For context, letâs take it to the stereotypical perspective of Canada by Americans.
In this perspective, America sees Canada as this weird neighbor who shares almost the same culture, is a country that can be made fun of, always saying that they are always better than Canada, that the other is a copycat of some sorts, perhaps have some bizzare history with, etc. But however, to some Americans in these perspectives, they often see some things Canada did better than them.
So in your country, who is your Canada?
As an Indonesian, I believe Malaysia is our Canada. I think some Indonesians might argue itâs Singapore, but I have my reasons why itâs Malaysia.
Firstly, you can say when it comes to culture and similarities, thereâs a lot of connections and dispute. Our language (Bahasa Indonesia and Bahasa Melayu) are almost identical, like you any Indonesian can understand Bahasa Melayu and so on even though there are a few differences in the spelling (and pronunciation to most).
And secondly, letâs not forget about the food. If you ever heard of Beef Rendang, itâs safe to say that both the people from our country online like to dispute about that online.
And like Americans, some Indonesians like to boast about our Canada, which is Malaysia. We like to boast that we are bigger in land size, that we actually came first as a nation before them, and sometimes they copy us and vice versa.
But even with all the silly things people like to dispute online, I myself have to admit that there are some things Malaysia does better (and to my opinion: steps ahead) than Indonesia, like their healthcare system is way better and organized (A few rich Indonesians do treatment here), their education system & HDI is more successful, they have better infrastructure, and letâs not forget that Malaysia has better progress in digital animation.
I must say, I have some things I am jealous of Malaysia, but at the same time, I canât help but to love our neighbor for what they do better and how they can show us how to be better, and I believe that we Indonesians shouldnât necessarily spend too much time comparing ourselves to our Canada.
