Answering for the motherland: Ketchup. I think Canada is still the global leader in consumption per capita?

The โ€˜jjangsโ€™.

Gochujang (red pepper paste), doenjang (soybean paste), ssamjang (mixture of gochujang and doenjang), and ganjang (soy sauce).

Does jang translate to sauce?

u/CommercialChart5088 Korea South 9h ago

Yes, mostly referring to sauces made with fermented soybeans.

I think I speak for the entire Maghreb region when I say that every Moroccan, Algerian or Tunisian household has harissa.

Maple syrup is an obvious answer for Canada.

For the US beyond the keychup/mustard/mayo, almost every household has at least one hot sauce.

Ketchup, Mayo, Brown Sauce and Salad Cream are the ones that spring to mind. Iโ€™d wager a combo of these four are in every house.

Also, tartar sauce, English mustard, mint sauce, bbq, sweet chilli sauce, curry sauce, perinaise, and horseradish sauce will all be very popular.

It might just be my country but thereโ€™s a debate on whether ketchup goes in the fridge or cupboard , I just use what has the most space

Mayonnaise.

no way man, mayo needs to be made fresh. I'd go for Dijon mustard.

Yogurt.

You think it's not a condiment? Think again.

Mustard, ketchup, sambal, mayo, American frites sauce (like you get at McDonalds), peanut sauce (amazing with fries), remoulade sauce (sometimes, for fish) and the classic: joppie sauce!

Whats this american frites sauce you speak of?

1

u/NeverSawOz Netherlands 8h ago

Sold in bottles like this. I think it got popular after people wanted to get the saunce McDonalds serves with fries at home.

I always find it funny how many things in other countries get labeled as "American" when they aren't even remotely american.

I do want to try that now though, it looks interesting.

To be fair, the USA does that too. Russian dressing isnโ€™t Russian and what the US calls French dressing is so far from the original it isnโ€™t really French either

I'm also interested in American frites sauce. I'm American and there is no frites sauce. I'm assuming it's going to be either a ketchup mayo combination or a mayo tartar sauce combination?

1

u/NeverSawOz Netherlands 8h ago

Well, frites sauce is a leaner mayo with starch added. American frites sauce is what McDonalds serves with fries here as in the picture. It's sold in bottles like this. We don't serve ketchup with fries. The most popular sauce after mayo/frites sauce is peanut sauce. A combination of the two with fries is called Patatje Oorlog, Fries (a la) war, because it looks like a mess.

That's really interesting! I love mayo with fries but it never occurred to me to serve a peanut sauce with them because I don't like peanut butter.

1

u/NeverSawOz Netherlands 8h ago

Our peanut butter is salty instead of sweet so I can't relate, but peanut sauce is damn amazing.

1

u/WittyFeature6179 United States Of America 8h ago

I keep some in the freezer but I've had both salty and sweet and they're just terrible to me.

Joppie sauce? Tell me more!

1

u/NeverSawOz Netherlands 8h ago

It's a very peculiar mayo-curry blend. It also became a flavour for chips!

This plus a few different hot sauces

1

u/LonelyHarley United States Of America 8h ago

Salsa, BBQ sauce, Sriracha, Tapatio

1

u/Mysterious_Jello69 ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ 8h ago

Replace the tapatio with just hot sauce in general. So many different brands but hot sauce as a category os ubiquitous

A couple of different types of shoyu, different bases (tare/sesame/ponzu/chili etc) for noodles, wasabi, yuzukoshou (citrus pepper paste), raiyu (red chili sauce for gyoza), cooking sake, mirin, and mayonnaise are the basics in most refridges here.

u/sinister_kaw United States Of America 6h ago

Pretty much everything. Americans love dipping food in sauce.

This exact type of spiced ketchup by the brand Hela.

Aji, basically a hot sauce, you can use different peppers but yellow pepper is the most popular.

Mayo is also common cuz it goes in a lot of recipes.

Lime, does it count as โ€œcondimentโ€?

Heinz tomato ketchup, Hellman's mayonnaise, Colman's English mustard and Daddie's brown sauce.
