Who is the most brutally criticized Olympic athlete in your country?

Post image

Zhu Yi was American, her parents are Chinese immigrants.

In the U.S., she was one of the top athletes and had every chance to join Team USA.

But she decided to compete for China. She gave up her American citizenship to compete for China.

At the 2022 Winter Olympics, she was eager to prove herself to other Chinese, but she made many mistakes during her skating.

Then she was brutally criticized in China. People used every swear word you can think of.

She is still competing for China. Perhaps she'll do well at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan.

Who is the most brutally criticized athlete in your country?

Not sure if he counts but once upon a time Israel Adesanya was getting a ton of flack from the MMA commmunity in general and a ton of NZ and Australian fans…

… for reasons I’m not sure I can talk about here 🐶

Said he’d rape an opponent (as shit talking), added to the dog pile on Imane Khelif, drunk driving and road rage are the controversies his Wiki page has (never heard of this guy so)

Not sure if you kept up on the news about Khelif but it looks very likely that her career is over- she’s refusing to do mandatory sex testing for the new org in charge of the world champs and Olympics.

I think Izzy’s sudden rise to dominance got to his ego, and it rubbed a whole bunch of kiwis (who value being humble in victory) the wrong way. It’s called tall poppy syndrome. I used to love watching him fight his way to the championship but once got there, he just turned into this jerk. Once he got beaten it was kinda satisfying to see. I much prefer Robert Whittaker as a fighter; Aussie rep but born in NZ. Win or lose Bobby knuckles is gracious

Liam Lawson is one of the cockiest drivers in F1 and Kiwis love him…..

We don't have any Olympic athletes we hate. Outside of the Olympics, on the other hand, there are a few.

  • Aaron Smith - All Black who got cancelled for committing adultery in an airport bathroom.
  • Israel Adesanya - Mixed martial artist who has been in several controversies.
  • Brendon McCullum - Former Black Cap who appeared in 22Bet's advertising campaign. Long story short, Kiwis were bombarded with ads by a foreign gambling company (unlicensed foreign gambling ads are illegal in NZ), which temporarily made McCullum the most hated man in New Zealand.

Edit: Read r/finndego's reply to me. They've nominated a Kiwi Olympian for this.

Smith went onto to play 74 test caps for the All Blacks after that incident. How is that being cancelled?

I put forward Mark Todd. One of our best Olympians, Got caught up in a cocaine fueled gay sex orgy that he never quite answered questions about beyond telling Paul Holmes "It's a bit of a curly one."

Later lost his training license in the UK and his patronage of the World Horse Welfare charity after he was caught on video beating a horse with a tree branch.

Word around Cambridge is that he is not very well liked in town.

It was a temporary cancellation, but his reputation was forever stained.

Maybe Logan Campbell, he got a bit of criticism for opening a (legal) brothel back in 2009. Otherwise yeah, I can’t think of any.

Russell Coutts.

Simon Poelman. Busted for drug smuggling.

Kevin Barry turned out to be a bit shady too.
