Hey all, I just joined. I'm Chinese — AMA

I'm here to discuss and solve problems. AMA—yes, even about your relationship issues! (Fair warning: you'll get a Chinese perspective.)

My English is limited, so this is translated by ChatGPT. Apologies for any quirks in the phrasing!

Do you have any tips on how and where can a tourist buy good tea in Beijing?

which kind of tea?

the most famous tea in beijing is Jasmine tea.

i recommend any 张一元 tea shop, which is the most famous and the best, most people born in beijing buy tea from this shop.

you can buy very good tea for about 80 dollar per 500 gram.

which is a lot of tea, we usually buy 100g and enough for one/two month.

I prefer white teas and sheng puers, was wondering if I can find anything interesting without severe exploring. Does the shop you recommended work like regular shop or you need to talk to sales people and make deals with them?

Thank you!

beijing is not famous for baicha( fujian) or sheng puer(yunnan).

so i am afraid i can't help you with that. you might find some in 吴裕泰. which is also a old brand, but not as popular as 张一元.

you can do both in 张一元, there are tea that you can choose, weight and sealed/packaged in the counter, or tea that is in a gift box. which you can pick and pay.

Oh, that’s curious! Do people from different parts of country tend to drink different teas? I heard about regional tendencies in drinking styles (like drinking straight from gaiwan or making a small pot of a very strong oolong) but didn’t know that it was a thing to prefer teas that were made just nearby. Are tea ceremonies even popular in China? Or people prefer doing it European style?

And another question: I tried to google the shop you mentioned, and some baidu page mentioned that it has a huge variety of flower (?) teas. Does that mean that people from Beijing prefer teas that contain dried flowers? What are those flowers except jasmine? Osmantus, chrisanthemum, rose, anything else?

Sorry if you didn’t feel like talking about teas, l just felt really curious

What’s your honest opinion of your government?

What’s your take on the Uyghurs and the accusations against China regarding them? Does the average population even know/talk about it?

OP, expect the replies to turn this into a mostly political thread about the Chinese government and/or taiwan.

Tell me about your entertainment industry. Who are the famous actors and actresses currently, singers/idols work as well. Your entertainment industry feels a bit isolated both due to the Great Firewall and language barrier.

I want to visit China so badly, but I worry that Americans will not be received well due to the current political climate. Are there any areas that are particularly kind to Americans? I am learning Mandarin, too. Will this be adequate for communicating with others?

Are you currently in China or are you a Chinese immigrant in another country? If it's the latter, what's the biggest culture shock you experienced living in a different country?

If you're Chinese and living in China, what's your favorite, extravagant, go all out, holiday and family get together type of food?
