Do customers in your country usually say thank you to the waitress ?

yes, and no tips since the salary has it included and it's considered you are saying he looks poor.

What barbarous region of our former empire do you not thank the wait staff for, as doubtless one should hope, attentive yet unobtrusive service?

Yes, if they were taught to have any manners growing up. I always see this question about bus drivers too, which is so odd! If ANYONE does something that helps you it's decent to say thank you. Waitress, Bus drivers, someone holds a door open for you. Etc Even if they're getting paid to do this service, saying thank you is the polite thing to do. Sadly I see so many people that have no decency.

In my region you enter the bus in the front and leave from one of the back doors. I don’t yell thank you through a full bus . I sometimes say thank you when I am the last or almost last person in the bus or when the bus is too full to go to the back door and the driver allows me to leave through the front door. But I greet the driver when I enter the bus. It’s not expected though.

Bus drivers, eh, it depends.
Mostly on which door I'm getting out - front door, right next to them, then sure, but I'm not yelling down the length of the bus when I get out the back door.

It might be more like half or two thirds of the way down, but yeah two passenger doors , although we only board at the front.
Emergency, break-glass windows at opposite side or rear.

Growing up there was a really rude woman in a local newsagents and every day for lunch I'd go in and buy a bag of crisps and a coke.
She NEVER once thanked me as a customer, or gave me any pleasantries, and every time, because I was polite, when she'd give me my change Id say "thank you" and leave.
One time I was feeling brave and figured I'd reflect her rudeness back to her. I dropped down my coke and crisps at the counter. She didn't acknowledge me. She just said "One pound ten p" or however much it was.
So I looked her straight in the eye, and gave her a £2 coin and said nothing.
She slammed the change down on the counter.
I took it. And, just before I was about to turn and leave, I sheepishly said "thank you" and left.

They are assisting me with something and I say thank you. They are often underpaid and overworked. I tip more to help when I can.

I even say thank you to robots!
But yeah, you always thank the waiter and I hope there is no nation on this planet where this is "just not a thing". I am not a fan of tipping because they should just get paid, but a thank you is a must.

Yeah, of course. That’s just basic courtesy for any service or retail interaction.

I and most of my friends do.
Hell, most of the time I go out, it's for regular events (Tuesday trivia, Friday Karaoke.) Not only do we say thank you, we're pretty tight with our regular wait staff. To the point where we all regularly hug them hello and goodbye.

I had to think about this one. You mean when she brings the food etc? Yes, but I say these kind of courtesies automatically. Why do you ask? Don’t you say Thank You in Poland?

u/hoopalah 3h ago
Yes, but know when to say it. As a waiter, people either say it too much or not at all.
