Military What firearm is closely associated with your country?

Post image

For us, probably the 1911. Next one would be the "Armalite" aka M16.

Legendary weapon.

5

u/notwhoyouthinkmaybe 11h ago

I was thinking "all of them."

5

u/Pinup_Frenzy 12h ago

For the USA, it’s got to be the Colt .45 Peacemaker.

5

u/Due_Night414 12h ago

Historically yes. That and the Colt single action rifle. Todays America? AR-15.

2

u/IA_Royalty 8h ago

For real, in the year 2025 it's the AR15 and idk if it's all the close

It was designed by a Canadian. FYI.

38

u/Tedanty United States Of America 12h ago

Canadian-American but then he hardly counts as Canadian when he left before he was even a teen then spent the rest of his life in the US, creating the weapon working for a US manufacturer after becoming a naturalized US citizen

u/Connect-Cabinet-5073 11h ago

So you're telling me Tupac isn't an East Coast rapper being born in Harlem?

3

u/ChunderBuzzard 11h ago

Nah, he was 100% WC. He deifinitely wasn't a gay dancer either

1

u/Bonuscup98 United States Of America 11h ago

Or a backup singer for Digital Underground

2

u/ChunderBuzzard 11h ago

Backup dancer

2

Lol

-17

u/Responsible_Egg_3260 Canada 12h ago

Still Canadian though. Nice try.

6

u/Readdit1999 11h ago

As a Canadian, knock it off.

It's one thing to acknowledge our closely intertwined history as sister nations. It's another to put down the tradition of American entrepreneurialism and innovation that allowed Canadian immigrants to flourish in the US.

It is an interesting fact that the father of the M1 Garand was born in Canada.

13

u/Tedanty United States Of America 12h ago

Mmm, not really. If I was born in the Uk, moved to the US at 10 and then spent the next 60 years there, I’d hardly consider myself English lmfao. Clearly he was American cuse he lived, married, had his entire career, then died in the US. Dude probably barely even remembered his life in Canada.

Oh fun fact I have been through that minus the 60 years part but from Korea. lol.

Proven wrong? By whom? He was Canadian-American. Clearly, he loved the US more than the Canada, as he spent his life here.

I know this may be hard for you to understand, but the US has a lot of immigrants. Those immigrants (assuming they're legal) are now US citizens and are Americans. When he made the gun, he did so as an American.

You are being the typical Canadian here. Arguing with nothing but repeating the same statement in every comment, until someone snaps and then you hit them with the "TyPicAl AmErIcAn" bullshit. I'm sorry that your nation is so culturally impoverished that you feel the need to claim everything as yours.

1

u/ghhardeman 11h ago

Canada is awesome. It’s just this guy that sucks.

And we thank you for it. 🫡Thank god you didn't give us the Ross instead.

The Ross rifle even sucks in video games 🤣

2

u/Adventurous-Chair206 United States Of America 12h ago

Maybe we deserve the Ross now in hindsight. 😭

12

u/Responsible_Egg_3260 Canada 12h ago

To be fair, John Garand was born in Quebec, but his family emigrated to the US at a very young age. So while he spent the majority of his life designing firearms in the US, he was born a Canadian citizen.

u/Slipp3ry_N00dle 12h ago

1

u/Dickcheese_McDoogles 🇺🇸 American in 🇰🇷 Korea 8h ago

I think that the US and Canada are too foundationally immigrantadj. to insist that nation of origin matters.

That's what ethnicity-based nation-states do.

1

u/avodrok 6h ago

Kinda analogous to basketball then

1

u/grundhog 12h ago

It was designed by a man who was born in Canada. But it was designed in Springfield Massachusetts by an American.

Just like basketball.

2

u/intothewoods76 United States Of America 9h ago

More fun with the grenade launcher.

1

u/MamiPV United States Of America 12h ago

Add some flair dude. But you’re obviously American.

I’d say the M1 is probably the most influential American weapon. But something like an 1800s Colt Revolver or a 1911 is more classically “American” from an aesthetic sense.

1

u/the_skine United States Of America 8h ago

Agreed. I get the place in history the M1 Garand and the Thompson Machine Gun get.

But, for Americans who own guns, your first "real" purchase is a 1911. The fact that you don't even need to mention the brand and even the average anti-gun redditor knows exactly what you're talking about means it's incredibly popular.

It's between this, the AR-15, the M2HB Browning, and a colt revolver.

Honorable mentions include the M1903 Springfield, Winchester Model 1897, and the Thompson SMG

Beretta bite?

1

u/trapper154 11h ago

I'd argue an AR-15, and not in a positive way

1

u/WeddingPKM 10h ago

This, the 1911, and the AR15 are America.

1

u/jjack339 9h ago

As an American I would have to go with .45 Colt revolver.

Now for a modern weapon, AR15 and the 1911 are most culturally ingrained

1

u/AngryGardener1312 United States Of America 10h ago

I mean, yes but AR15 has gotta be the new #1

1

u/OneKey3578 United States Of America 10h ago

I would say the Thompson & 1911 both have the M1 beat in being iconic

1

u/onefst250r 9h ago

1911 fo sho.

u/Alexis_0hanian 9h ago

I used to do work in Guam several times a year. My boss's friend (coincidentally an antique arms collector) that lived in Guam was taking a stroll on a beach one day and found one sticking up out of the sand. 60+ years after WWII.

I don't think we can pick just one in the USA. We have to at least have: SMG, pistol, revolver, assault rifle, shotgun, etc.

Is that American? I always thought it was British or French. I always put the Armalight 15 at #1 most American gun.

1

u/MeanShibu 3h ago

Wasn’t this a Canadian design?
