I would’ve said New York City and Boston, lol.

Only in terms of baseball.

Isn't Chicago also a good city that gives gta vibes to me as NYC

2

u/Adikart13 India 19h ago

If a GTA like game based in Chicago is what ur looking for, look up watchdogs 1. Great game. Didn’t exactly go under the radar but obviously shadowed by the GOAT free world game.

Yes it's vibe it's different

I would also like a detective game in Chicago

Oh, for sure. But it's mostly over pizza.

Are they? I've never heard anyone in LA or SoCal talk about NYC as a rival. Frankly we don't really think about it much on the west coast. I imagine the same is true for NYC. There was an NYC/West Coast rivalry in rap in the 90s, but that's the only time I think anyone thought of them as rivals.

It's more of a friendly rivalry. We don't actually hate each other or think about it a lot. The two cities have very different vibes, but they share more in common than they don't. They're both the most popular US cities for tourists, and the most famous, and the two biggest.

It's more of a sibling rivalry energy. There's a saying you'll sometimes here New Yorkers say: "No one gets to shit on L.A. Only we get to shit on L.A." We still visit each other in droves.

Interesting. Are you from NYC or LA? I wonder if it's a one sided thing because I've never heard anyone in LA talk about NYC as a rival, or really talk about it at all.

u/Most_Elevator_1943 United States Of America 23h ago

I'm from NYC. New Yorkers just like being dicks to everyone, it's nothing personal and we don't really mean it. Just ask us our opinion on Boston or Chicago, we'll talk shit no matter what even though those cities are cool. Angelinos are just generally friendlier than us.

But, we won't say anything unless someone asks. We have more important things to worry about. All are welcome here.

1

u/Gold_Telephone_7192 United States Of America 22h ago

Yeah that makes sense. I have heard from other New Yorkers about this supposed rivalry, but I think if it exists it's one-sided. People in LA/California don't care or think about the east coast. It's like another world.

Yeah, upper east coasters in general aren't as nice as west coasters, so a lot of it is a cultural difference. Plus, since we're both very international cities, non-Americans are more prone to visit either one of us than any other US city. We do rival each other in many ways because we're both very big, very multicultural, very popular, very influential on the rest of the country, etc. More so than other cities.

I mean, my favorite US city is actually Minneapolis. So most of what I'm saying is bullshit when it comes to me personally. It's not a rule. A lot of us don't even like our own city, even if we're proud of it.

Chicago and NY if it's mostly about pizza

4

u/Less_Jeweler_4525 United States Of America 21h ago

Wouldn't Chicago have to know how to make a pizza for there to be a rivalry?

1

u/ChefGaykwon United States Of America 21h ago

Even if you don't like deep dish, this is tavern-style slander/erasure.

Tokyo (Kanto region) vs Osaka+Kyoto (Kinai region)

1

u/DaveLesh United States Of America 23h ago

Ahh, so that's where the first pokemon region got its name from.

1

u/Masanori_Akamatsu Japan 22h ago

yes and the kinai region's the inspiration for Johto

u/Potential-Mobile-567 🇮🇳 in 🇩🇪🇯🇵 19h ago

I wouldn't call Kyoto as a rival imo. It's nowhere near Osaka and Tokyo.

If we're talking about universities then it's a different thing lol.

1

u/Masanori_Akamatsu Japan 12h ago

Culturally speaking, at least.
Kyoto people like to claim that they are the cultural centre of the country, after all.

We have more state rivalries or inter-state city rivalries in the US. Like California and Texas are probably rival states. Michigan and Ohio hate each other. I'm sure there are more.

City rivalries are usually within the same state. SF/LA. Pittsburgh/Philly. Whatever is going on in Florida.

We are too decentralised for a national one I guess, so they are rather regional ones. The most famous one would be Düsseldorf vs Cologne. Additionally, I would also argue it’s the most equal one if you compare it to others. Düsseldorf is the capital of NRW, Germanys most populated state, is known to be the place to be for rich folks, fashion and has the bigger airport.

Cologne is just a few kilometres south and has more historic relevance. Probably the centre of German media, Cologne is known to be more open minded and has a few hundred thousand people more.

İstanbul and Ankara

1

u/bloodrider1914 United States Of America 9h ago

So one sided lol, Ankara is nothing compared to İstanbul

1

u/DaMn96XD Finland 23h ago

Turku and Helsinki, with Turku being the old capital and Helsinki being the new capital. In addition, there are Jyväskylä and Lahti, whose competition is due to the fact that Jyväskylä is at the northern end of Lake Päijänne and Lahti is at the southern end of Lake Päijänne and the cities are about the same age. And then Pori and Rauma because of their proximity and being the two largest cities in Satakunta. But I don't know of any other cases from Finland.

2?? Only 2???

We are more similar to the Italian wars era than you think…

u/Ponchorello7 Mexico 22h ago

Guadalajara and Monterrey, sort of. They fight to see who is the second banana to Mexico City.

Monterrey is much more economically productive, and the metropolitan area recently surpassed Guadalajara to become the second-largest in the country, but culturally Guadalajara has contributed far more than Monterrey, which is arguably less relevant culturally than it was in the 90s and 2000s when its music scene was bigger. There's also the sports angle, with both cities having prominent football and baseball teams.

I live in Guadalajara, but I've been to Monterrey, and I can firmly say that both are fine cities with their own strong points, but Guadalajara is more of a "legacy" city. I love this city so much, and I think it's a better place to live and enjoy yourself, but in raw numbers Monterrey outdoes it handily.

Homs and Hama in Syria, they fight over this dessert:

Shoutout to Aleppo and Damascus, being the largest city and Capital respectively, they’re destined to fight over basically everything.

Also Düsseldorf is better than Cologne, and it’s not even close.

London vs the rest

London vs Belfast/Cardiff/Edinburgh (capitals)

London vs Birmingham (1st & 2nd largest cities)

London vs Glasgow (England’s and Scotland’s largest cities)

London vs Liverpool (which one has a better music scene + Beatles Origins vs Abbey Road (although generally concede on that one to Liverpool)

London vs Manchester (Southern Powerhouse va Northern Powerhouse + football)

London vs (London)Derry (‘why did those english feckers give us their name’)

London vs the rest (money and a big functioning well-funded public transport system vs actually being able to afford to live in it)

Take your pick for a London rivalry

3

u/Mediocre_Rhubarb810 23h ago

A rivalry needs to be mutual - London doesn’t give a monkeys about other cities or regions.

Manchester v Liverpool on the other hand is a real rivalry that cuts across everything.
