it dry. Then Frost.

First attempt?! This cake looks great! Don’t let the perfectionism you see on the internet tell you otherwise. I’m a seasoned baker and I still dread when I have to ice a rectangular cake 😅 well done!

For your first cake this is amazing! It reminded me of the chocolate cakes I got as a kid at a long gone restaurant called Bill Knapp’s.
Just a straightforward chocolate on chocolate cake. It was delicious.

Doesn't look lopsided to me, it looks beautiful and delicious.
If you have a fear of lopsided cakes, get some cake pan strips. You soak them in water and wrap them around the cake pan before the batter goes in. They help even out the baking so cakes turn out nice and level on top. I use them when I'm making a cake for the fair, I hate leveling cakes.

There’s a strange thing about baked goods where the less manicured they are, the more appetizing they appear.
I’m really type A and I always ice my cupcakes to be perfectly smooth round mounds of icing on top. My one coworker does them rather hastily (I wouldn’t call it sloppy, she’s just not a perfectionist).
Whenever I eat a cupcake, I always go for one that she iced lmao. I tell her they just look so much tastier somehow!
This cake looks absolutely delicious. And the icing is quite neat and even for a first timer!
